Re: [RBW] Cycling caps: useful or merely decorative?

2024-10-11 Thread Tom Wyland
I wear cycling hats under my helmet every time I ride. I have no hair on my
head, so it helps catch the sweat and protect me from sunburn. I also found
that wearing a fresh hat every day (I commute to work) keeps my helmet from
getting the "perma stink."
In the winter I have earflap hats: (RockBros -Amazon), one from Walz,
Patagonia, etc. Mostly I wear thin wool beanies.

Saddest hat story? I sometimes buy them from Rothera (sadly it looks like
they are no longer around). They're pricey, but often have cool fabric. I
wore my new Seinfeld - Kramer hat to work, promptly dropped it on the way
in the front door. It was never recovered. One ride!

Re: [RBW] Re: Asking for your opinion on locking up a Riv

2024-09-30 Thread Tom Wyland
I lock my Platypus at my office in the parking garage. My office is in a
suburban area and I use one heavy u-lock and no QR locks (although I like
this idea a lot). I also ride my Riv in the rain. My office is moving to a
more theft-prone area next year, but they do have lockers there I can
hopefully squeeze my bike into. My high-security setup would be one u-lock
and one heavy chain lock.

One thing to consider is how others lock their bikes in the same area. In
Montreal all the bikes have mid-range or better u-locks. Where my son goes
to school everyone uses cable locks or no lock.

[RBW] Re: Replacement tires for Soma Shikoro 42 x 622mm (700 x 42) cream sidewalls

2024-08-23 Thread Tom Wyland
I'm sure I won't be the only one to recommend Rene Herse tires. I have some
regret getting the standard casing, as I had more than a couple of flats on
my suburban commute. Glass that any Schwalbe tire would shrug off just
works it's way in there. The same with small wires. I run tubes.

[RBW] ISO: A long rear rack

2024-02-07 Thread Tom Wyland
I picked up a cool Dutch twin panniers in Amsterdam for my Platy. I'm
putting the large saddlesack and R14 rack on the shelf a bit.
The double panniers looked so tiny on the big city bikes, but I can't find
a bike rack in the US that has a platform 400mm (15.75 inches) long.
Does anyone have a rear rack laying around that has a platform larger than
15 inches?

[RBW] Re: Knobby tires and fenders

2024-01-30 Thread Tom Wyland
I'm not sure if this answers the question but perhaps it will help. I run
63mm VO Fluted fenders on my Platypus. The stated max tire size is 48mm
with fenders. I have the smooth RH Hatcher Pass (48mm) on Velocity Dyads
(so they measure closer to 45mm but greater diameter). I switched to knobby
Oracle Ridge tires of the same size, and my fenders rubbed on my rear light
mounting bolt (inside the fender). So they do require greater clearance for
the tire only. I just had to make a very slight rear stay adjustment (2mm)
to keep the tires from rubbing.

In general though I prefer at least 10mm of clearance for non-knobby tires.
I mostly just do the fender width minus the stated tire width instead of
dealing with measuring the gaps everywhere. So 63mm-48mm is 15mm of stated
clearance.

My Platy with Bosco bars, Nitto R-14, large Saddlesack, tool kit, Dyad
wheels, frame pump, dynamo lighting, etc weighs about the same as Kim's
naked Clem. So from a weight perspective it's more about the "build and
bags" than the frame, in reality.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clean, don't toss, your dull German mirror

2023-12-12 Thread Tom Wyland
Funny story... I had a German mirror and it was all scratched. Then I lost
one of the mounting bolts. So I bought a new German mirror, had it on the
bike a year, then had a small crash on some acorns. The only thing broken
was the mirror housing. It turns out I had kept the broken mirror and was
able to assemble everything into a new working mirror. So, the moral of
the story is NEVER THROW ANYTHING OUT. Kidding. Kind of.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone else tried the new Riv seat?

2023-12-05 Thread Tom Wyland
I have it on my Platy currently. It replaced a Selle Anatomica H2 (at least
for the winter). The SA was a tad too narrow since I swapped to slighly
more upright bars. I haven't yet decided if the Riv saddle is too wide (by
1-2cm). I don't really care for the wide nose of the Riv saddle, but I
suppose I'll get used to it. I do like the flat shape and the amount of
padding (minimal). It's good for a more upright ride due to the width. I
may use it on my wife's bike to swap out the Bontrager commuter saddle
(wide). When viewed from the side, the Bontrager commuter saddle has
shoulders that slope down where the Riv saddle is a flat profile. We both
prefer saddles that have a flat profile. I've also ridden a VO wide
touring saddle and the Riv saddle is wider both in the nose and the rear.

[RBW] Re: Expert level bike commuting strategies?

2023-10-31 Thread Tom Wyland
I've been commuting for 13 years. My current commute is suburban, about 6
miles each way. Lots of great advice here and as expected I learned
something new (sealant in tubes! sign me up!)
I would try new things to constantly improve your commute (equipment,
route, clothes)

   - Try changing up luggage, cockpit (handlebar, grips, stems), tires, etc
   - Dynamo lights are awesome and help with safety during the day
   - I'm prepared, but I don't change my schedule for a weather *forecast*
   - I leave clothes and another computer at work to avoid lugging them
every day. I shower before I leave.
   - Choose different routes to avoid left hooks/cross traffic, etc. It's
worth making your trip longer sometimes.
   - I got an ebike and take that on some days when I'm really unmotivated
   or it's hot/windy, etc.
   - The time difference between really pushing myself and just pleasantly
cruising is like 5-7 minutes, tops.

Thanks,
Tom

I've only worked with SKS fenders before and these VO fenders were easier

Re: [RBW] Re: What shoes does your Riv wear?

2023-10-03 Thread Tom Wyland
OK, somebody made the point about my Rene Herse 700x48s probably measuring
small. Yes, they are more like 44mm wide on my Velocity Dyads. For me the
fenders always limit the tire size. I ran 42mm tires max under my 50mm SKS
fenders. I just installed 63mm VO venders on my Platy and realized I
fitted them for 44mm tires (because I thought they were 48s!). The state
max spec is 48mm tires with fenders for the Platy. I see that others have
fitted 50mm tires under the VO fluted fenders. I guess I'll push my luck
with a larger size (Gravel Kings?) when I wear out this RH set. Hopefully
I didn't cut down my fender stays too short.

Re: [RBW] What shoes does your Riv wear?

2023-10-02 Thread Tom Wyland
I've just switched out my Specialized Sawtooth 700x44 with Rene Herse
700x48 Hatcher Pass tires (standard casing). Both are folding bead tires
with supple sidewalls. I enjoy the extra width of the Hatcher Pass but I'm
not convinced that they are worth twice the price yet (actually I got the
Specialized tires for like $18/each). I'll see how they fare on my
suburban commute in the coming months. I suspect I'll have more flats but
I'll be sure to report back here.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Campee 27F rack vs rack combos

2023-08-15 Thread Tom Wyland
Tubus Tara work well with ortlieb panniers that have stiff backs and a
slide-in plastic hook on the back. The angled pannier mounts with support
bars all around would should work better with floppier panniers or those
with simple bungee hooks. The tubus don't always sit level with the Riv
forks. You may need to flip the top rail upside-down.

The Velo Orange Campeur Front Rack is similar to the 27F with angled
carriers, but they don't come off. The VO rack has better system for
mounting a Rando bag, IMO.

Yes, thanks everyone. I'll give the "high end" RH tires a try this go
around. I'm a fan of Schwalbe so those will likely be my second go-round.
I've tried Big Bens and Schwalbe Marathon HS in the past as well. I'm not
sure I'm sold on *suppleness *yet. The good news is the Platy already soaks
up lots of road vibration.

I just did this entire exercise in my head this week: * Need 1 new 42mm

[RBW] 48mm tire choice?

2023-03-07 Thread Tom Wyland
Hi, can anyone recommend tires for 90% pavement that are 700x48 for my
Platy? I've gone the cheap route with the Specialized Sawtooth but now I'm
ready for something better. They have to be tough enough to commute on the

The only tire I can seem to find is the Shikoro. I remember reading some
mixed reviews but I couldn't find anything recent here.

[RBW] Re: Betty Foy Sizing & Search

2022-10-25 Thread Tom Wyland
I would recommend a Handsome Devil step-through aka She Devil. It's going
to have a little more lively steering than a Riv due to lower trail. The
frame itself is also not as nice and a little heavier than a Riv
Platy/Betty, but it still has very clean welds. No lugs. You could also
build it with a IGH rear hub because it has semi-horizontal rear dropouts
to tension the chain. The folks at Handsome are good people to work with.
The Devil was originally a nod to Bridgestone bikes.

I had a Handsome Devil for years all decked out in Riv Style before I got
my Platy.

Re: [RBW] Your preferred non-leather saddle

2022-09-23 Thread Tom Wyland
I agree with Ben -- most saddles are arc-shaped and I like flat saddles. I
really liked my Velo Orange wide touring saddle. It's firm but not too firm
and has a rubbery texture. Bag loops are a plus. I find this saddle to be
not breathable enough for me (I don't wear bike shorts). My current saddle
is a Selle Anatomica H2.

Re: [RBW] High bars at a club ride

2022-07-27 Thread Tom Wyland
OK, I used to be all against the idea of riding in circles for sport. I'm
all about riding to get somewhere or do something, not just riding loops.
Then Covid lockdown hit and I didn't bike to work, there was nothing open,
and I didn't want to be exercising my lungs in the grocery store after
riding there. So I found myself riding in circles. So I guess it's not
that dumb after all. I just wish people would take a relaxing ride once and
a while instead of sprinting everywhere.

I'm 100% with the comment from Max S on Chilling/Cruising/Jamming
positions. All bars should have them.

Re: [RBW] Searching for bike akin to Quickbeam

2022-06-14 Thread Tom Wyland
Handsome Devil. It has a nice fork crown. The rest of the bike isn't
lugged but the welds are super smooth. The higher bottom bracket would be
helpful if you ran fixed gear. The tubing is way more stout than your
typical 80s Japanese bike though.

For new, the Surly Cross Check is probably the closest competitor, but
it's up to $700 for the frameset now, or $950 complete.

The BMC Monstercross is like a CC with 0.1mm thinner tubing and worse
cable routing. It's a few hundred more for the frameset.

I've had both of these frame, and a QB, and put some comparison
 thoughts here:

 https://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2019/05/rivendell-quickbeam-vs-surly-cross.html

I may try a Handsome Devil next. Almost down to your price range ($550
or so), with a bit quicker handling than anything listed above.

I've looked at a couple of used Le Tours, but the top tubes seemed very
short on these. Maybe 57cm for a 25" frame? Anyway, something to check.

[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Tom Wyland
I have a generic (eBay direct ship from China) stem adaptor and VO stem on
my Platy. It was intended to be temporary as others noted you can easily
swap out inexpensive stems to find the right length. I'm not happy with
the way the stem adaptor flexes. I also don't care for the look of the fat
stem on top of the skinny adaptor. I'm switching to a VO quill faceplate
stem shortly (delivery today!). I'll let you know how that works out.

You don't dent the fenders, you just trim them with a knife or tin snips.

[RBW] Re: I'm a New Bike Commuter

2022-02-04 Thread Tom Wyland
In my years of commuting I've used:
1) Milk Crate
2) Wald Basket
3) Panniers
4) Saddle Bag (Riv Large Saddle Sack)

I have one of those cheap packable backpacks

that folds up into its own pocket. I use it for my work stuff and slide it
*inside
*the pannier, basket or saddle bag. That helps me keep my stuff more
organized. I also sling it on my back when I'm locking up my bike, etc. . I
borrowed the idea from a friend, so I can't take credit. If you use a
basket I recommend a foam pad for the bottom, though.
For short trips my preference would be a basket. It stays on the bike, is
transparent to the wind when empty, and keeps my stuff in view.

Re: [RBW] Perfect high-tech dirt road riding shoes

2021-08-25 Thread Tom Wyland
I bought a pair of Merrell Trail Glove minimalist trail running shoes to
try with my bike (has bmx pedals). They are super light and have a "rock
plate" in the sole that makes it stiff over the arch of the foot. It
basically makes it better for supporting your foot on flat pedals.
Typically these types of "barefoot" shoes have super-flexible soles that
would not do a good job supporting your foot on the pedals. I guess the
'trail" designation means they have a stiffer sole. I was really surprised
at how well they worked versus Keens or regular running shoes. Your
results may vary, but if you see them on sale and they fit, give them a try.

mounts, though. Has anyone tried it?
https://velo-orange.com/products/flat-pack-randonneur-rack

The Surly 8-pack rack would likely work. I emailed them and they confirmed
that it would fit the Platypus fork (same as Appaloosa?). It's NOT much of
a looker, though

[RBW] Re: Cycling apps for Apple Watch

2021-06-30 Thread Tom Wyland
Strava. Just tracking commutes and joining local challenges (like Freezing
Saddles, etc). The watch app can independently track your ride then sync
with the phone later, if you prefer that route.

Be prepared for Strava to encourage you to be "the fastest" and refer to
you as an "athlete" constantly. Super annoying.

Re: [RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2021-06-16 Thread Tom Wyland
If I was Riv President for a day, I would ponder if adding a lower-cost
all-rounder bike would cut into sales of the other models. Clem and
Roadini (tigged lower-cost frames) are on the rough terrain and road ends
of the spectrum. The premium equivalents are the Hillibikes and AHH. All
of the bikes in the all-rounder territory are the premium type, and there
are quite a few models that functionally overlap (Platy, Sam, Atlantis, Joe
Appa). Adding a lower-cost alternative for the already overlapping premium
models would just cut into the sales of those without further
differentiation.

I would partner with a brand that made lower-cost frames and offer those
without Riv branding. Then capture all of those other brand's customers
and offer them to ladder up to a Rivendell. Basically use the lower cost
brand as a channel to sell the more premium Rivs. And you wouldn't dilute
your brand with a lower-priced model with little differentiation.
Companies like Handsome or Soma might make sense.

The good news is 1) I'm not Riv President for a Day and 2) due to the
current bike boom they'll sell whatever bikes they ordered in an hour.
Boom.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-06-09 Thread Tom Wyland
I've added my fenders (SKS P50), dynamo lights and front derailleur (Campy
from Joe!) to my Platy. I've gotten lots of insights from this group! My
wife and I took a little ride through local trails on Sunday, dodging
cicadas. Some dirt farm paths and a few stream crossings (even a tunnel).
Not bad for the DC suburbs. The Platy is pretty amazing. The fork (and
quill stem) are much more compliant than any other bike I've ridden. I see
why Grant has kept away from disk brakes. You'd never get that feel with a
beefed-up thru-axle fork and disk brakes.

[RBW] WTB: O shifter mount

2021-06-02 Thread Tom Wyland
OK, the good news is that I purchased a new O Silver 2 shifter and mount
from eBay a week before they restocked then sold out. The bad news is that
the seller sent me an O shifter with an X mount. The message from the
seller was a shrug and a "that's what Rivendell sent me." So I have an
extra X mount to trade if you need it. If you bought a shifter set from
Rivendell, maybe double check that you have a matching mount.

I really do like the inside mounting technique for these shifters. They're
easy to use and work well with pogies in the winter.

front (sometimes with shopsack)
R-14 with no bag, Ruthworks Saddle wedge, rando rack + VO rando bag on
front
Ruthworks Saddle wedge, rando rack + VO rando bag on front
Same as above with a Tubus Tara and small panniers when needed

Drop bar:
Minnehaha medium black canvas saddle bag in back

The Platypus so far has the R14 + Large Saddlesack only right now. I may
add a VO flatpack rack on the front and swap the R14 for VO Campeur on the
back (anyone selling either?)

I had a Clem-like Dutch bike for many years with a frame lock. I used it
all of the time to lock up in front of a store for a few minutes. It's

I had a cable lock that plugged in as well. I still used another U-lock

Mike M: Just turn on closed captions for English-ish translation.

For what's it worth I had a dream last night that I went to Rivendell and
the Platypus frames all showed up defective. They tried to sell me a
fat-tired folding E-bike. Terrifying stuff.

I would have plunked down a deposit last fall for one of these, but if I’m

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul Racers on a Cheviot?

2021-02-10 Thread Tom Wyland
Ive seen this done with other Cheviots as well. You can put that cable
stop much closer to the seat tube, though. I guess with the guides on the
bottom of the top tube you'll need to put on a dia-comp housing holder or
something similar to run it along the top.

I noticed on Will's Staff Bikes page that he has a Paul Racer on this

Has anyone else used this set up? Do Paul Racers have clearance for

running a fender too so it seems like there would be plenty of room.
 Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-02-10 Thread Tom Wyland
Good for you, Leah! I serviced my first headset and bottom bracket last
fall. It felt good.
I have a fender-mounted taillight but always wound the wire under the
bottom bracket, out the non-driveside chainstay and out the fender
support. Aesthetics aside, I never understood the under-fender approach.
It seems like it it would leave the wire open to damage by rocks or ice
chunks getting kicked up under the fender. I guess that's not too
different from under-bottom bracket damage potential.

[RBW] Anyone have toe overlap issues?

2021-02-03 Thread Tom Wyland
According to BikeInsights the tire-to-pedal-spindle on my current bike is
about 10cm. I sometimes hit my toe on my (sks) fender at low speeds. It's
not terrible but I wouldn't want any less room. I noticed that the Sam has
like 2 cm less toe overlap than my current bike. This is one reason I
gravitated towards the Cheviot and Platypus where the front-center is
longer (just a guess on the Platypus).
Does anyone else have toe overlap issues? Is it just my size 13 feet that
are the issue?

I agree the bike should be fine with those dimples. Long term, if the

an issue. But even without attention, should last till most of us are no

Re: [RBW] Re: Is there a Riv-like three speed currently in production?

2020-12-22 Thread Tom Wyland
Linda,

I took some quick photos
of

my semi-clean bike's welds. It's a 2014 Devil. The powder coat is tough
and there was frame saver already applied when I got my complete 8-speed
back then. I've changed out many of the parts with the exception of the
bottom bracket, headset, crankset and derailleur. I can fit bike tires
(38mm with fenders and 47 without on the diamond frame), but it lacks a
kickstand plate. The fork has mid-fork mounts but lacks a second set of
eyelets at the front dropouts. The tubing is (double-butted 4120)
somewhere between a touring bike and something like a surly cross check.

The site says the fabric is NOT pre-shrunk. Buy the size you normally
wear, wash it, and it should fit like normal after first wash and dry.

[RBW] Platypus 2021 Nooooo

I saw that the delivery timeframe was updated to 2021. The good news is
that I bought my Silver crankset before the Sams dropped. Now they are sold
out. The bad news is that I won’t be building a Platypus until next year.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Tom Wyland
Well, all my bikes have fenders and I've found there is nothing more
annoying than a fender that rubs the tire when you go over bumps, etc. I
always size them 10mm wider than the tire. So a 43mm tire isn't going to
work very well with 45mm fenders unless the tires inflate to much smaller
than the stated width.

I'm having similar mental gymnastics, but not around fenders. I'm thinking
about a crankset for my Platypus. I guess you can't go wrong with the
Rivendell Silver, but I'm looking for a vintage triple I can put a bash
guard onto, maybe?

Are there rack mounts on the top of the fork crown? It looks like there's

[RBW] WTB: Tall Quill to 1 1/8 Adaptor in Silver

2020-09-28 Thread Tom Wyland
Hi, I'm looking for the tall (220mm+) version of the quill to threadless
adaptor. Will the COVID bike boom they seem to be out of stock everywhere.
There are plenty of the 80-110mm ones. Silver is preferred.

If you have a tall quill stem that's 80mm or less reach that might work as
well. 25.4 clamp size

Why am I not buying a new Nitto stem? It's for a project and I'm not I
want to stick with the 25.4 handlebars that are currently on the bike.

long distances, though.

I thought they looked great, but were too hard for my "soft computer
