Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.

2018-01-31 Thread Philip Kim
Price also has to go up considering Taiwan has made significant investment in
their bike factory technology and aqcuiring more skilled labor and it's fast
approaching the best factories in the world that can fulfill on a production
scale in high quality frames.

Same thing happened to Nike in S Korea back in the 80s IIRC. Nike initially got
the cheap shoes they wanted, but S Korean factories invested in their shoe
factory technology and prices rose to reflect the quality produced. Nike tried
to make their shoes elsewhere and suffered a loss in quality. So now their
premium shoe lines are made in S Korea factories.

[RBW] Honjo fenders on Cheviot?

2018-01-31 Thread Philip Kim
Wondering if anyone has put honjo fenders on a cheviot (650b version)?
Looking at the hammered fenders. I'm not sure if they would fit under
tektro 559's with 42's.

Would it require Paul Racers? If so, how did you configure the rear brakes?

Found some pics online, but nothing too detailed that showed cable routing
and all that.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.

2018-01-31 Thread Philip Kim
not sure what you mean? do you mean mass produced parts (like shimano
components, etc) and their price in US relative to their price in other
parts of the world? Do you mean pricing on bikes like Surly/All city in the
US is too high? That Americans overpay for the current bike trends like
race bikes, gravel bikes, etc.?

Rivendell's pricing is pretty competitive to the value provided for folks
that like steel lugged bikes, but don't want to go custom. They don't
really have comparable frame sellers for their Taiwanese frames.

Their MUSA frames are reaching the same prices offered by high quality
custom builders. Only, Rivendell's options are not custom, they are stock.

Started on Hetres on a trek elance 650b conversion. I went for a short

up riding 45 miles without realizing I had gone that far. After that, I

Re: [RBW] Tektro R559 vs. Dia-Compe 750 centerpulls.

2018-01-27 Thread Philip Kim
If you only need 65mm brake reach the centerbolt Paul Racers are great, the
brazeon versions are even better.

The tekto 559s with koolstop worked great for use with flat bar brake levers,
but didn't feel great with road brake levers.

Not a fan of the dia compe 750s, though they look the best.

2018-01-04 Thread Philip Kim
studded knobs aren't for me. the pumpkin ridge bite into powdered snow on
the road really well, and then shed that snow off the tire very well. so
the tire actually will rotate in the snow, instead of spinning and digging
deeper into the snow with no movement.

i didn't really expect much, but its pretty amazing really. Like Deacon, I
too, ride slow and steady and have to vary my pedaling a bit. I've been
looking for some snow tires too, just surprised that a "smaller" tire works
so well. Studded tires have its uses, but i'd rather ride these pumpkin
ridges and ride slower/more careful than ride with such heavy tires, with
studs that wear out so quickly considering how expensive they are.

I am of the belief I should be riding more alert and careful in any
inclement weather anyways.

[RBW] Allbird wool shoes? Your experiences?

2017-11-18 Thread Philip Kim
Hey lum,

Just got a pair of these for myself and fiance.

We both love it. I've ridden with platform pedals and they are pretty comfy.
Sole feels solid.

They are pretty snug with thick socks but break in over time.

I personally wear them for casual and commuting on flat pedals. Worn then down
to 35 with socks and not too bad. There isn't really a protective front for
toestraps. I would be them on par with Nike Frees, but better quality.

I think I'll appreciate them a lot in the summer as I don't like to wear socks
when it's hot out.

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-30 Thread Philip Kim
I like full frame bags as it allows you to pack heavier items towards the
bottom and in between the frame so the bike feels more planted. The con is of
course limited space so you got a pack pretty well, which can be more time
consuming.

[RBW] Re: Largest tires on Cheviots

switchback hills on velocity a23 rims without fenders. although you could
modify fenders with sheldon fender nuts and L brackets, so that the fender
doesn't go under the bridges, and cutting it up to get max clearance.

i highly suggest paul racer on the front, and whatever sidepulls on the
rear.

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-04 Thread Philip Kim
i've had a lot of rivs over the past year - sam, chev, hunq, joe appaloosa,
soma san marcos. for me it was about fit i always seemed to fall right in
between. so i sold everything and got a custom. while i was waiting for the
custom, i ordered the appaloosa and figured if it doesn't work i can just
resell it (probably like many on here). my plan was to ride the appaloosa
until the custom came so I pre-ordered one. well living on the east cost
and going through a riv dealer i ended up getting the appaloosa right
around the same time as i got my custom. i only sold my appaloosa as i'm
taking the next step with my partner and need to save funds for all the
expenses that come along with it. of course, the appaloosa being a
"production" frame was on the chopping block rather than my newly built
custom.

i will say fit and ride-wise i liked the Appaloosa best. once i get
situated i plan on buying one if i can make the budget work.

more road/dirt roads - appaloosa

more rougher single track, heavier loading - hunqapillar

even if I were 51% pavement and 49% dirt, i would choose the appaloosa. it

Srry to hear that Igor, I know how it goes. A one bike hard limit has been
freeing for myself personally. It's surprising how adaptable bike use can be

Best of luck! This one is a good one at a good price.

It's a demi-porteur/ rando rack he built himself under orc racks.

I have had two of his racks, and still have one of them on my girlfriend's

30lb of groceries on it, but it held up great.

Highly recommend a rack from him.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Hunqapillar (54 cm) complete bike

2017-07-20 Thread Philip Kim
yes a smaller seat post, to provide more standover and to account for tire
size, there's going to be about 4-5cm difference in tire height between a
hunq and a bleriot or road bike, which is the difference between riding a
54cm hunq and a 57cm bleriot or road.

the ritcheys and stumpjumpers were level top tubes on 26" wheels.

Re: [RBW] Brake Adjustment: Paul Racers vs. Cantilevers

2017-06-23 Thread Philip Kim
Ive tried almost all of Paul brake offerings besides their disc brakes.

I've had good luck setting up their cantis. The touring cantis feel a bit more
powerful, but I like the wide profile for larger tires and more clearance for
mud and slightly better modulation. Out of all Paul brakes that fit on canti
posts my favorite have to be the Minimotos. They have the power of the
Motolites without the grabbiness and can be run with road levers. So if you're
gonna run 38s with fenders i think they are the ticket.

However, my current rig has Paul Racers on brazeons and I'm very glad I went
this choice. Powerful and great modulation. The straddle cable height does not
affect braking on the Racers as much as it does on the cantis, I believe Paul
recommends an inch or two of straddle car height. They are my favorite rim
brakes by a smidge over Minimotos because they offer more tire clearance.

Whichever choice you go through, the Paul Moon Units are definitely worth it -
they make the set up much easier.

I would be curious to see how Paul Racers compare to Compass Centerpulls, as i
recall (maybe BQ or Jan's blog) that Jan had a hand in the Racers getting
produced but not sure how much a hand he had in designing it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-06-23 Thread Philip Kim
also to add, i don't think rivendell has ever made a choice based on saving
themselves money, moreso saving the customer money. i rather like the quill
stem even if for aesthetic reasons. never had a problem with them.

OTOH i bought an old raleigh (before they moved production from UK), and
the steerer tube was bent inside the headtube, so it stuck if you turned
too far one way. Of course, it was also a few decades old before I rode it
and who knows what the previous owners did to it before it got to me. I
still rode it for a few years until it finally seized.
