I had a bit of slip when I first set them up, and like Marc it was cured by

[RBW] Re: Pics of my new Hunqapillar...and a question about handlebar bags

2011-07-04 Thread japhilip
Thanks. Yes two straps to the crossbar and one to the stem. It works
pretty well with a dirt drop stem and drop bar as well if you have no room
for a standard bag. See here:

  http://www.flickr.com/photos/32919632@N04/5595562578/in/set-72157622612630568

The wood grips were too slippery and I've since changed to Ergons on the
Bullmoose bars.

[RBW] Re: jophjr Bombadil, Orthie Bombadil what color?

2010-04-10 Thread japhilip
Yes it's a 64. Unlike Rene I've ridden mine almost exclusively off
road on mostly moderate woodland trails some single track and a good
bit of packed snow. The ride is agile and predictable with great low
speed stability. I feel very comfortable on this bike even with my
high center of gravity and modest off road skills. I did have it on
the road a bit when the trails were too clogged with snow to ride this
winter.  Running 700x50 Big Apples it feels much like my 68 Atlantis;
just plain comfortable, solid and stable. I don't notice the mass
much at all, but like Rene when I get out on the road with the HIlsen
the contrast is evident. But then again... I haven't tried it with
Jack Browns.

Thanks. I'm 6'5" and 230 # and with me and a large load on the bike
there can be enough sway to get a bit of chain rub when standing. For
me it's not much of an issue. I climb seated most of the time and
seldom carry more than a tool kit and water on the Hilsen. The load
you see in the picture was about an extra 15 pounds of bags, picnic
and camera gear : it was unnoticeable. The bike is supremely
comfortable, stable and responsive.
