Cool thread!

I have the following hanging in my garage

58cm 2008 Atlantis
55cm 1989 Bridgestone MB-1 ( for sale)
52cm 1993 Bridgestone MB-2
56cm 2012 Soma Double Cross DC
52cm 1992 Trek 970
52cm 1984 Fillet Brazed Fisher Mt.Tam
46cm 1990 Bridgestone MB-1 currently stripped (F/F for sale)
55cm 1992 GT Outpost in pieces

I have way too much overlap with the 90's MTB's and need to thin the herd..
Plus I need a new down sleeping bag for the Michigan Country Bike Rally so
it's a good reason to get rid of the bikes I don't ride much.

and live in a great city to ride bikes in. I don't drive much either-like
under 2k miles a year so that makes me feel even less guilty. But i'll
start in order of importance.-well at least my order.

51 sage green Sam. Best bike ever. Get's used every day.
54 orange quickbeam. Super duper fun.
Cannondale Adventure 2 step through hybrid. Permanent baby seat gets used
 a lot.
Electra Townie 7d. My wife's ride which is super fun.
1969 Schwinn Twinn-which my oldest daughter (8) thinks is the coolest bike
ever. Mostly because she doesn't have to pedal. And it has baskets for all
 her dolls.
Jamis Capri 24 that's my oldest daughters ride. Fine little bike. First
one she got to pick out all by herself. I asked her why she likes it
best-she said it makes me feel like I'm a teenager-I'm in trouble.
Surly LHT which usually sees super nasty weather duty. I'm not sure if
I'll hang on to that one but it's a good bike so I probably will.

Needless to say we have never had a car in our garage. My wife stopped
complaining a while ago. So I guess it's ok.

 I hope others play along.

Rear loaded, with a little bit up front (sleeping bag). Pannier on one
side only but not a ton of weight in there. Heaviest thing was
probably the tent, packed up high.
So what am I packing wrong? I don't want to get a whole new luggage

 you can see here:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/17795666300/in/photostream/lightbox/

Suggestions? Want to get it so I'm stable and can ride hands free, at
least at lower 10mph speeds. Possible, or just the wrong bike for it?
Intermediate Riv tubing, OS downtube, nothing super light, nor super
stout, basically like a Hilsen I would guess.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Photos

2015-03-10 Thread Jeffrey Marco
Last night I swapped out my standard B17 for a B67 on my Bombadil, and I
can tell you there is a noticeable difference. I'm pushing 2 bills and the
spring compression on the B67 is a lot more noticeable compared to my aged
champion flyer (sprung B17) . I think that the extra width of the B67 plays
a part in this.

On Monday, March 9, 2015 at 3:38:02 PM UTC-4, Surlyprof wrote:

I was always curious about the b67 as well for a hardtail MTB. I thought I
had seen (heard?) somewhere that the springs are so tight that it doesn't

the contrary? It seems to me that even if the springs were crazy stiff,
any vibration would have to dampen through the coils. Also, like a runner
who hits the ground with 4-5 times their weight in impact pressure, when a
175# cyclist hits a bump, wouldn't that translate into a greater than 175#
 pressure?

 Curious.

noticeable cushion, both from the width and the springs. others could
probably give you a more historically based comparison

[RBW] Re: Clearcoat over raw steel, my turn!

2015-02-18 Thread Jeffrey Marco
That looks so good! I've got a couple frames I wouldn't mind doing that
to,but I'm always afraid of killing the resale value... Maybe I should just
get over it.

On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 12:00:10 AM UTC-5, Tim Gavin wrote:

This is my '88 Schwinn KOM, after I had the frame refinished.

The paint was badly scratched, chipped, and showing a couple surface rust
 spots.
 1) I had it bead blasted to remove the paint.
 2) My friend Andy brazed on some eyelets (the KOM, as a racing frame, had
 none).
 3) I had it bead blasted again to clean up after the brazing.
 4) I had it painted with 2 coats of automotive clear. My local powder
coater was afraid his clear coat would still be a bit milky, so he hooked
me up with a painter instead.

I think it turned out beautifully raw. I love being able to see the bra
zing. The lugs are simple and very clean, but the fork lug is pretty
messy in comparison. Then again, it's a weird lug and looks like it
 needed a some fillet work.

The curious part is, there is some sort of copper or bronze on the bottom
of the head tube. It lasted through two bead blasts, so it's not rust. I
think it's a gorgeous detail, but it's weird.

I retired the original Uniglide wheels, and gave my Schwinn the wheels off
my '05 Cannondale (for now). I'm really tempted to get a dynamo wheelset,
and this one is very tempting
 http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-custom-made-wheelset-26-with-dynamo-dh-t780-mavic-xm317-52011/wg_id-507

 for less than $200.

I had broken the original XT derailer a couple months ago, so I found a
9-speed XT RD and installed matching 9-speed Shimano bar-end shifters. The
bar wrap was matched to the Captain America original paint, but the blue
still looks good. I may try dark red or green next.

I can gush about the Schwinn KOM
 http://mombat.org/MOMBAT/Bikes/1988_Schwinn_KOM.html (and it's older
brother, the Paramountain). If you ever see one that fits you (and your
N+1 equation), buy it. Ned Overend rode the Paramountain to a NORBA
championship, and gave design input. It has great 71/74 geometry and is
 comparable to an MB-1. Mine is 22 x 24 (56 x 61 cm) of MUSA, lugged,
 lightweight steel!
I lucked out and found this one on my hometown's Craigslist for $75. I've
been very lucky with my local Craigslist! I scored this, my Riv, my
Giordana gofast, and a 90s Univega for my girlfriend that I built up like
 I've built this KOM.

Everything is original except: wheels, tires, Nitto B135 bars, TRP brake
levers, Nitto Dirt Drop 8 stem, 9 speed shifters and RD, pedals and seat.
I use a Nitto M12 and Carradice SQR to carry a Sackville Small Trunksack
and Carradice Nelson, respectively. Bell and mirror, of course.

Now that I have rack mounts, I will probably try out some camping setups
 this summer.

I love love love how this bike rides; it's a tight race between the KOM
and my Rivendell for the most ride time (in fair weather). The fast 2
tires (ITS MK2) make it great for the potholed streets and curbs on my
commute, and it really flies on the limestone gravel back roads in Iowa's
 river valleys. Grant Wood country.

Good thing about doing a hard ride before, you know what to expect and you

Had a good plan coming in but that went to hell when the allure of getting
to Subway first and the helpful but fast pull I got from Jon B, who's

But again the beautiful camaraderie of Randonneuring helped offset the bad

Maybe it's the common fact that everyone that rides a bike for the simple
fact of beautiful views and lovely roads are good people.

I got pulled by a lot of people on this ride. For that I am grateful for
 the aerodynamics of peoples butts.
Didn't really recover from the early afternoon bad decisions until near
the end of the day, despite my best efforts Jenny Oh still beat me at the
 sprint finish.
Still solid ride. Folks were nice enough to pull me along.

The recovery ride the next day was short and sweet. Recent rains made the
trails nice and the weather was perfect. Even Joe Bunik came out and
messed around. We hung out and still had a blast, only one minor yoga
 demonstration.

Pretty lucky to surround myself with good buddies who are always willing

Short or long. Dirt or Road. Whatever keeps you rolling and smiling. For

I have 2 - 27oz KK Reflect ( brushed finish) and two knock off iris cages.

Here are some of the my observations...
Even though I washed them thoroughly I still get that funky SS smell/ taste.
They rattle like crazy. The loop and bottle in the cage. I'm going to have
to try some of the the ideas mentioned in the other responses. I wrapped my
loop in hemp twine and that has helped some what.
The dirt and grim from the gravel roads has destroyed the finish although,
I'm sure I can clean it up with some Bar Keepers friend.
Get insulated because the single wall freezes in no time and I know you
ride in some cold temps.

Hope this helps.

Without the lip in plastic bottles it seems like stainless would bounce out
