[RBW] Re: I have questions

2024-03-20 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Hey, Leah,
I don’t think you’ll have to worry about keeping up or pace for that
particular 2-day ride. It’s flat (no real hills) and mostly a laid-back
ride at your own pace. That said, some folks will be riding quicker than
others and you will find folks to ride with at any pace. Will you have
Michigan club rides starting up before June to try out the 48s with a
faster pace group?

On the basket rack safety issue, you could possibly do a more permanent
belt and suspenders approach with an extra set of 2 daruma bolts and 2
extra stays attached to the mid-fork braze ons, which would replace the
backup safety feature of the strap. That way you’d have attachment points
at fork crown, mid fork eyelets and drop out eyelets.

As to maybe the other question of are belts and suspenders really
necessary?: it’s hard to answer for other people. Making sure bolts are
tight and inspecting fork crown attachment for damage before big rides or
on a maintenance schedule could help relieve some of those anxieties. I get
rivs cautions about being thrown by jammed fenders or failing rack
attachments: you’d never choose to have these things happen to you, so why
not add some extra fail-safes.
Best,
Leif in Chicago

That's great, Leah!
I'm planning to camp. My wife will be riding for the first time and
camping, too.
I had a blast last year and fell in with a group that quickly became

Hey Leah, and midwestern riders,

There’s a well-planned and well-executed ride from Chicago’s Millenium Park
to New Buffalo, MI, spread out over 2 days, totalling about 100 miles all
told. June 14-15 (Friday and Saturday). Hundreds of friendly riders—most
camp the first night at Indiana Dunes state park, but hotels are another
option. Easy pace. Easy route. Food and sag support.
There are a number of Ragbrai riders who attend this ride from chicago.
Perhaps they could give you a taste of ragbrai without all the logistical
headaches.
I had a lot of fun last year on this ride and made plenty of new friends.
Registration opens Sunday, February 11. There are busses and moving trucks
to take you, your luggage, and your bike back to chicago should you like.

That Trek/Crust conversion sounds awesome. Please post some pictures if
you're able. Also, does the Spark fork offer clearance for 650b x 48mm, no
fender? I believe the listing says something like perfect for 38-42mm
tires.

[RBW] Was Riv brakes, Now help for the ham-fisted

2020-02-28 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Bill, thanks for bringing up the tendency among home mechanics to over-tighten
fittings on bikes. I suspect I fall into this group at times, and I’m wondering
if you or other experienced mechanics might offer some other examples like this
one of the grub screw that are frequently found to be too tight on bikes set up
by the autodidact set.

I realize that hand feel, as well as material strength and design, are tough to
describe textually or comprehensively, but if you have any other tips I’d
appreciate it.

I appreciated learning, for instance, the trick of tightening quick release
levers on wheels so that they make a slight indent on your palm when closing.
One can also check that the quick release isn’t so tight that it stops the hub
from oscillating back and forth after spinning away it’s momentum in the stand.

What about quill stem bolts? I’ve read it’s preferable that brake levers are
not so tight that they can’t rotate and break if the bike crashes or falls
over. Is the same true with stem bolts? Not so tight that the wedge damages the
steerer tube, but just tight enough that handlebar doesn’t rotate in clamp or
stem within steerer tube? Certain vintage seat post bolts can break if over
tightened. That’s an object lesson you hope you only have to learn once.

Any other examples that spring to mind?

Thanks,
Leif in Chicago

P.S. In a previous thread about a Tektro straddle cable that features two grub
screws, Bill Lindsay wrote: “Given most home mechanics' tendency to radically
overtighten everything, I worry about people damaging their straddle cable by
overtightening these unnecessary grub screws.”

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Rebuild Ideas

2017-06-19 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Thanks, Garth, this is helpful. I have the same levers as you, the RX 4.1
for road diameter bar ends. Your response confirms that all of the brake
calipers I tried these with levers were likely a poor fit and that the
fault of the misfit likely resides with the caliper and not the lever, or
with my setup of the calipers, perhaps. I used the tiny Diacompe cantilever
(model number escapes me, but 80s production, and inferior to the design of
all the cantilevers you mentioned, i.e., not the good 986 diacompe or the
NGC cantilevers), universal side pulls (I've now read that these calipers
required a good deal of lever pull even by vintage standards), and dura ace
center pulls with these levers and had mediocre results. I do like how
little real estate they occupy, however, and didn't really want to give up
on them for future builds.
Best,
Leif

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Rebuild Ideas

2017-06-19 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Garth, I like what you're saying about bar end brake levers, but are there good
levers to buy?
I've tried the tektro 3.2x or whatever they're called, but I ran out of lever
pull with cantis, side pulls, and centerpulls. NB, these were all vintage
calipers, so perhaps these Tektro bar end brake levers are designed for modern
dual pivot side pulls.
I'd like to hear more about specific lever and brake caliper pairings and
performance if possible. I'd love for BEBL to be a real build option in the
future but I've largely written off the tektro levers for underwhelming
performance.

[RBW] FT: TRP EuroX cantilever brakes for Albatross bar

2017-02-10 Thread Leif Eckstrom

Hi Folks,

I picked these up recently at a bike swap, and neglected to notice that a
straddle cable carrier and barrel adjusting hardware for one brake was
missing. This is easily rectifiable, but will cost you some extra money.
The needed parts are available on Amazon for about $25-32 shipped, or you
might have some of it already, like the ubiquitous tektro yoke or another
brand/style that will work instead.

Since I don't have an immediate use for these brakes, I'm hoping someone
would like to trade for an aluminum albatross bar or ahearne + map bar. I'd
really like to try the Albatross bar, and I want to use MTN Levers on a
commuter build. I'd also consider the Jitensha bar or maybe a VO bar,
porteur or postino in 22.2 (mtn. bar diameter).

About the brakes: New Take Offs. No marks that I can see; still have
factory grease and loctite on the hardware. *Caveat*: One brake needs
additional parts (see above).

Gun Metal Grey. Be like Mark, who has these on his Custom Cross with Spooky
hardware: Rt4FrPuQRJuYg2M2lpwO

(or: https://www.rivbike.com/pages/marks-staff-bikes)

Photo link for brakes I'm
trading: https://www.flickr.com/photos/9015075@N02/albums/72157678371422671

Thanks. Private message if possible (leifeckstrom "at" gmail "dot" com).
I'm in Chicago (Andersonville, north side) if you'd like to meet up.
Best,
Leif

[RBW] Re: FS: TA Specialites, PAUL, Merino Jersey, Nitto, VO, Tektro, Jagwire

2016-10-26 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Quick update:

Sold/sold pending funds: PAUL levers, VO decaleur, the Jagwire tandem
cables and the Jagwire Road Pro Complete Set. These items will be priority
shipped tomorrow, Thursday.

What remains:
Prices do not include shipping, but they have been lowered slightly, and I
will ship at cheapest cost. Figure Max $10 CONUS for Priority Mail from
Chicago. Combined shipping and local pickup heartily approved.

1. Giro New Road Merino (89% merino, 11% nylon) Crew Neck T-Shirt – retro
jersey vibe, but not too PRO-school.

Grey heather with oatmeal colored panel. Sewn in California.

Short Sleeves, 1 T-shirt-style front pocket, 3 pockets in back for le bidon
collé, tubes, and/or encased meats.

*$60*, New, Size Large (slim fitting, but not lycra-slim): bottom of pit to
bottom of pit across the front, 22 inches; front length, down the center,
23 inches; back length, down the center, 27 ¾”.

2. T.A. Specialites Alize Crank Arms

165 mm length, 130 BCD

*$70*, Used, some small, shallow scratches in anodizing; threads look good.

Silver anodizing on the arms are just a bit brighter than that on Nitto
pearl or deluxe stems.

*+$8*, a used 9/10-speed T.A. Alize Chainring, 53T, with ramps and pins.
(No chain ring bolts or crank bolts.)

3. Tektro RL-340, new, black hoods and silver levers

*$13*, new

4. Tektro RL-340, used, black hoods and silver levers

*$10*, used minimally.

5. Nitto Technomic, 50mm extension, 25.4mm clamp diameter

*$18*, Used, the high and tight of stems: not pretty but gets the job done.

6. Finally, it seems the would-be Titanium King Cage was but a usurper of
origins unknown. I don't have a digital scale accurate enough to measure
its true weight, so its value as a titanium cage is also rather unknown.
Probably best to remove it from the sales table. It's certainly nice enough
for me.

[RBW] WTB: 650b front wheel and MAP + Ahearne Bars

2016-10-12 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Hello,

I need a front wheel for a 650b conversion for a rim-braked commuter. I've
got a Velocity dyad for the rear in silver, so a 32h or 36h dyad or a23
silver front wheel would be ideal.
I'd also be interested in a pacenti rimmed front wheel in 32 or 36h, or
possibly a wheelset if the rear is 120, 126, or 130 and the price is right.
Please let me know what you've got.

I've seen the ZAC19 wheelset that's super cheap on eBay through the uglyrhm
seller, but hoping someone here has something that they're not using. If
not, uglyrhm is my fall back plan.

I'd also like to try the wider 61.5 cm Ahearne + Map bars. Off-list
messages welcomed.

Thank you!

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish minivan hack for the dad- and mom-jeans set

2016-05-06 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Hah. Yeah, those pants. Electric salmon or something.

Thanks for the shield suggestions. Early planning included the idea for
chloroplast shields zip tied to bike and rack struts, but nicer weather
prevailed. I've got some old cannondale panniers I can add behind the pegs.
I had her try to put her foot in the spokes (without the wheel moving, of
course) and the various struts and her leg length do a good job of
preventing that (at least in theory). The accident reports remind us that
weird stuff does still happen and I should make more of an effort to
protect from the worst.

Consensus seems to be that behind peg is the area to shield? I see Edwin
says between struts. The panniers would handle both rear of rack struts and
between but not in front. Edwin's lacing idea sounds really effective too.
Thanks, I hadn't thought of that.

I'll follow up with another picture once I mount the panniers.

[RBW] Riv-ish minivan hack for the dad- and mom-jeans set

2016-05-05 Thread Leif Eckstrom

Hello listers,

I wanted to share this kid-hauling project that was inspired by ideas and
goods presented on this list, the blug, and such. I'm really happy with how
it turned out. It's very comfortable, surprisingly steady, and heartily
kid-approved. I think this set-up would only be improved on a bike with
actual riv-designed features: Looong top tube and longer wheelbase, for
starters. My seat is set low to compensate for small amount of clearance
behind the kid in front. Not really much of an imposition though; this is
easily my best minivan yet. Nevertheless, the stretched Clems and
Appaloosas would be even better, I imagine.

Anyway, if you're interested in what's what:

Front carrier: iBert, also recommend the Tot toter, if just carrying one.

Rear: steel tandem stoker stem bought from list-member Sean (thanks
again!); old riser bars cut down for aero tucks; Newbaums in kid A's
favorite color (eggplant); (bar-ends have been appropriately corked by the
by; twine to be applied soon); swim noodle and zip ties--totally stolen
from Grant P or whoever thought of those ideas in the bar wrap vid--but in
celeste, the fastest color; older Portland Design Works Payload rack with
steel tubes and a nicely oversize, half-circle of extra tubing near the
bottom--designed for bungee or pannier attachment but here holds the fender
washers, bolt, and drilled n cut down hand rail segments, making the new
old-school foot pegs. Naturally, the pegs were shellacked. I think that's
it. Thanks for all the inspiration, ideas, and parts swapping over the
years.

Best,

Leif

Chicago

Yes, totally agree that this looks fantastic--well done! Do you mind
sharing more details about how you painted the head tube? materials and
techniques, esp. over powder coat, I presume. Thanks again for sharing (and
restoring)!

[RBW] FS/FT: Tubus Vega Evo rack in Silver

2016-02-08 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Hello,

I have a new silver Tubus rack that I bought for a vintage, Riv-inspired
commuter, not realizing that Tubus carriers are designed for modern dropout
spacings of 130 OLN or greater.

The minimalist Vega Evo rack offers generous clearances for 65 mm wide
fenders or 60 mm tires (designed to fit 26" to 700c frames) and an
exceptional carrying capacity (55 pounds) for a rack that weighs about 560
grams. Tubus provides dimensional drawings if you have questions about the
fit or design.
See: http://www.tubus.com/documents/1391438739_Vega_evo_9120149_BM.pdf

The rack attaching hardware is included and comes in the white tube
photographed below.

The rack was scuffed slightly in shipping. I've tried to photograph that.
More photos available in this flickr album.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/9015075@N02/albums/72157662110781224
Will take more photos if necessary.

I'm looking for $105 plus actual shipping (probably about $20 CONUS), and
happy to try out bikeflights.com, which other listers have recommended for
service and price. Local pickup in Chicago would be great too. Paypal
friends and family or I'll split Paypal fee with buyer.

As for trades, I'm looking for a pair of the recently closed-out, sold-out
Pacenti SL23 x 32h in 650b. Unlikely, I know, but magic frequently happens
on this list, so I have to ask. I'm looking for black but would take silver
SL23 or polished PL23 in the 2014 extrusion. I'm one of many, no doubt, who
foolishly thought he had more time to buy a pair of these rims when Pacenti
was closing them out at $40/rim.

If possible, please respond off-list to leifeckstrom at gee mail dot com.

Many thanks,

Leif Eckstrom

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Leif Eckstrom
I'll echo what Bill says about how long it takes to mount this rack, and I
likewise found myself wishing for double eyelets, however I'm glad I
persevered since I like how it turned out and I learned a few things about
working with stainless steel and mounting racks that I'm glad to know now.

Background: I mounted this rack to a 700c 1979 Trek 930 with a Mafac
Competition centerpull brake. The clearances were tight--likely similar or
tighter than your Ram along with a similar fork rake. One possible
difference in our set-ups: I don't know how easy it is to disassemble the
PAUL centerpulls. Near the end of the project I found it useful to take off
the Mafac brake arms while keeping the brake's backing plate and brake
bolts and nuts assembled. I also didn't plan on mounting fenders with this
rack given the tight front and rear clearances. I'm thinking of converting
this bike to 650b at some point and would try fenders then.

Mounting the rack: I tried two different approaches or mounting locations.
Most online photos show folks mounting the tang to the brake bolt in front
of the crown. While the Mafac centerpulls should make this an easier
mounting choice, I found it difficult to make consecutive, tight bends in
the stainless steel tang. What happened was that I would make a strong bend
with the bench vise and try to hold other bends and angles stable with
C-Clamps, but they would inevitably lose their necessary shape and assume a
lesser angle. This didn't work well enough for me to make this a viable
option. You also need to do some rough measuring and cutting of the rack
tangs before you can begin to really get any precise idea of fit and this
tends to make you commit to a mounting point around the brake before you
really know if it's viable or not. So I eventually chose to mount the rack
as VO recommends (and as I would now recommend) with a daruma bolt under
the fork crown. The supplied VO daruma bolt was too long for me, but the
MAFAC daruma bolts that hold the brake pads to the arms worked for my
application and might work for yours too. If you mount it this way, the
factory bend is pretty accurate, but the tang is too long, so you need to
cut it before you can begin to see where you should drill a hole for the
daruma bolt to connect to the rack. Another option that I would try is to
cut off the tang altogether and use the Surly rear rack upper mounting kit.
Someone did this recently with the VO porteur rack and I was thinking you
could mount the rack to the PAUL or MAFAC brake arm bolts. See tenth photo
down:
http://www.nolifelikethislife.com/fairdaleweekender-tylerscaife-weekenderporteur/

In my case I cut the brake mounting tang shorter than would be ideal, but
it worked out in the end--thanks, no doubt, to the ease with which Mafacs
disassemble. Anyway, here are some photos and additional tips. Oh, I would
recommend getting the rack mounted before adding the fourth mounting
challenge of the fender. All of these mounting points (and a very limited
adjustability for those mounting points) make this a time-consuming
project.

Tips: use bolt cutters for cutting tangs; realize that multiple or
consecutive bends and angles on stainless steel tang are very difficult to
execute. I bought the steel Tubus rack mounting extension kit for dropout
eyelets hoping this would compensate for bad angles of bottom eyelets at
drop-outs. Didn't work for this application.
Tools used:
For bending tangs: bench vice and c-clamps and various pliers
For cutting stays and tang: bolt cutters
For drilling tang: center punch or spring loaded punch, series of drill
bits--start with smaller bits and work up to 7/32 inch or 1/4 inch bit,
deburr with circular and flat files, cobalt tipped drill bits recommended
for drilling stainless.

[RBW] Re: Love my S1...

2015-05-19 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Bobby,

How are the Guidonnet levers working with the canti brakes? Is that a pull
adjuster you've added to both brake lines? I'd like to improve the performance
of some tektro inverse levers that have had inadequate pull with both
centerpulls and old universal calipers. Want to try them with 80s diacompe
cantilevers before giving up on them. Was curious if I Might need what you've
got here, tho maybe those are leftover from when you were running V-brakes.
Thanks,
Leif

Re: [RBW] Re: Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?

2015-04-01 Thread Leif Eckstrom
Jim and Tim--would you mind commenting about possible customs or taxes charged
for those parts you ordered from Germany? Did you keep orders under $200 to
avoid this?

I'm looking for tips and experiences ordering parts from Europe or Japan to
u.s., if others have any information to share. I'm trying to help a neighbor
build a touring bike from an 80s mtn bike frame, so the exchange rate could be
a windfall for his project.
Thanks!
