Oh, oh. also open to any of the following:

   - single thumb shifter mount with shifter (left OR right)
   - single thumb shifter mount with Silver2 Shifter (left OR right)
   - VO Thumb Shifter Mounts
   - Single VO Thumb Shifter Mounts
   - Not Paul Thumb Shifter mounts for Shimano, unless they're priced
   REALLY well.

THANK U

They are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds
are second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they
have a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that
would fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular.
I've had at least 6 different Riv's. All fine bikes but not as fine as a
Goodrich. You won't be disappointed and if you are you'll certainly be
 able
to find someone to take it off your hands.

As a point of fact, the All Rounder might very well have been made by
Curt Goodrich. If not him, then Joe Starck or, maybe Richard Sachs. If
the builder is an important consideration to you (and I'd agree it might
 as
well be), then you won't go wrong with that one.

The Ram is one of the earlier ones - probably orange prior to the
re-paint (and brake mod?). It and both of the Homers (or Homer and
re-painted Saluki) are Toyo built. Also very high quality. (The lugs are
 the giveaway)

There are a couple frames I'm not familiar with. Since this is where all
the experts are, is there anything I should be looking for? I assume the
grey AHH and the brown Ram are custom paint jobs. Is the orange one likely
custom or an early Riv? And thoughts on the Goodrich? They all look to be
fairly similar builds, and I'm wondering if nothing differentiates when I
ride them, if I should consider anything else before buying (assuming the
boss OKs it. Ha). I do see the brakes are different on the AHH models.
 Thanks, everyone.

Re: [RBW] I want to see your Legolases

2022-11-01 Thread Nikko in Oakland
yup, these are the UD 700x42mm Rosés, and certainly the biggest tire I can
fit on the bike comfortably. I also think the bike really feels at home on
700x38mm tires, but I don't like the cornering control on steilacoom tires
vs the Rosés, so I'm sticking to that. If I have to move to slicks in the
roadie form, I'll probably stick to gravel king/RH 700x35 or 700x38mm
slicks.

[RBW] Re: Randonneuring Bike

2022-08-25 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Bill (via Toshi)
Off topic, but I gotta hear more about this delineation between a racing
cyclocross bike and an aggressive gravel bike. I have my own thoughts on
the same topic, but i'm happy to treat a cyclocross bike as a gravel bike
any day.

On topic, I was dithering pretty heavily on whether or not my Legolas was
going to be my brevet bike or not, and decided against it for some of the
same reasons Bill mentioned. A bit too responsive (great for short rides
and hard corners), and it's set up slightly more aggressive than my past
rando bikes. I was initially hunting down a 60cm Rambouillet for brevets
and commuting, but ended up stumbling upon a good deal on a Boulder Brevet
that is literally the perfect bike for me.

My two cents... Ram, AHH, Sam, Roadini, Roadeo are your better bets for
rando, from best to least best (mostly because of luggage options and the
such). At Del Puerto 200km 2021, I did see someone on a really sick ruby or
red Atlantis.

[RBW] Re: New 650b Rims from Crust

2022-07-07 Thread Nikko in Oakland
I have a pair of the 700c complete wheelsets and I probably put them
through more rough stuff than they were intended to be on.

I've ridden them for about 500-600 miles, about 40% gravel (nothing super
rough) and 60% road in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills. I ride my bikes kind of
hard, with a lot of out of the saddle, high torque efforts. I'm never
riding any trails that I'd be more comfortable on a front suspension bike
on. The wheels were machine built, so they went out of true rather quickly
which was expected. At ~200 miles, I gave them a little touch true to keep
them laterally true. But shortly after (~70 miles later), they went out of
true again, and I attributed this to my lack of experience truing wheels,
it being machine-built wheel, how light the rim is, and/or how hard i'm
pushing them.

An acquaintance mentioned that he had to true his wheelset about 5 times
before they stayed true. I'm not super well equipped to true wheels
appropriately, so this would have gotten expensive for me to get a shop to
do this regularly, so I just got them detensioned/retensioned by a trusted
wheel builder. The wheel builder mentioned that the rear hub is a bit
crunchy already and he suggested I replace the bearings and clean out the
internals to get 'em smooth again. I wasn't thrilled to hear that, but it's
all good.

Anyways, the wheels are light and really responsive, I like how quickly
they spin up, and they're priced really well. But since I'm not a
wheelbuilder-type, I think this is the last machine-built wheelset I ever
buy. The wheels were pretty, light, and cheap-ish. But as a friend says,
strong, light, cheap; you can only pick two.

[RBW] Re: FS: 54cm Hunqapillar (green) in SF

2022-06-01 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Thank you for the curiosity & nudge, Bill! I agree, this is definitely a
forever bike. I've just come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to
be someone who wants to go on a loaded tour, and I'd be leaning on my
front-loaded low-trail bike for a lightweight overnight or a credit card
tour. For the last year, this bike has only been used for a handful of
commutes and weekly farmers market runs. It deserves a fuller life.

*Below are some details that might have been omitted...*

Addressing Bill's questions:

   - Left-side Silver 1 Downtube shifter, for FD shifting
   - Rivendell Silver Crank length is 170mm. (< 50 miles!!!)
   - Saddle height: 75.5cm, my PBH ~87cm. Standover is listed at around
   ~83.5cm.

Other details:

   - The front derailleur model: Shimano XT FD-786 (~500 miles)
   - The rear derailleur model: Shimano Deore RD-591 (~500 miles)
   - Cassette: SRAM 970 (~300 miles)

Other resources!

   - Bike Insights
   <https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5b8578f548f3a30004789af0>
   - Hunq Release Sheet from Riv
   <http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/rbw/pdf/original_hunaqbook_pdf.pdf> -
   AKA Hunaqbook

I can give the bike a good ol' wash and clean up/re-lube the drive train
too. I realize I probably should have hit some spots with touch up paint
and cleaned it more before posting, but here we are.

[RBW] WTT: My used Fleecer Ridge for Antelope Hill

2022-04-21 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Hey there,

I have Fleecer Ridge tires on my Hunq but I'm not using it for off-road
stuff anymore and it's primarily ridden on pavement.

Anybody want to trade my used Fleecer Ridge tires for your Antelope Hill
tires? Tires have about 500 miles of use on them with plenty of life left.

[RBW] Re: NBOD: New Bike Ordered Day! The mythical canti-Roa!

2022-04-05 Thread Nikko in Oakland
I love that you're gonna have a Legolas and a canti-Roadeo. Other than the
bb drop, what are the main geometry differences between the two? The ST/HT
angle is more forward, correct? And they both will have different fork
rake?
Also, I think it's a solid choice for the tuxedo paint. That Sam is one of
my favorite Rivs to look at.

 secret that I wanted a Canti-Roa. There have been Canti-Roms, Canti-Rams,

be a Nobilette build, constructed of Roadeo/Legolas tubing, Roadeo
Geometry, but the clearances of my Canti-Hillborne. Putting my money

existing Roadeo, that I'd put all your dollars right back to Riv and order
 a Canti-Roa.

Well, it finally happened. Lister Corwin needed my 59 Roadeo frame and
fork, and today I sent all his dollars plus several of my own back to
Rivendell to order a Canti-Roadeo. Mark Abele and I are ironing out the

Thanks!

PBH is ~86-87cm
Saddle Height in the photo is probably closer to 75cm. My suggested saddle
height from fits is ~75.5cm-76cm for my more spirited bikes.

2021-12-06 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Ooo! I might be on the higher end of the spectrum... I thought I had to
size down because frames ran big, but that's not true for this rambo.

I think I'm actually looking for a 58cm or a 60cm!! I'm using my 57cm
Ritchey Road (disc) as a comparison.

Anybody holding a 56cm or 58cm Rambouillet in green (no other color will do

I want a bike that I can turn into some rando-ish, fendered bike, and the
Rambo is the bike I have swooned over most.

For trades, I don't have many riv-y bikes, but I do have a 55cm Ritchey

[RBW] WTB: Silver or Dia Comp Downtube Shifter or pair of Bar End Shifters

2020-11-03 Thread Nikko in Oakland
Hey y'all,

I'm running a SRAM RD now, but can see that crapping out soon and having to
move to this Shimano XT RD. I have a right downtube shifter, but need a
left one to match. My right DT shifter is a Dia Comp one
. I'd love a
matching one, but would be fine with any Silver DT shifter, too.

Alternatively, if someone has a pair of bar-end shifters lying around, I'd
love to buy those used.

Holler at me,
Nikko

Re: [RBW] silver shifter slip under load

Shoulda updated y'all!!

*> And I had incorrectly run the cable at the pinch bolt. I had been going
under the tab, I needed to go over top the tab (consulted installation
manual and some forums). This changed the leverage a bit to my advantage*
Yes, I actually did the *sme *thing. Once I run over top the tab
instead of under, it started working as expected. Finally took a longer
ride yesterday with the shifters and it's a bit stiff, but I think that's
just me getting used to it vs having them on the downtube. I feel like it
was just a rookie mistake on my behalf, but happy with them now.
