Hi Eric,

Not sure if you'll entertain splitting things up, but I'd like to buy the
size L shorts. Are they black or green? I couldn't tell from the post.

Thanks,

I would like to put some bigger tires on my Toyo Atlantis for some of the

Barlow Pass and am pretty clueless about off-road tires In general and what to
look for. Any advice?

Recent pictures from fellow El Cerrito resident Hillbubba have been quite
inspirational.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-12-04 Thread Thomas B
The Compass tires are great, no question in my mind. I've been commuting on
them since summer. However, when the wet weather came to the Bay Area I
started getting flats riding through pretty awful streets of Richmond and
put Pasela TG's back on.

Unfortunately, my Compass experience got me itching for something a bit
more lively than the TG's. The Soma New Xpres sound good - I was also
considering Vittoria Voyager Hyper after trawling old posts. Anyone care to
compare those apples?

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2014-01-01 Thread Thomas B
Here is a nice looking 60cm 650b Pelican.

http://www.boyzonthehoods.com/new-randonneuse-day/

I think 60cm 650b looks good on all the bikes discussed here, but there is
a point, at ~62-63cm when the head tubes gets so large that things look a
bit out of proportion to my eye. Having said that it's difficult to put an
particular number on it because I think the bend of the fork influences the
look too, e.g. some of the larger MAP's still look nice. There is a 65cm
his flkr recently.
I've read about the downsides of long head tubes for frame flex. Maybe
that's part of the reason Grant likes the DTT.

hear that's a cool size? It's only really good for smaller bikes.
Thankfully they have since changed their minds to a whole run a 650b
Pelicans up to 60 I think.

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2014-01-01 Thread Thomas B
Here is are some pictures of a well-proportioned (to me) 60cm 650b Pelican:

http://www.boyzonthehoods.com/new-randonneuse-day/

The other bikes mentioned in this thread also look good in my opinion.
However, I think there is a size (~62-63cm) when the head tube starts
looking too long. It's not an exact point because I think the position of
bend of the fork influences things. For instance a recent 65cm 650b rando
bike on MAP cycles flkr looks good.

I guess a long head tube also brings excessive frame-flex into
consideration - something Grant might address with a DTT.

[RBW] FS: 60cm STT Sam Hillborne F/F +fenders + racks + wheels

2013-10-06 Thread Thomas B
Up for sale is my 60cm STT, lovely green Sam frame and fork, fitted with
Bethoud SS fenders, a Nitto top rack and Nitto mini-front. The wheels are
XT hubs (old kind) laced to Mavic A119 rims in silver 36 spoke front/rear,
shod with Panaracer Paselas 37mm.

The frame is in good condition, but with a number of chips in the paint
(please take a look at the photos:
https://plus.google.com/100421127368153243355/posts/HptKpf6MECa).
The wheels and tires are still in great shape.

I used this as a commuter and enjoyed it a lot, but having a pbh of 89cm
and being between the old SH sizes I always felt this frame size was a bit
much for me.
I carried my workbag up front in a basket and actually liked the handling
more that way than having the load on the top rack at back. I live in the
East Bay and after oggling for a while I finally pulled the trigger on a
Box Dog Pelican. I am a one bike guy and wanted to give something else a
try.

I am asking $850. Buyer pays shipping.

Please contact me off list if interested.

[RBW] Long-low for sale in SF Craigslist

2011-11-10 Thread Thomas B
I wanted to get some advice on a recent posting for a +10 year old
Long Low advertised on Bay area Craigslist. I've read some of the
older comments on this discussion group and it seems like a frameset
that has been offered and discussed before several times, albeit at
higher prices.

Please check out the post. 'Rivendell Long Low Preproduction - 60cm
Frame Fork Only - $1350' -
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/2694438431.html

The price seems a bit high to me seeing as the complete bike retailed
at ~$2450, back in the late 90's (?). Also note there is a small dent
in the TT.

I am new to bikes and RBW but would like a quality comfortable steel
bike. Any advice you guys could give would be appreciated. Does the
fact it is preproduction make it any less of a bike? Are canti brakes
any good?

[RBW] Re: Long-low for sale in SF Craigslist

2011-11-10 Thread Thomas B
Thanks for the discussion. I am going to go give it a test ride
today.

To answer earlier threads, this would be my first 'good' bike. Using
it for commuting (14 mile RT) with a big hill in the EBay. But my hope
is to ride around the hills near my house on weekends as well.

I've been seriously considering a Jamis Quest in a 61cm - so the
handle bars are a bit higher up. Salsa Casserroll (a relaxed road
bike), with beefed up components. Gunnar sport also looks good,
although no tests so far and Traitor exile. The last kind of made me
notice how pretty lugs are and so I considered climbing the money tree
a bit further and started looking at RBW. I agree a visit to the RBW
shop would be a good idea!
