Re: [RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group: What is the best vehicle for hauling your bike?

2012-03-20 Thread Larry Schellhase
I have a 99 VW Eurovan Camper which does a great job of hauling two bikes
and two people.
Lots of bikers I know have Honda Elements. Two or three bikes easily fit in
the rear with two passengers up front. Too bad they stopped making it.

[RBW] Brooks Saddle Squeaks

2012-02-23 Thread Larry Schellhase
My Brooks Champion Special squeaks when I ride it. I had it off my bike for
a couple of years but I missed the looks and feel so I remounted it a
couple of weeks ago and for a while it was quiet but now the noise is back.
I hate noisey bikes. It is impossible for me to tell where the saddle is
squeaking. Any ideas on how to quiet the beast?

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: 64 Atlantis still FS

2012-02-16 Thread Larry Schellhase
Where are you measuring? I do not claim to know the correct way to measure
a tt but on my 68cm Atlantis the distance between the head tube and the
seat post is 59cm. The Rivendell geometry chart from the era my was made
says the top tube on a 68 was 62 and the tt on a 64 was 60 so I must be
measuring incorrectly. The brochure with the chart is undated but at the
time the list price was "about $1300." I purchased my bike from Peter White
in November 2003 and the frame fork and headset cost $990.

Re: [RBW] Los Angeles Bike shops

2012-02-06 Thread Larry Schellhase
Bicycle John in Burbank built both my Rambouillet (2X) and my wife's
Rivendell once. The staff there always seem to appreciate both bikes but I
don't think they offer any lugged steel frames or Riv-like components for
sale. I have also have had positive experience and reception at PV Bike in
Palos Verdes, the owner here is a friend of ours. He has a Columbine and I
believe he still sells Waterford but it is a Specialized concept store. And
lastly Helen's in Marina Del Rey has a mechanic that truly drools over our
bikes. Helen's is the closest to our home so I have been going here lately.

You should also check out Open Road Bicycles in Pasadena, the store has
lots of old and new stuff but the store completely lacks organization, I'm
being generous here. To look at tires and tubes you literally have to crawl
into a tire and tube cave. If you don't find what you are looking for ask,
he could have anything here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group

2011-01-08 Thread Larry Schellhase
My wife is 6' and has a pbh of 90.5, I am 6'5" and my pbh is 97.5. Early in
2003 we both ordered Rivendell's. When Grant sent to design sheets to us he
included a note to me saying the bike he had designed for me was nearly
identical to a 68cm Rambouillet and if I wanted to switch my order my
deposit would be applied to the price of the Rambouillet. I now have the
Rambouillet (repainted by JB) a 68cm Atlantis and a Bike Friday made from
the Rambouillet dimensions. My wife has the Douglas Brooks blue Riv a Bike
Friday and a Bruce Gordon BLT.

I am truly grateful to Grant and Rivendell for including tall frames in
their off the shelf inventory. It is truly rare to be able to buy a frame of
this size without getting it custom made. I believe the tall frames happened
at Rivendell because Bhima, the frame manager in the early part of this
century was very tall and Grant thought they should build frames that his
frame manager could ride.
