Re: [RBW] Re: How upright can you get with Alba's/stem combo?

2013-05-10 Thread VeloZen
Uh oh ... here we go again. :)

What isn't a "good" idea for some ... perhaps many ... maybe even the
overwhelming majority of active cyclists in this world ... may just be the
only way one single individual is capable of getting out and enjoying a
ride without pain. I know people with nice bikes who love riding, but due
to injury, cannot ride while leaning forward even a little. A very upright
riding posture may not be the best way to go fast ... and it may not be the
best way to achieve an efficient and powerful position ... but it may be
the only way to enjoy riding ... for some.

Perhaps before we start judging whether something is a good or bad idea, we
might simply and politely answer the question asked by the person posting
... and THEN if there's a question that might be important in return,
politely ask them why they might want to do something that's outside the
normal use. THEN ... if you have advice to offer that may be helpful
within THEIR context, politely do so. BUT ... also accept that what YOU
think is right or wrong ... good or bad ... may not apply to everyone (or
anyone) else.

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-08 Thread VeloZen
I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, as well as the right to
express it in a peaceful fashion. But I can't help asking ... why would
someone who so blatantly feels all Rivendell frames are designed wrong
spend so much time hanging out and chatting with the RBW Owner's Bunch? I
just can't imagine wanting to involve myself in discussion group where the
focal point is something I totally disagree with ... unless, of course, I'm
simply looking for an argument.

[RBW] Re: Which bike next....?

2012-09-23 Thread VeloZen

The Surly LHT is certainly a capable machine, no question there. HOWEVER
... and this is a big HOWEVER ... they have the same problem as virtually
every other mass-production model. The geometry changes with size range ...
far too much, in my opinion. The 46cm frame has a 74.5 degree seat tube
angle! That's insane for a touring bike that's supposed to be comfortable.
In contrast, the 48cm Riv Hunqapillar has a 71.5 degree seat tube angle ...
which only changes to 72 degrees in larger frames, maintaining a more
consistent geometry for all sizes. Of course, this really only affects
smaller Surly frames ... regular-sized folks don't really have to worry,
but for us small dudes, it's quite frustrating ... but yet another reason
to appreciate Riv design. I happen to have one of each ( a 46cm LHT and a
48cm Hunq), and there is an enormous difference in how they feel. I don't
ride the LHT much these days ... anyone need a smaller touring bike?

[RBW] Re: Super geeky tire Q...

2012-07-31 Thread VeloZen
Hey Andy ... I have the 26x2 Supremes on my LHT and the same size Duremes
on my Hunqapllar. Both tires are really good, by which I mean they roll
well and provide an abundance of "float"-ation. I've had the Supremes for
over two years with only one flat that's still a mystery (flat the day
after the ride with no indication of the cause anywhere). I've had the
Duremes for 8 months now, no flats or issues of ay kind. Although I like
both tires, my personal preference is for the Dureme. Both are great on
pavement, with great grip on either dry or wet surfaces, but the Dureme
is a lot more versatile on the trails or sandy areas, where it slides less
and has better bite. The Supreme also makes an odd noise on smooth roads
... a medium-pitched hum ... but not annoying enough to worry about. To
me and my rather unhurried approach to riding, they both roll equally
smooth and fast, and feel about the same. Just better dirt/trail
performance from the Dureme.

I've posted a review here for the Dureme, which has some comparison, as
well as a link to a previous Sumpreme review : *
http://velozen.blogspot.com/2012/02/review-schwalbe-marathon-dureme-tires.html
*

Hope it helps ... I'm pretty confident in Schwalbe at this point, and
unlikely to buy a different brand when these tires wear out. They do wear
out eventually, don't they? I'm starting to wonder ...

Scott
