[RBW] Re: FS - Sam Hillborne - Orange with Canti brakes $1800 (Seattle)

2012-03-05 Thread Tom Taylor
Hi all - the frame here has sold. Some parts, in particular the
wheelset and tires will be reposted soon once I figure out what stays
and what goes.

I had some reports that trying to contact me via the list did not work
- please use email instead if you are interested.

Cheers.

[RBW] FS - Sam Hillborne - Orange with Canti brakes $1800 (Seattle)

2012-02-29 Thread Tom Taylor
Hi all -

I have a Sam Hillborne, of the earlier orange cantilever brake
variety. In very good condition cosmetically with less than 200 miles
on a professional build composed of almost all new parts.

Build details below.

More photos at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/75431624@N03/sets/72157629444619317/

I am in Seattle and would love to sell local. Otherwise we'll figure
out packing and shipping.

It's a great ride but just not my thing. I've been riding an RB-1 for
years and while the ride was absolutely a blast, I finally tired of
the limited tire clearance and ugly hacks rqruired to make fenders
work. I swung too far here though, and want to get back to something
more sporty. On the off chance anyone wants to trade a Roadeo or
similar, I might be game...

Anyway, more:

To replicate this build would cost ~$2225 before taxes and misc. small
parts - and that's not including a rear der. or crankset - I didn't
price those out since they are vintage, but figure another $200 for
new equipment there and you're pushing $2500. Also, if you like the
orange, like cantilever brakes, and don't want a second top tube, this
is the way to go.

Full disclosure: I am the second owner of this frame (bought used
because I wanted canti's and no second top tube). there are small
paint chips here and there - not very many. The worst offender is
pictured on the seat stay and is the result of a bag hupe (http://
www.rivbike.com/product-p/r9.htm). The headset has some marring on the
lock nut, and the front brake barrel adjuster also has some marring.
Overall though, this is very minor stuff - frame and components all in
very good condition mechanically and cosmetically.

Build details:

Re: [RBW] No DT shifter boss

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Taylor
Fwiw, I had a conversation about this with Kevin at Riv when I was in the
process of buying my Sam H. His explanation was that, what with the sloping
top tube and the typical high bar setup, down tube shifters are way down there,
a big reach, and don't make sense. So the bike is basically designed for bar
ends. Never been on one to test this (mine is still an in progress build), but
it sounds good.

[RBW] WTB: seatpost, stem

2011-09-17 Thread Tom Taylor
Hi all -

I'm looking for a decent 27.2 seatpost (sub $30 - prefer something
used/vintage and nice to cheap and new) and, on the off chance anyone
has one they want to part with, a Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem (26.0 x
7mm - or close). No real luck on ebay so far. Drop a note if you've
got anything that fits the bill.
