Hi folks,
The survey clearly made it out that July was the favored month for a

[RBW] FS: 58cm SimpleOne

2015-01-16 Thread justinaugust
Rivendell SimpleOne 58cm $750 + shipping.
Includes Frame/Fork/Headset/Thomson Seatpost
Great frame. Has some beausage and goop on it from shipping to me that I never
got off. I would rate paint as 8/10 as it's seen some round the year commuting
in Philly. Would prefer not to ship. Pickup in Oakland, delivery from Santa
Cruz to Marin and everywhere between!

Pics available on request!

Re: [RBW] Re: New Hatchet Use

2014-12-31 Thread justinaugust
There are several degrees of heel-raise - any degree of which is "less
natural" than a flat shoe. Heels are remnants of
style/class/fashion/gendered oppression and serve little function. There's
arguments for them in running (which barefoot runners disagree with),
Olympic lifting, basketball, etc. I prefer a flat shoe but have come to the
conclusion that I'll take as little heel rise as possible as a substitute
because I am nothing if not a slave to style.

Sadly,
Justin

[RBW] Re: New Kryptonite Bike Lock Idea

I carry 2 locks with me.

That should keep it secure. Or I run the rear one around the rim, over a

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2014-08-04 Thread justinaugust
Question for weight savings:
Given the mass of different objects, where does it make sense to go aluminum OR
titanium over steel? Leaving out crabon since that's not the discussion
- seatpost
- Stem
- Bolts for braze ons
- Bottom Bracket
- Saddle rails
- Racks(Al)
- pedal spindles
- any others? Excluding frame

Where do you gain the most weight advatage by picking the lighter material?

[RBW] Re: Somewhat OT: Advice about basic Kindle versus Kindle Fire

2014-08-02 Thread justinaugust
I have a basic Kindle (pre-Paperwhite Kindle Touch).
It's the perfect non-paper reading device - unless you want to read
magazines. It's black and white. Remember Kindle Fire is the same as
reading on an iPad or iPhone. It doesn't have e-Ink and will
tire/degrade/annoy your eyes and the Kindle Fire won't have as long of
battery life.

1. You can use the "Send To Kindle" email address via Kindle Personal
documents to send text files and PDFS (I THINK!) to your Kindle. Read up
here: http://www.amazon.com/*kindlepersonaldocuments*
They've changed how it works over time so maybe it's different.

2. GMail - yes you can. It is not fun IMO. My father does it on a regular
basis though. He prefers his iPhone however.

3. I usually take mine to the beach once a year (didn't get to this year)
and can read the whole week (5 days, 4-6 hours of reading a day) without
charging. You have the option to turn off the wireless services which will
GREATLY increase your reading time.

I really love mine. Light, useful and does what it's made to do perfectly.
Especially for touring. I wish it wasn't funneling money to Amazon but we
all make compromises!

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

2014-08-01 Thread justinaugust
Squats!
Squats helped to rid me of my chronic knee pain that I blamed on:
- Low Q
- High Q
- Crank length
- Saddle setback
- Foot on pedal position

Squats stretch out that whole system. I would also advise trying the "Couch
Stretch" from Becoming a Supple Leopard, cobra pose, child pose and many
other olympic weightlifting type stretches.

My two cents after you get the saddle in place.

Sugino Mighty Tour crank. 171mm. 110bcd. $100
This is perhaps the nicest crank I've ever had my hands on. It's a gorgeous
110bcd "compact" double (comes with 34/52 rings that're original to it, but
a 48 has been mounted instead of 52. Comes with all 3.). This was bought
"NOS" from Via Bicycle in Philly and ridden around the city on my Bleriot
and Saluki. Condition is 9/10 still I'd say. Including the Truvativ "113mm"
bottom bracket and spacers that I used to get it to work on my Saluki. Not
guaranteeing this is the ideal BB for it.

Pickup is available and preferred in Oakland. Also posting this on
Craigslist, to be warned.

Rivendell SimpleOne 58cm $750 + shipping.
Includes Frame/Fork/Headset/Thomson Seatpost/113mm Bottom Bracket.
Great frame. Has some beausage and goop on it from shipping to me that I
never got off. I would rate paint as 8/10 as it's seen some round the year
commuting in Philly. Would prefer not to ship.

Tubus Fly - $75
Nitto Mini-Front Campee - $90
Paul Mini Moto (Black) - $200 for two wheels worth. Low miles, best
canti-stud mounted brake I've used. Works with "regular" pull levers
Sugino XD2 Double Crankarms 170mm - $50 (no rings!)
650b SS/Fixed Wheelset - $300
Velo-Orange 650b Diagonale rims laced 32 spokes to Velo-Orange Grand Cru
bolt on hubs. Fixed/Fixed rear but a freewheel works just fine. Would
prefer not to ship.
Phil Wood 111mm BB. $75
Comes with english rings and installation tool.
Velo-Orange 80mm (I think, it's short!) stem, 25.4mm clamp - $25

Offers accepted but prices are fairly low already.

***Trades I'd be interested in***
Mark's Rack
Nitto Bullmoose bars.
650b rear wheel suitable for (not extreme!) off-road duty.
Nitto 80mm 26.0 stem.

Thanks!

[RBW] Edeluxe on sidepull bike mounting?

It's definitely crazy expensive if you're only looking at SON + Edluxe!
Checkout the Handspun Pavement series and B&M Cyo series.

And yes the SON Deluxe is the only "wireless" one but it does require a custom
fork be built.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Silver Gruppo

2014-07-04 Thread justinaugust
If you look for pictures from the Riv garage sale you'll find them.

I think the concept of a gruppo would be cool. However to keep in line with the
ethos of the company one must wonder where and how they'd be made. So many
companies that create or design things get torn down around these and other
Internet parts due to perceptions around manufacturing, design, purported
rebadging and the like.
