Thanks for the nice comments on the bike. It is a beauty and I hope to sell
it to someone who appeciates a finely crafted Rivendell.
To answer a couple of questions, I'm located in N.H. It has Riv
Roly-Poly(?) tires on it. I think they are 28mm.

If anyone wants to write off list, best email to reach me is nhmichaels at

[RBW] Re: EDM / Tap Burner

2016-03-21 Thread R Michaels
You might take the bike to a machine shop and have them tack weld a piece
of metal to the broken bolt or ez-out so they can use it to unscrew the
bolt. I have had that done before and it works quite well. You wouldn't
think there is enough room to do that but a good welder can do amazing
things.

It's really nice to see that the head tube is painted cream but I am a
little disappointed that the butterscotch color looks quite different than
the sample that was given earlier. I do like the lighter looking color
much better and am hoping that the lighting of the photo is the reason for
the difference. After saying that, the color is the lesser part of the
reason I am getting my first Rivendell. I'm really looking forward for the

At first I wasn't sure about the bars but warmed to them very quickly and

Re: [RBW] Classic Friction Shifting

I love the looks of the old Rallys. I put one on my All Rounder when I
first built it up. I ended up less than pleased with the shifting
performance and switched it out after some time. It went on ebay and payed
for many vintage Suntour mechs that while not quite having the looks, shift
better by orders of magnitude.

One note: Find a washer for the mounting bolt before putting it on the
frame. That snap clip on the bolt will do a number on the hanger tab on
your frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Does anyone sew their own bags?

2010-11-24 Thread MichaelS
I made my own handlebar bag. It was a really fun project. I made it all by
hand stitching with a sewing awl. Very, very labor intensive, but it kept
me out of trouble for a few weekends and I got exactly what I wanted.

I used marine canvas that I got at a local place that specializes in
sailmaking and boat awnings. This is the stuff:
http://www.sailmakerssupply.com/prod_detail_list/53 At one point (maybe
still) Rivendell used to sell squares of it as the burrito wrap. Good
stuff! Waterproof without any coating. Nothing that I've made out of it
has ever, ever leaked.

Another tip, particularly for those with sewing machines, is to make
patterns out of newspaper or paper grocery bags. Then cut them out and sew
'em together to see if you like the size, style, how they hang, etc. I
guess you could even tape them together.

I'd love to see people's photos of homemade bags. Mine can be seen in the
last photo here:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2007/cc360-michaelsmith0807.html

Unfortunately, that photo was taken at the very end of a tour and it's full
of all kinds of junk. Normally it doesn't look so frumpy. Oh, and it's
big: sized to fit a six pack and still have room more.

Re: [RBW] perennial pants issue

2010-10-04 Thread MichaelS
I'm a big fan of Arborwear pants.

http://www.arborwear.com/products/pants

They were designed by and for tree climbers. They have a crotch gusset,
smart pocket placement, and they fit well: comfortably loose but not too
baggy. And they don't have that stupid hammer loop that Carharts have, the
only purpose of which seems to be to get caught on things. The Original
Tree Climber's Pant is heavy canvas similar to Carharts but my favorite is
the lightweight version, a very nice weight about halfway between Levis and
khakis. I haven't tried them, but they now offer a Tech Pant made of
nylon which looks like it could be a very nice cycling pant. No ankle
cinches, but I prefer reflective velcro straps anyway.

[RBW] Bio-pace curious?

2010-08-07 Thread MichaelS
I'm reorganizing some space and came across two Shimano Bio-pace
chainrings. One is 48 tooth, the other 38, 110 BCD. They are pretty beat
up looking (mostly on the inboard side) with scuffs from chains, but the
teeth are fairly intact, with lots of miles left in them. They came from
the basement of my friend's bike shop, so I'm sure they were a take-off
from a renovation of an 80's bike and it looks to me like the previous owner
didn't really know how to shift and got the chain stuck between the rings.
But let's face it, you're not going to be putting these on a showstopper
bike.

Free for shipping, but you have to promise me that they are going to be used
on a bike, not hoarded or sold on ebay.

[RBW] Gauging interest: Old WollyWarm Jerseys

2010-08-07 Thread MichaelS
I have two old WoolyWarm jerseys that I haven't worn in quite some time and
I'm wondering if anyone here might be interested in them. They are used.
Repeat, they are used. Some of the buttons have been re-sewn on, they have
some small holes in them, some stitching is loose. I toured with these
jerseys and they show it.

One is a first generation, with the slightly scratchier wool. Size XL. I
normally wear an XL t-shirt and this jersey is a bit snug. It's gold in
color. There are some small grease stains on the back, near the pockets,
and the tag is missing. Of the two, this is in rougher shape, but it's
still a nice piece of kit. Consider it beausage.

The second is blue and a later generation, with the less scratchy wool.
Size XXL, a bit loose on me. This one has the tags and the cute embroidered
sheep on the back (not present on the older version.) The top button on the
neck was stitched on with dental floss on my tour (it will *never* come off,
but the thread is white, not blue) and it's missing one of the buttons on
the back pocket. Besides the button issues, this is a really nice wool
jersey.

Both were washed primarily in Kookaburra wash and smell really good. The
gold one has a bit of discoloration around the collar.

I'm not really sure what to ask for these. They were quite expensive when I
bought them and I'd like to recoup some of that, but I don't want to gouge
anyone and I don't feel like dealing with picky ebay buyers. If you're
interested, make me on offer. I'd rather they get worn than sit in my
drawer for a few more years.

Cheers- Mike in sunny So. Boston, Mass

Re: [RBW] Re: 5-Boro NYC Ride May 2

2010-02-06 Thread MichaelS
AJ wrote of the Five Borough Bike Tour:

Looks like my new plan is to sit off to side and wait for the majority
of folks to start.

To which I reply:

I've done the 5 Borough ride a few times. It's lots of fun and a great way
to see the City. I would, however, recommend a different tact for dealing
with the crowds. You want to be *in front* of the crowds, not behind them,
lest you end up in the quagmire illustrated by Will's photo of the BQE.

First, make sure you pre-register and get your pinny sent to you in the mail
before the event. Then, on the day of the ride, go down early and have your
bagel somewhere down on Church St. or the lower part of 6th Ave. ***Do not
go down to Battery Park!*** Wait for the VIP group to go by (those people
paid a hefty price to a good cause for the privilege of being in front) then
when you see the first non-VIP riders start to pass, down the rest of your
coffee and join in. I would also recommend skipping the first rest stop or
two. If you need a drink, just stop at a deli.

This will put you tete de la course for the majority of the ride. The
congestion only intensifies as the day progresses. Another thing I would
recommend is skipping the festival at the end and heading straight to the
ferry (it's another mile or so) as soon as you get to Staten Island. I've
heard horror stories of hours of waiting in line to get back to Manhattan.

One last thing (if you've read this far...): Be super careful when you get
back into Manhattan. An entire morning of not worrying about traffic gets
you out of the mindset of riding around cars! It takes a few minutes before
you start riding with the healthy paranoia and your self preservation
instincts kick back in...

Enjoy the ride!

Long seat post. Silvery, with a bit of that fake titanium hue. 27.2

[RBW] Anyone in Boston need to ship a frame?

2010-01-12 Thread MichaelS
Hello All-

With all the recent talk about how well Rivendell packs frames and bikes I
thought I'd throw this out there... I bought a (non-rivendell) frame a few
weeks ago that was shipped to me in a Hillborne box with all the packing
material (foam blocks, shrink wrap, etc.) that has made Rivendell legendary
in the bike packing business. I live in a tiny apartment in Southie and
don't have the room to store it but can't for the life of me chuck it out on
the curb for recycling. Is anyone out in forum-land looking to pack up a
bike anytime soon and want to take this stuff off my hands? I'm going to
keep the plastic faux-hubs and maybe the seatpost plug but space is really
tight and I'd love to pass this along to someone who could use it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Slighty OT: cycling routes New York to Montreal

2010-01-10 Thread MichaelS
I would highly recommend NOT taking official NY bike routes. I rode part
of Rt 5 on a long tour a few years ago and it was terrible. New York seems
to design the bike routes to keep cyclists on major highways with crappy
bike lanes and under sign them, to boot. After a day and a half of riding
on busy roads with no scenery, I headed off the route, bought a good map,
and took to the tertiary roads and had a blast.

One thing that I have learned about bicycle touring is this: the quality and
enjoyment of any bike tour is directly proportional to the quality of the
maps, and inversely proportionate to the map's scale. If I were you, I'd go
out and get a Delorme Gazetteer ( http://tinyurl.com/lgwpbz ) and* *just
head north, sticking to the smallest roads possible. I actually cut out the
pages and put them in the map holder on my handlebar bag. One really nice
thing about the gazetteer maps is that they have a very small (large?) scale
(topo lines, even!) so you can see all the little side streets that you
cross and it lets you know exactly where you are. GPS ... Schmee-PS. Also,
it's a great psychological boost to see your progress on the map in inches
per hour, not inches per day... At $20, a very good investment.

I might also suggest that you pop over into Vermont on your way north.
There are a few ferries across Lake Champlain and as you are already going
multi-modal in taking the train home and it might be nice to add a boat to
your list!

The Route Verte, I believe, is a very different animal than the NY routes.
Whilst I have no personal experience with riding the bike in Canada, the RV
has a very good reputation as a pleasant and well thought out route system.

Whatever you choose to do, have fun and post pictures!

If you're going to order from overseas, I'd suggest going right the the

Under $100 plus shipping, but the VAT gets removed. Shipping will probably
be about $20, and removing the VAT will save about $10.

And you get to chose between black or green.

I can't say enough good things about dealing with Carradice. My bike was
stolen a few weeks ago along with one of my well used Super C panniers. I
didn't want to buy another set as I only needed the one. I emailed
Carradice and Margaret found a single left side bag and I had it in about a

[RBW] Looking for 57ish frame

2009-10-29 Thread MichaelS
Hello all-

My beloved 84 Trek was stolen last week due to a classic dumbass move by
me... I was at the ATM with the bike next to me, had to use the envelopes
at the next machine, took my eye off the bike and it was gone. Major
Bummer.

I'm going to take this as a door closing, window opening situation and use
this as an opportunity to build myself up a new bike. Ebay and the local
Craigslist are offering less than ideal options.

Does anyone have a 57ish lugged steel frame with horizontal dropouts (it's
going to be a fixed gear) gathering dust? Scratches and scrapes are fine as
long as the frame is structurally okay. Canti bosses would be a huge plus.
I'm also going to be looking for a 110 bcd crank, seatpost and other little
bits. I'm not really looking to break the bank, but if you've got anything
kicking around I'd love to hear about it and what you'd like to get for it.

Being close to central Austin is key for commuting. I commute year

efficiently than cars, it took me awhile to get used to the big

the cycling in Austin has improved alot in the 10 years I have been

[RBW] Re: shortening rack struts

2009-01-03 Thread MichaelS

I'm not at home right now, so I can't look and be absolutely certain,
but I think those struts are solid aluminum, right? That tubing
cutter is really only for thin walled tubes. You could probably get
one cheaper in the plumbing area of any hardware store. If you're
going to buy something, I'd really suggest going out and getting
yourself a hacksaw. They are really quite handy to have around.

I'll soon be putting my Mark's rack on my AHH and will need to shorten

wondering what folks think of this tool. Would it work well? Seems
like it could be more precise given that I don't have a vice. Hell, I
 don't have a hacksaw.

[RBW] Re: Brooks Panniers, Anyone?

2008-12-27 Thread MichaelS

Those are, or rather were, black. Lots of sunny touring miles and
years of commuting faded them to that, so you've got to *earn* a tan
set. (They actually look more gray than tan in real life.) It always
shocks people when I show them the inside, which hasn't faded. Makes
me feel like a real badass tourer...

I have a green Carradice saddlebag that I got from Riv years ago that
was a part of a special run. Every once in a while hear of Carradice
doing a special run for a rally or somesuch, then they sell the excess
through vendors. I think Wallbike had some interesting colored
Carradice bags a few years ago. Maybe get in touch with Carradice and
see if they have anything interesting.

Cheers- Mike

When it comes to panniers, I can't recommend highly enough the Super C
panniers form Carradice. They're made of stout cotton canvas, are
totally waterproof, and have the best mounting hardware I've ever
encountered. I've toured thousands of miles with them and I've had
them on my bike, daily, through five crappy, wet, icy, salty, slushy
Boston winters (working on number six) and don't have a single
complaint. My stuff has *never* gotten wet. I have a set of Ortliebs
for the front when I go on extended tours and really prefer the Super
Cs. My major issue with the Ortliebs is that they keep water *in* as
well as they keep it *out.* When you're on the road for days or
weeks in rainy weather this leads to constantly damp and soggy gear.
The Carradices seem to breathe a bit so the gear doesn't tend to
 stay as soggy.

Also, they've taken on a really nice patina (beausage?) The last

These Brooks bags are truly beautiful (more so than even the Lemolos,
IMHO) and will be hard to give up, but I do agree that they are
probably not cut out for touring. FWIW though, the material appears
to be very durable, thick canvas stock. Easily as thick and durable
as the old baggins panniers Riv. used to make (on that note, I've been

they come up with). The straps are also quite thick and solid
looking, however the way they are sewn into the bag is slightly less
solid and could be a potential point of failure. Also, there are only
straps for the top of the bag (none on the bottom), so the bags will
probably flop a bit, putting more stress on the aforementioned top
straps. All that being said, they are overall pretty solid looking.
I'd easily trust them for long day rides, and probably even on my 2-3
weekend trips. I'm seriously considering keeping them for just that
(and all my day-to-day around-town trafficking, obviously) and then
buying some Ortliebs or whatever whenever I plan a longer trip. It's
just that nagging conscience about owning two sets of panniers (one of
them a $300 set) that is keeping me from doing this...

Here's to hoping someone (Rivendell, say) will simply take this exact
Brooks design and slightly enlarge them, add proper mounts, and
improve the flap design. According to Brook's catalog, they are also
working on a 'touring' pannier set (coming 'soon', again) but I can
pretty much guarantee they will be unaffordable.

You don't need internal bracing for a good touring pannier - Ortlieb

Brick Lane panniers are not designed for long distance touring. As

If you are looking for panniers for touring but still smart enough for
around town use, check out this nice design from a one person outfit
 in Portland called Lemolo:

The bags appears to be a great design. Arkel mounting hardware is up
there with Ortlieb as among the most adaptable and durable. In my
 opinion the bags look great.

Not sure if it's because they are new or so expensive, but there isn't
