Re: [RBW] Re: Single Speed (QB/SO/RU..) Questions

2023-09-24 Thread Scott G.
Velocio was inventor of the floating chain, Blake rode with him in 1913 an
became a convert
to the floating chain. Velocio abandoned the floating chain in 1919.
Blake wrote an article in the CTC Gazette in 1915 promoting the floating
chain, in comparison
to the BSA 3 speed hub. The Brits of the era considered derailleurs a
French plot to destroy
good English cycle chains by running them in a less then perfect straight
line.

Source VCC Cycling History #3, Vernon Blake.
Which includes a Cycling article from 1919, showing how to setup a floating
chain bike,
nicely illustrated.

Patrick, I'm not sure what you are asking. You've got some kind of

you looking to buy a different cassette body that you will install into
your existing rear wheel to carry two cogs? Or are you looking to buy a
different rear hub? Or a different rear wheel?

The easiest thing may be to just run a "normal" geared rear wheel and
run the needed stack of spacers along with two cogs to get you what you
want. I'm running three cogs on a short Capper cassette on one of my
 120mm
rear end bikes, but I don't think your Monocog is a 120mm bike. I imagine
there are a number of ways you could run two cogs on your Monocog. You
would just need to decide that you are going to do it and start spending.
Given that you've been looking to replace the Monocog with a custom, maybe
your gearing solution should be integrated with your frame choice.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis evolution?

2021-10-21 Thread Scott G.
The first version had curvy chain stays (starlight?), steeper head angle
and less rear tire clearance.
2nd version had chain stays with one curve, more tire clearance, and plus
.5 degree on the head angle.
Both were Toyo built.

[RBW] Re: Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-14 Thread Scott G.
Plastic bags first, then some packaging stretch film, them some clear
packing tape
to secure the stretch film. Zip tie the pipe insulation.
I do the above routine for the seat, and shifty bits on the handlebars.
Carry the tape & film with you on the trip, you can make repairs at rest
stops.
Think like an Egyptian Embalmer, wrap for the ages.

Apply the brake also turns on regen, very Prius like.

On ride of 20 miles with 1500 feet of climbing uses 10% or less of the
battery.
The whole ride is 35 miles with 2300 feet, 40% of battery used, the way
back is flatter. This with using some regen level 1 on the flats, and the
higher
levels on down hills. Bike is rideable in bike mode aka zero assist.

Does this mean that Riv is planning a Vernon Blake edition of the SimpleOne
?

From Classic Lightweights..

The floating chain systems as used by Blake features a triple chain ring
and single freewheel on each side of the rear hub. A steel pulley was
fitted to the rear drop-out which was needed to prevent the chain coming
off when in low gear. He also fitted a couple of chain guides to the chain
stay. Down changes were made with the toe and up ones via a small metal
hook used to pick up the chain. Blake became very expert at this and could
make changes at speed. (3). He had a solution to one of the problems
encountered by modern mountain bikers when using the small chainring in
very muddy conditions: that of ‘chain suck’:

The varied the straddle cable length, shorter = more ummphh on low profile

high profile brakes power varied little with different straddle cable

I keep thinking that I ought to get a multispeed rear wheel for at least one
of my fixies, but it would be a hub gear wheel that I could, largely, just
shove in the dropouts and ride.

Sturmey AW hubs are at the local Goodwill, you just have to haul away
the bike.

I had a Trek 412 setup with an AW for a while, the gearing is not as
dumb as you'd
think, at least for a club rider. The evil neutral problem would show
up sometimes.

The current AW-NIG, have no neutral.
A Rohloff grade FM hub, that actually would stay in low gear would be
great.
