[RBW] Re: Bike Tour Stuff.

2011-04-24 Thread Mike Irwin
Mummy bag + Tarp. Another option would be a bivy. I've got a
Mountainsmith solo bivy that I use as a backup, in the event that I
need to stake out a spot on a day hike that I've somehow under-
estimated.

I've been a big fan of ultra-light backpacking and I try to keep my
packs sub-30lbs. That doesn't leave a lot of room for error, but I've
also realized that I tend to overpack.

However, I'd leave the Maxim mag in there out of pure necessity. Can't
leave the reading materials out of the picture.

:)

[RBW] WTB: A Few Final Items for My Build

2011-04-24 Thread Mike Irwin
Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to drop a quick note as I'm putting together my Hillborne
build. I'm looking for a few last items for the bike and wondered if
anyone has any of these components laying around as spares that they
wouldn't mind parting with. I've got a bit of a budget, but a portion
of that is going to a set of wheels that I'll have built. If any of
this stuff is out there in the Rivendell world, great. Otherwise, I'll
keep plugging away to build this one up right.

B17 saddle - Black, Honey, aged, anything really. I've got a Flyer,
but I think I'm going to keep that on my Trek grocery-getter. It's
served me well and I'd rather go the B17 route on this one.

Seatpost - 27.2

Bar End Shifters - I've setting up my Shimano 105 groupset w/ an 8-
speed cassette. The Shimano bar ends would work, but I think Silvers
would work too.

Bottle cages - Silver in color, preferred. But, then again, I'd
consider pretty much any color. I've got a nice set of Klean Kanteens
that I love.

I'm really excited to get this build done and get back out on the
roads. It's been far to long that I've been away from all of this.

Thanks,
Mike

Ok, I've got the seat post handled. Thank you to everyone who had a
seat post to offer. I've decided to go the S83 route on this one.

Still looking for a B17 saddle, bar ends and I'll throw a Dirt Drop in
here. I'd prefer a Dirt Drop, but I'd do a Technomic between 10-12cm.

Thanks again!

[RBW] FS: Orange Sam Hillborne and Goodies

2011-09-25 Thread Mike Irwin
Hi everyone,

After a number of months planning, acquiring, planning some more,
waiting, I was nearing a start to my Hillborne build. But alas, due to
a recent need to replace some photography equipment (ok, all of my
missing photography equipment), I've decided to be happy with my
current bicycle and pass along this set to someone else who wants to
build up a very nice Hillborne. I'd prefer to sell as a package deal
than to part out. There are some items you'll need to pick up (ie,
Grip tape, brake/shifting cables, etc), but I'd say you'd be 95%
there. I hadn't even unpacked most of this stuff.

Full package, shipped is $1100. I can certainly do PayPal. If you have
some nice digital photography equipment that you'd offer in trade, I
would be willing to do that too. Essentially, I'm trying to replace a
Canon T3i camera kit, with the 18-55mm lens and a Canon Normal EF 50mm
f/1.4 USM Autofocus lens.

Here's a link to everything...

HUB R SHIMANO FH-T660 LX 36 SIL Q/R
SS 14g THREADLESS SPOKES

Velox 17mm Cloth Rim tape

Shimano Ultegra 8-Speed Bar End Shift Levers
The whole deal - bar ends, etc, etc.

Brooks wrench and saddle cover

And everything else you see in the photos, but not the table or chairs

[RBW] Re: The Phoenix? (Hunqafied Hillborne, actually)

2011-01-18 Thread Mike Irwin
I'm insanely jealous of your morning ride. The weather looks
beautiful. While we don't have more than a few inches of snow on the
ground here in lovely Iowa, it did rain yesterday, which has made
everything a catastrophically frozen mess.

As a side note, I think you've persuaded me to keep my Albatross bars
as I build up my next bike. I had given a lot of thought to going with
a set of Noodles, but I'm thinking a nice upright position would be
perfect for 2011.

[RBW] Question on Bar Ends

2011-01-19 Thread Mike Irwin
I'm in the planning process for a new steel steed. I'm planning on
going with the Hillborne and building it up to be a fine, upright
country cruiser. I have a set of Albatross bars that I think I'd like
to use and I have the leather Brooks grips.

I'd like to know if anyone has experience w/ using bar ends with the
Brooks grips. The shifters will be from a Shimano 105 groupset. I
could always mount them in mountain bike fashion, but I thought the
bar ends would add a level of style and refinement fit for a proper
bicycle.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Pretty cool. I've been thinking about swapping the whole stem/
Albatross bars/thumbies/shifters from my older city bike to the

Thanks for the video, though. We'll see what happens in the build.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Protovelo

2009-10-26 Thread Mike Irwin

Up for sale is my Rivendell Protovelo 650b. Its a fantastic ride.
Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen circumstances, I've got to let
it go. Here's a basic run down of the bicycle. If you'd prefer a honey
brown B17 w/ copper rails, rather than the aged Flyer, no problem and
I'll switch it out from my other bike. Neither have even remotely been
worn in. I've put fewer than 200 miles on the Proto since I put it
together last spring.

Looking for $1,000 (shipped within the Continental US)

Rivendell Protovelo 650b
59 cm frame
650b Synergy rims
Shimano Deore hubs
Shimano 105 group + Flight Deck
SRAM 9-speed cassette
Nitto Grand Randoneur drop bars
Nitto Dirt Drop stem
Brooks aged Flyer saddle
Silver side pull brakes
Col de la Vie 37mm tires
Tange headset
Cork handlebar tape (ready for shellac)

If you're interested or have questions, please give me a shout at
rivendellbrownbom...@gmail.com.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Protovelo

2009-10-26 Thread Mike Irwin

Wow.

You're officially the first to give me a definite offer, so I'm
considering you first in line. To be fair, I've had a number of
questions come in with interest at the same time, so I've got to go
with you since you offered the complete price. No one else has
mentioned price. I'll cover shipping ground to you. You're just about
253 miles north of me, so that shouldn't be bad at all.

If you're still offering, I'd say this bicycle is sold pending
payment?

Thanks for everyone who has contacted me with questions.

Best regards to all and even though things have challenged me a bit
lately, I'm going to keep following this group. I've made some nice
acquaintances here and I have appreciated everyone's input throughout
my tenure in this group and with the Riv family.

Thanks,
Mike

[RBW] Re: Into Thick Air

2009-03-16 Thread Mike Irwin

I'm about 2/3 of the way through it. So far, (in my own opinion), its
a great cycling adventure story for non-cyclists.

That is one reason I get so excited about the Riv Reader to hit the
mailbox. I crave a lot of detailed information about the technical
aspect of cycling...the what's and how's more than the why's and
when's. I'm the kind of person who can sit around and read review
after review after review about components, etc...so maybe I'm a bad
critic of the book. I keep hoping that I'll find an adventure book
that not only describes a great adventure, but gives me the nitty
gritty detail on the equipment used, etc, to put it into very palpable
detail for me.

Other than that, its a fun read, but I'm not looking to bike his route
any time soon. ;)

[RBW] How Much Tape is Too Much Tape?

2009-03-17 Thread Mike Irwin

I'm getting ready to wrap my Nitto Randonneur bars. I'm thinking about
putting a set of the gel bar pads underneath the tape, but then I
started to wonder if just wrapping another set of cork tape around the
bars would be just as good. I'm planning on finishing with a shellac
coating.

I've never had shellac'ed bars before. Will they still have the give
that cork wrap has? Will I even be able to tell that I have gel pads
underneath?

Cool. The cloth over cork sounds interesting. Right now, I've got
enough cork wrap for two layers, which I think I'll try, but if this
isn't what I'm looking for, I may go after cloth over cork shellacked.

Maybe its because the albatross bars allow me to look around a little

[RBW] Connecting ROB'ers

2009-03-21 Thread Mike Irwin

I get a general sense of where a lot of the frequent contributors are
based on stories and pictures, but I'm wondering if there is another
way that we can essentially map out where members are? It might be a
little easier than asking, "Hey, anyone in or near Iowa?"

Has there ever been discussion related to creating regional chapters
or regional events for members? I love riding, don't have a lot of
folks around here that like "non-racing" rides and have wondered how
many other ROB'ers might be in my neck of the woods. (I'm prefacing
this with..."I'm not a fast rider, but I like creative long rides and
love talkin' shop.")

I know Forrest is in Iowa City.
I've seen a Bleriot in the East Village of Des Moines.
I think there might be a few other folks in Iowa, but may be spread
out a bit.

[RBW] Re: Connecting ROB'ers

2009-03-22 Thread Mike Irwin

It's funny that you mention a Facebook group. I'm in a band that uses
MySpace and Facebook a lot to communicate to fans, and I've always
felt it was a very one sided conversation. I decided to stop using
MySpace and Facebook for a couple weeks and just participate
(occasionally) in my Google Groups. I feel that the conversation is
much easier, although event coordination is a definite plus with a
tried and true social network.

[RBW] Re: Things you love about RBW and things that make you groan

2009-04-13 Thread Mike Irwin

I don't have any groans, but maybe a few wishes...

Love: The philosophy, the ride, the fit, the lifestyle, the passion
and the practicality. Honestly, if it wasn't for an article on Riv I
read in an old Dirt Rag mag, I doubt I would have ever discovered the
Company, this group of individuals and I wouldn't have spurred a
change in my life. At the time, I read the article, I didn't have any
real goals, I felt that I wasn't the kind of guy who "did" sports and
I certainly wouldn't have thought that a long distance bike ride would
have been something I could do. This community, propelled by Riv,
really got me pumped up to make the change and its something that I
can't put a price tag on or categorize. I ride my bike often. I seek
out more information about this thing I love and it keeps me
challenged to make new goals, without feeling like I have to "train"
or "compete."

Wish: More stuff for big guys (This isn't a stab at Riv, it's a wish
for the industry in general). As a guy who wears an XL t-shirt, I find
myself most comfortable in 3XL or sometimes a 4XL jersey. That feels
defeating. Wool is sized more closely to what I normally wear, but it
seems to sell out so quickly. As soon as I see one of the Riv jerseys
in a 3xl, I'm making my move.

[RBW] Re: Things you love about RBW and things that make you groan

2009-04-13 Thread Mike Irwin

I think most of this feedback has been fairly positive. I think we all
realize that Riv always tries to do the right thing, but posts like
this should be encouraged from time to time. Maybe "groan" is a word
that holds a lot of negative connotation, but think about it in the
same way that a company conducts feedback sessions or focus groups to
understand the underlying perceptions of its clients.

While some of our comments may seem overly picky, its important to get
a sense of the feeling among users.

[RBW] Re: things I like about Rivendell (ride report hijack)

2009-04-13 Thread Mike Irwin

I suppose the "comments" function would be dependent on the comfort
level of those who manage it.

But, having one stream of information would be nice. I tend to spend
less time actually searching through YouTube, than watching YouTube
vids embedded in a blog. I think that would be a nice feature. Pulling
in articles from the reader to a blog and allowing expanded content,
such as video/photo ride reports, how-to's, etc would be awesome.

I love getting the Reader in the mailbox, but at the same time, if
content was posted that would take me further in-depth or connect me
with other RBW'ers, then I know where my preference would be.

[RBW] Rise of the Brown Bomber

2009-04-16 Thread Mike Irwin

I was more excited today than the day I got my first car. Today was
the day that I put the finishing touches on my Rivendell Protovelo
650b and took it for the first spin.

I'm so jazzed. I had to eat an overstuffed burrito just to calm me
down a bit. (Nothing like a belly full of rice, beans and peppers to
put the brakes on the excitement.)

Anyway, I took an easy 3 mile roll. When I got back, my wife was
waiting with the camera. She knew I'd want to snap pics and post
immediately.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36294...@n03/sets/72157616898042722/

A short backstory...my first experience with a Riv was a Quickbeam I
picked up. Geared riding is more suited for my needs, so after a
little business, I was able to set off on a new project. The frame put
in its due time with Colorado Dave. (In its second life, the "Brown
Bomber" as it was aptly named in this forum, will hope to see mostly
rolling hills...at least for the next few months...)

It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to build it up. In fact,
it took me 7 months. I kept going back and forth between an upright
and a traditional randonneur-style bike. My intent is to finally get
out for some real nice long adventures. I've got the upright thing
covered, so I decided to go full speed ahead with the randonneur
design.

I spent hours/days/weeks staring at the builds on Cyclofiend.com.
(Thanks Jim for all your efforts...an invaluable asset during my
build.)

I needed a little help here and there and worked with my LBS to get
through the finish line. I learned a lot in the process. My LBS owner
was in awe and I showed him a few of the other models on the site.

Anyway, that's my story. Thanks for everyone's patience and advice as
I asked questions (often times complete newbie Q's) over the past few
months.

[RBW] Re: Rise of the Brown Bomber

Having the perfect fit is no joke. As I took off from my driveway, it
felt as comfortable as an old, broken in baseball glove. I noticed
that about the QB too, but not to this extent. Mind you, it was only 3
miles, but it felt like I could ride all day...and I was in a flannel
shirt, Carhartt jeans and Birkenstocks. Ha!

[RBW] Ride Report: Along the Des Moines River

2009-05-03 Thread Mike Irwin

Today was our leisurely cycling group's Spring Ride. (However, I
forgot both my Flip video cam and my digital camera in my car and
didn't realize that I'd left it behind for about 20 minutes into the
ride...another rider took some pics, so I'll try to post something up
soon.)

For anyone that is remotely familiar with Central Iowa, we started in
Des Moines (at the Birdland Marina) and traveled north along the Des
Moines River to the Saylorville Dam. I was on my Protovelo and it was
a great chance to get out with the temperature around 70 F for most of
the ride. The others in our small group (five in total) were mostly on
steel bikes from the 70's and early 80's. (I've been somewhat
successful in cultivating a small group of individuals who enjoy a
tour rather than a race and have embraced the thought of a rolling
bicycle adventure/picnic.)

The route hugs the river pretty close and snakes through some woodland
area. For anyone that heard about Iowa's 150 year flood that is
apparently hitting every 15 years now (at least in the Des Moines
area), the route rolls through some of the hardest hit areas. It was
nice to discover that our Park and Rec group had been diligently
working to clean up the trail over the past 12 months.

The ride finished with a BBQ in Union Park, a park on Des Moines'
north side. All in all, a successful day and a great kickoff for many
more rides to come.

As promised, photos...

Now, the scenery isn't nearly as breath-taking as some of the other
ride report photos I've seen, but it was a beautiful day and everyone
in the party was generally happy with the ride, the conversation and
the grub.

Hopefully, I'll have a few other opportunities in the near future to
document some leisurely travels. Until then, I'm going to enjoy the
wind...

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Along the Des Moines River

2009-05-06 Thread Mike Irwin

I wish I could but the wife and I will be out of town. I've wanted to
ride up to Jefferson for some time and I'm thinking that it might be a
good ride for me to do sometime this year. For those of you who are
unfamiliar with the Tour de Raccoon, the ride heads northwest out of
Des Moines to a smaller community called Jefferson. Its maybe 50 miles
away, but you end up passing through all of these great Iowa
communities on the route and its pretty easy to get distracted. The
options once you get there include camping and a couple of B&B's. I've
thought about staying at one of the B&B's and keeping my bike really
light.

Are you headed up that route, Forrest and if so, what will you be
riding?
