Thanks for your suggestion! I started looking into the Singular Gryphon.
That bike might be a little bit more what I'm looking for (less touring,
more adventure day riding). I saw that it is sold out on their website,
where can one get a hold of a size large of one of those?

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar (or other riv) as a dirt drop mountain bike?

2015-10-13 Thread brianweee
Thanks everybody for their input & posting pictures of their awesome drop
bar mountain bikes. All are very dreamy. :D

@bill, the Black Mountain Monstercross seems to only clear 42mm. I want fat
fat 2.3" tires.

@eric, thanks for the link. I haven't heard too much about the Carmague. It
looks rad, just have had some less than optimal experiences with VO parts.
No experience with frames though.

@mark, that Atlantis looks SO amazing with the fat tires. The long geometry
is an interesting point though. The chainstays look as tight as possible?
and the top tube seems any shorter would run into even more toe overlap. I
wonder if a tighter geometry could be obtained with smaller wheel size.

Getting the right bar height definitely seems to be an important factor.

A Rawland Drakkar also seems to potentially fit the bill. Also Jason's
baller Ellis is so dreamy!

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar (or other riv) as a dirt drop mountain bike?

2015-10-13 Thread brianweee
@clayton So true. I'm not sure what my main draw is to the drop bars. I
think getting low enough on the road, and on climbs is the main reason. On
my full suspension mtb, it's all about downhill. I think I like the idea of
my a drop bar mountain bike that is made for climbing, road descending, and
less optimized for gnarly descents? 50-70 mile rides with 30-40 miles of
dirt/singletrack with 5-7k climbing is what i'm trying to optimize for.

[RBW] Hunqapillar (or other riv) as a dirt drop mountain bike?

2015-10-12 Thread brianweee

Is anyone using their Rivendell Hunqapillar as a dirt drop mountain bike?
or monster cross bike style? I currently ride a 26" wheel-size, 55.5cm
Elephant with pretty light weight tubing. It's been great, but it's a
little small for me and I think I would prefer a larger wheel diameter.

I'm thinking a Rivendell Hunqapillar with drops for my next build, but
would love to hear people's thoughts

   - is a Rivendell Hunqapillar the right frame for this build? Other
   suggestions?
   - what tires can the Hunqapillar really clear? 2.35" Racing Ralphs? (i
saw a slick 2.5" front tire at the Riv store)
   - what bars are you using/would you use?

Inspirations:
Allan's Hunqapillar on Prolly

Cunningham

Mark Reimer's Atlantis

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-09 Thread brianweee

Does anyone know what the difference in tube specs are for the Atlantis &
Hunqapillar? or weight differences?

I'd be curious how different of a frame they are from that stand point.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunq - what's the real difference?

2015-02-24 Thread brianweee
From looking at the geo charts it looks like the Hunqapillar is built with
more off road downhill capabilities. With 3-4cm longer in the top tubes,
slacker HT angle, 1-2 cm longer chain stays, it will have a longer wheel
base and feel more stable in downhill descents.

On Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 1:50:21 PM UTC-8, Mark Reimer wrote:

I've had my Atlantis for about half a year now and am loving it. I usually
run it with 2.1 WTB Nano's, and feel like I could probably get 2.2's in
there actually. Most of the riding I've been doing is on trails, back
roads, across fields, over the snow, etc. AKA, not pavement. I don't have
any complaints save one - I tend to hit the pedals on the ground somewhat
often when I get into bumpy, rocky, or off-camber territory. Not a huge
deal, some strategic pedalling takes care of that. However, a few times
I've pondered if I'd be better of with a Hunq. But after looking at the geo
charts, it looks like the BB-drop is actually identical. Quite a bit of the
geo is similar actually. So it makes me wonder, what's really the
 difference between them?

I know the tire clearance has changed over time. Some maxed out at 2.1 I
think. Newer Hunq's can handle 2.3's if I'm not mistaken. If we ignore the
tire clearance for the moment, is there something I'm missing? Would an
Atlantis with Bullmoose bars = Hunq and a Hunq with Noodles = Atlantis?

This is mostly out of curiosity. I'm over the moon with my Atlantis and
don't hesitate to load it down and take it over the roughest terrain. The
frame is so heavy duty I can't imagine it being incapable of handling
 anything the Hunq could.

Manny! Glad that you made it out from the East Bay! It was indeed fun. As
for the Spam Masubi idea, I have to give some credit to Alice Stribling who
commented on my instagram to bring Spam Masubi on a bike

Any case, I'm glad we made it to the top with hot dogs and all.

As for Manny tumbling, Nathan managed to grab a sweet
pic: http://instagram.com/p/ViAfvzt-M-/ It really was a great moment.
Carlin was mimicking some slide guitar noises in the background (as it felt
like we were watching a Riv video) as Manny was bombing down that single
track and went into the most graceful tumble!

Can't wait for you to host your East Bay adventure. Where when will you

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Garage Sale - what'd you get?

2012-11-20 Thread brianweee
Oh man, I had so much fun at the RBW garage sale. I didn't score anything
big, just a lot of little things...

I got a rain bag cover for my acorn box bag $5, wool arm/leg warmers $20
total, a 650b front wheel (Twin Hollow to Deore Hub) for $20, another
unknown rim to deore rear wheel w/ 9 speed cassette $20, 2 Jack Brown Blues
for $5!!!, free fatty pumpkin tires, Drive side sugino xd-2 Crankset w/
rings for $30...

Overall, I think my best deals were 650b front wheel $20 and 2 new-ish
condition Jack Browns for $5. :)

My coolest thing, was surprisingly the rain bag cover for my Acorn bag.
It's perfect for randonneuring!

Major props to Rivendell folks for being so cool even when it was chaotic.

My best score was a bunch of MUSA knickers. One pair for $20, and 3 pairs
for $5 each. The coolest thing I don't actually need was a prototype Nitto
Dove bar. I traded a Nitto welded steel stem back to them for it, which
was my previous super-cool thing I don't need. The Freddy Hoffman
 tee-shirt is pretty cool.
