Yeah. And you might even know the guy that runs it.

Actually I’m lookin' for a little favor. For him...not for me. But if you
can get him a ticket, like to Australia...you know what I mean. You wanna
help him get down there?"

(I won't give away any spoilers, but "a ticket to Australia" does not refer
to an airline ticket in this context. Could "pork store" be a kind of mob
slang for "a shop that sells non-racing bicycles?")

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Trenker

I think some of you are missing the main point.

The extra-long chainstay is kind of like the foot-long hot dog.

Now let’s say you’ve got a big strong man, maybe he’s been on a diet and
he’s kind of angry because of that; to him, the foot-long hot dog makes
perfect sense. Just like it makes sense to have extra-long chainstays for
taller riders, so all of their weight isn’t over that back wheel.

Then imagine you’ve got a little kid, and you take him to the fair. He sees
the foot-long hot dog, and he wants it. He doesn’t need a foot-long hot
dog, but it’s kind of cute if he gets it, maybe he doesn’t even eat the
whole thing and a seagull gets part of it. No harm done, Jimmy got what he
wanted and had a nice day at the fair, maybe he’ll remember it all his
life.

I don’t know if the inventor of the foot-long hot dog became rich or
famous; but his/her invention did, and maybe a hundred years from now the
extra-long chainstay will enjoy the same acclaim. You could call it moving
the rear wheel back, or if you want to be more positive, you could call it
moving the rest of the bike forward.

On the other hand, you have to wonder why they didn’t go with extra-long
seatstays instead…

you are really thirsty would be.

Even something like an apple picked from a tree, or a bowl of corn flakes
sprinkled with white sugar (do you like to put the sugar on before, or
after the milk? Quiet!) , a slice of blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream,
a boiled potato with a little salt and butter, a freshly made crepe with
whipped cream in France, a heaping plate of fragrant basmati rice—and let’s
not even mention a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day.

.

Steamed carrots, again with butter, roasted sweet potato, fried plantains,
chewing on a stalk of sugar cane that you chopped down with a machete, a
pastry in a café in Vienna, chicken paprikash, chocolate birthday cake with
icing, I almost forgot a juicy ripe peach at that special time of year, a
toasted tomato sandwich with salt and pepper and mayonnaise…

Thanks, both of those look interesting.

I could use a Marathon Supreme 50 as well. It would be fine, however

it's nice to have a margin of safety.

Incidentally I have to wonder about some kind of conflicted feelings of the
Maxxis guy who comes up with names for their tires. “Torch” conveys to me
something combustible that burns up fast. Another one of my favourite
strange Maxxis names is “Detonator:” not sure that is the image I want to
be rolling along on. :-)

[RBW] 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-25 Thread Trenker

What is available in tires 700 x 45-50 for commuting and touring? For an
Atlantis on synergy rims. I have used Marathon Supremes in 700 x 40. They
are really nice tires and I have toured with them. Most of the paved and
unpaved roads in my area are fine with these, but some newly laid gravel
can need a wider tire.

I have Compass 700x44 and they are very light tires. For touring they’d be
all right because even if I get a flat every couple of days it doesn’t
matter, since I stop to rest anyway. But they are hardly bigger than the
Compass 700x38, they measure about 40-42 mm on my rims. For combined
touring and commuting I want something a bit sturdier than the Compass and
a bit lighter construction than the Marathon Supreme, at least 45 mm wide. I
want to make good use of the clearance on the Atlantis.

2016-10-29 Thread Trenker
" Is there such a thing as the "best bar"? "

" *the "best" is whatever works for you, the rider."*

I agree with this sentiment. How can a handlebar on its own be
"comfortable", or not comfortable? It is a non-moving piece of metal.

It depends on your setup and how your bike fits, on how you ride, the
cadence you pedal, the route you are riding, and even your fitness and
skill on the bike.

For an individual it can be more measurable than "personal preference," for
example if you find a bar that results in less hand pain and less
numbness...but I think it is almost meaningless to state that a given
handlebar is "comfortable" in and of itself.

Another compliment came from a group of university lads in a car ( they

[RBW] Ride Report: The Abandoned Lake Shore Line

2016-09-01 Thread Trenker

The first picture doesn’t show that behind me is a 200-foot sandy cliff. I
had been having a nice time in SWO, did some fishing in the Nith river and
was in the middle of a morning ride along Lake Erie when I came to a
barrier with a sign, “Road Closed”, and a path beyond it that looked like
an opportunity to follow what had once been a road. I couldn’t tell how
long it had been abandoned. At first the going was pleasant, riding on a
faint path through knee-high weeds, here and there signs saying danger,
etc. then I came to the reason the highway had been abandoned: a huge
desolation where the lakeside had caved in, no way to go down the cliff, so
I had to follow the desecration around the edge of the cliff and hope that
there was some passable trail on the other side, or go back and retrace my
steps. I chose to push on, and soon found myself in a jungle of chest-high
vines. I had to carry the bike on my shoulder, at one point I realized I
was crossing a split-rail fence which was somewhere beneath my feet while I
waded through the vines, sometimes coming to a complete stop and having to
disentangle myself. I emerged at the edge of a cornfield, which I could
follow where it skirted close to the edge of the cliff. The corn was over
my head, providing a nice cover for my passage, and there were some jimson
weeds growing at the edge. When I got to the far side of the defile I had
to pass through the jungle again, at one point my bike was secured fast and
I toppled forward but ended up suspended a few feet above the ground. My
chain was caught in an ancient branch. I managed to free it with no damage
except for a snapped zip tie on the front basket. I made it through the
jungle and then had to walk between an impenetrable forest and a tobacco
field, finally coming out in the ludicrous situation of walking down a
farmer’s driveway which had a gate at the end that I had to lift the bike
over, and a sign that said “no trespassing” pointing the opposite way from
which I had come.

I had made it back to the road, and soon found a beautiful secluded beach
where I could strip down and have a swim, however it could have been easily
reached by the usual road without the jungle exertions, a road that also
featured a campground with a sign that said “bikers welcome” which did not
mean bicyclists. Through this exploration the Atlantis comported itself
admirably, although I had been carrying it much of the way, in other words
it had been riding me instead of me riding it. For the second half of the
day I made my way slowly back to my home, one of those marches where you go
slower and slower and take more and more breaks as you near your
destination, but there were definite periods of fun and enjoyment as well.

[RBW] Re: Toyo Atlantis Shimmy ???

2016-08-23 Thread Trenker

Last summer I was on a short bike trip thinking to myself, during that time
on the bike when you have lots of time to think, that I have never been
bothered by shimmy on any bike that I could remember. The same morning I
kept hearing a knocking sound while pedaling or gliding at low speed, which
went away when I put both hands lightly on the handlebar. I gradually
figured out it was the fender knocking against the tire, and I realized
that I had always experienced shimmy, but never realized it or been
bothered much by it. This is on a 66 cm Toyo Atlantis with rear panniers
and a front basket. The same morning I was having the prolonged impression
of how much I liked this bike for touring.

During that trip I had enough time to experiment and ponder the shimmy, and
I realized that it only happened at low speed, and that at higher speeds,
eg. descending on asphalt or gravel, the bike was rock solid. Which is a
nice concession.

I think shimmy can be finely tuned in or out of a bike. Going to a slightly
narrower tire can improve things, as can pumping up the front tire to the
same adequate pressure as the back; it isn’t written in stone that the
front tire has to be at a lower pressure.

Even the road surface can affect or initiate shimmy: it looks flat but
there are subtle undulations caused by car tires; they are a lot more
obvious on gravel roads, before or after intersections.

If you are tweaking your setup to reduce shimmy, you can test it at home by
standing beside the bike and rapping the side of the handlebar with the
heel of your hand: you will be able to see if the vibrations focus on the
front end ( shimmy ) or condense around the back end of the bike ( ideal,
which I now have with a small basket on front and saddlebag tied to a small
home-made rear rack.) Tomorrow morning I head out on another short trip and
I’ll have plenty of time to see how I like this setup.

I suspect that tall riders on big bikes probably always experience a
certain amount of shimmy, as well as a certain amount of frame flex, but we
are used to it and don’t know any different. I wonder what size your
Atlantis is?

Re: [RBW] Re: Remember Islabikes?

2016-05-28 Thread Trenker

I think that Skenry makes some valid points. If the idea is to “just ride,”
then who cares what kind of bike someone else chooses?

Rivendells are really nice bikes. They are sturdy and good-looking and made
to last. They are also expensive. I think when you buy something expensive
there is a tendency to give it great reviews because it cost so much; for
example, I got a pair of expensive shoes for weddings/funerals, and I felt
great when I wore them. They even seemed to fit extremely well. But the
cost of a shoe doesn’t have anything to do with how well it fits. I think
when someone talks about “the ride” of a Rivendell they are showing some
consumerism and elitism because the ride of a bike depends mainly on the
tires and the fit of the bike.

Re. a kid’s bike by Rivendell: There was an aborted attempt at one once,
and it was going to be called Rosco Bubbe. Or maybe it was Bosco Rubbe at
the time. It would have been a nice bike, but I don’t think kids need an
expensive bike, and I don’t think most kids are going to ride a bike with a
semi-ironic name like Roscoe Bubbe. Kids are very attuned to what their
peers are using and they like bikes that are sporty and give an impression
of speed. A great bike for kids is the bmx bike, they are still popular and
are generally fun to ride, simple and durable.

Re: [RBW] Re: Back to the Drawing Board for Kid Bike

2016-01-06 Thread Trenker

There may be nothing wrong with the bike. I noticed with my kids when they
learned to ride a bike, they had a certain pattern of pedaling that they
preferred: to stand up and pedal for a number of strokes, then to sit and
coast briefly, then to stand and pedal again. It may have something to do
with the bike being a significant fraction of the weight of a small child,
and the power produced by their little legs being very limited. It's like
one of us having to pedal a hundred-pound bike. I think this may be just a
natural way for small children to ride a bike.

And I recall my son never changed gears either, and he never wanted his
saddle raised to the "proper" height we would use as adults.

If he's having fun, maybe just let him do what feels natural? :-)

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam's Pedigree...

2014-06-02 Thread Trenker

I have a 66 cm Quickbeam and a 66 cm Atlantis. I would agree with Mr.
Powers that the Quickbeam is not a lightweight tubeset.

Rivendell advertised the Simpleone as having 0.9/0.6/0.9 tubing all around,
and I would be surprised if the Quickbeam is any lighter.

The main difference I can detect between the Quickbeam and Atlantis is that
the Quickbeam has a longer top tube. So you could call it kind of a
single-speed touring bike. But it’s designed to be that way, let’s face it,
Rivendells are strong bikes made to be ridden on rough surfaces, often by
heavy riders.

I’ve had mine since 2009 and I ride it a lot, I can’t say I’d change
anything about it.

To me there are a few questions:

Is a more flexible frame easier to pedal, and more efficient over long
distances? I believe it is possible to feel the difference, but I am not
sure anyone has proven which takes less energy to pedal.

Is a stiffer frame with heavier tubing less likely to break? You would
think so, but frames seem to break at certain spots, so you could ask if
the top tube, for example, really needs to be that heavy. And is it
actually better to have some flex built in at certain points to take stress
off other parts of the frame?

There are a lot of things to ponder while just riding. :-)
