[RBW] rear axle placement/adjuster screw removal

2017-04-10 Thread cliftonjlong
Does anyone know if I can remove the small, threaded, axle positioners from
the rear drop outs without ill effect? Then the axle will go all the way
back. Do the screws significantly strengthen the drop out? I have a
marginal fit with a set of tires and removing the screws will get me a 1/4
inch rearward and possibly enough room to fit. Any thoughts?
Much appreciated! I know that I may have to carefully align the wheel but
I assume the dropouts without the screws are pretty square.)

[RBW] Re: New to Me Bleriot as Road Bike

2017-03-16 Thread cliftonjlong
On the drops or not, a gorgeous build!
I only ride the drops for extended times if it's very windy. Drop bars
just seem to work better for the quiet upper body position that works best
for me on the road. I can shift my hands around for comfort but keep the
same upper body stance, more or less, except in the drops.

[RBW] Re: RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-06 Thread cliftonjlong

Thanks again to everyone for all the useful perspectives! Andy's reply in
particular really speaks to what I'm wondering about. If a Rivendell
really feels like a higher quality bike and is less fatiguing (read more
enjoyable) over middle distances then that appeals to me a lot. As I get
older and more achy but still able and wanting to do 75 mile rides with
some regularity (thanks Advil!) comfort means a lot. I know prices for the
RB-1 peaked some time ago and even fairly priced, good condition examples
with up-graded components seem to languish on Ebay but I assume if I can
honestly say it's an NOS bike/build with one 20 mile shakedown ride I think
it would bring a better premium that if I did a couple of metric centuries
on it. Fortunately it's not nearly spring here in Vermont (was 1 degree
this am) so I have some more time to ponder. Now if I'd only started this
thread before that new 57 Roadeo frame sold on Ebay for $1500!

I've tried to attach a small picture as I have no photo site at the moment.

[RBW] Re: RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-04 Thread cliftonjlong
I have so say thanks for all the great feedback I'm getting! I have a VO
Randonneur, which is very comfortable over longer distances, say 100k to 100
miles. I'm always looking at bikes and couldn't resist the ad for the RB-1.
It is a lot snappier. Maybe I need to see how it feels on a longer ride. The
Bridgestone is beautifully simple and clean but doesn't approach the work of
art beauty of some Rivendells. That's why I asked about the ride quality. I
tend to love any bike that I ride a lot no matter how it looks (once it's set
up right) so a Riv would make sense if it rides much better as well as looks
much better. Maybe ride quality is too subjective but I really like hearing
what people think. I'll put up a picture of the bike soon. Tough choice,
although the Bridgestone catalog from that year (1994) does say: "You cannot
buy a better riding bike than this"!!

[RBW] RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-04 Thread cliftonjlong
I've finished building a complete NOS 1993 RB-1 and now I'm wondering, having
always hankered for a Rivendell, a Legolas in particular, if I should try to
sell it and start fresh. Would the Riv ride much better? The Bridgestone was a
frameset that a rep gave his cousin, was never built, and it sat in the garage
for 22 years until I bought it. I put on a full NOS Dura-Ace 9 speed triple
group with down tube shifters and Nitto bar, stem, etc. Ultegra Open Pro
wheels. Looks like the frame will take 32c and after one short ride it's a
great fit.
But now as I'm waiting for spring, I'm doubting. What does anyone think?
Thanks!
Ps. I know the Legolas is different in many ways but it's the one I always
wanted. Could be a Roadeo these days.
