[RBW] Berthoud 650b fender clearance? (was Honjo 650b fender clearance question?!)
Is there anyone out there that has Hetres in a 58cm 650b AHH, with Berthoud 650x50mm fenders? Can it be done? I wonder, but I don't really $136-for-tires-that-may-not-fit wonder. In any case, the wider tires are on their way - but not because the tires wouldn't work with the 45s... more because I just love installing fenders. [RBW] Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?
Indeed... I've been watching this with interest. I'm recently forced off bikes (ribs/clavicle/lung as a result of a crash) for a while, so I guess I don't really have the urgency to get into another bike (there's plenty mental emotional urgency, just no bodily wherewithal). I think those reasons I cited for getting this for myself are valid, only not necessarily timely. RoadieRyan, am I correct in understanding there are unpurchased Bleriots out there somewhere? [RBW] Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?
Thanks for the replies; they are strengthening my resolve. My completely illogical resolve. I promised myself that I was done buying bikes after I built my Roadeo last December (2009 was a profound year for bikes for me). I have everything I need (I don't have a cross bike, actually), and my apartment is overrun by bikes! Alas, the creeping desires have crept. The thought of a lighter, plusher daily bike, and all those fringe benefits of another 650B (at what would seem to be a great price for what it is) - a backup rando, a travel bike, etc. Then I remembered that I like my LHT a lot! But it is heavy, and I do carry it up down my stairs every day. Not to mention the LHT is rather more replaceable than a Bleriot, [insert- diety] forbid! Then again, I really like the feel of my 650B AHH. I would very much prefer to ride something that felt like that here in the city every day. And why not do so, right? Life is for the living of it, and mine has significant 2-wheeled co-existence... may as well fully enjoy it! This daily Bleriot will see some real action! Chicago streets, Chicago winter, not-concrete/asphalt road surfaces, the occasional trailer, whatever dancing a bunch of bikes get into when they're crammed onto bike racks. The Surly takes it all in stride, so I'd want the Bleriot to do the same. I won't abuse it, but I will use it! Now I just have to find it (the impending agony of ebay, blech). Having said that, is anyone on the fence about their personal 59cm Bleriot? Thanks for indulging me On May 10, 7:43 am, Ray Shine r.sh...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Terry -- I agree with Steve. [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?
My hat went in late to this ring as well, and I'm looking forward to seeing the tan sidewall 38s on my Hilsen. I have great hope they'll fit well under the fenders, where Hetres just wouldn't. Last summer, when I built the bike, I was riding the 32mm Cypres and was happy. As weather and ground conditions faltered (Chicago), I got CdlV and measured 36mm. I really liked the ride, running about 50psi give or take a few puffs, over all sorts of fun stuff (snow, mud, weird Prairie Path mud (limestone), who knows what else). Now with the impending bloom of these ~38mm tires, I can hardly wait, but I'm fine waiting. More than anything I'm very glad Mr Pacenti took the initiative to spearhead this, and I'm so very grateful to all who participated. What I'm a touch bummed about is that according to posts on the 650b list the tan wall version (which I ordered) has a lower thread-count casing than the black wall version. Apparently the black wall was needed to protect the lighter casing cords. Nobody yet seems to know if the two versions will differ in performance, and it would be an expensive test to buy a pair of each and find out for myself. So, I'm hoping for the best. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?
I ride a 58cm LHT as my daily bike here in Chicago, and I ride a 58cm 650B Hilsen, set up for brevets and meandering. There's always a downer moment after I spend a weekend on long rides on the AHH and the smoothness there, when getting back on the LHT and the less- smoothness there. (Don't get me wrong, the Surly is an excellent bike for my needs, so I'm confused at my thinking and emotions.) I've *often* thought how great it would be to just ride the Hilsen day in/ day out. But that would be unwise where I ride -- note that I'm too chicken to commute daily on my QB. My ebay saved search brought the 59cm Bleriot mentioned above to my attention, and my gears are turning. Could I really seriously consider a functional migration from my LHT to a Bleriot? Not only that, but the Bleriot would serve as an ideal backup to my AHH. Given a long-term relationship with a Bleriot, I'd even consider SS couplers so I could easily get elsewhere for brevets, or have a bike when I visit family, etc. To not have to carry my LHT up down 4 flights of stairs every day, carrying a Bleriot instead. I think that would be another improvement (would it?). I see one Bleriot on my commute sort of occasionally, and one (and the same?) parks not far from where I work. The potential availability of a 59 Bleriot is - how shall I say it? - troubling? Enticing. On May 8, 6:58 am, Johnny Alien johnnyal...@verizon.net wrote: That whole deal was a shame. Rob, great links, thanks! I think I'll try these myself! Joe, good to see you here! (First thought when I saw your reply: Hey Joe, where you goin' with that 'beam in your hand? I have no idea why.) I'm planning on doing the annual Perimeter ride on Saturday, quite possibly on my Quickbeam (http://www.thechainlink.org/events/perimeter- ride) Take care, everyone. Rich, I've lead a few club rides from the city out to the far SW burbs and back. While it's not the most bike friendly place, it is certainly doable by bike. Someone has already prepared a cue sheet for you to ride from Joliet (well actually from the MIssissippi River) to Chicago. The League of Illinois Bicyclists has a Route 66 Tour later this month. See:http://www.bikelib.org/route66/2009ride You'll find the south-to-north cue sheet here:http://www.bikelib.org/route66/northbound.pdf This route takes you right past Union Station. There route is not as direct as I would ride, but probably more friendly. Personally, I would just stay on Ogden Ave. once I'm in the city all the way to Jackson Blvd. But I'm a bit of a hard-core bike in the city, don't really mind traffic, kind of guy. If you are going to be in Chicago over a weekend, check out the Chicago Cycling Club schedule and come join us for a ride.http://chicagocyclingclub.org Sunday September 13th is the Boulevard Lakefront Tour, a 15, 27, 35 or 62 mile tour of the city. It benefits our local bike advocacy group, ActiveTrans. If you are in town, it is definitely worth checking out. I'll be driving SAG for the 27 62 mile routes. http://www.boulevardtour.org Happy riding and enjoy your trip to Chicago! - Rob --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hi from Chicago
Wow, this is great! There are a bunch of Rivs out here! I wonder what would happen if they were all in the same place at the same time - will they oscillate in friendly ways or anything? (I jest, of course.) I've got a silver Quickbeam, which is a great bike as you know. I just recently finished building my Hilsen, and it happens to be a 650B frame (yet 58cm). I feel quite fortunate! My around-town daily commuter is actually a Surly LHT, which I find to be an excellent bike for our city riding conditions (i.e. I feel less worried with it locked up vs. a Rivendell). That one sees year-round action here, and it's holding up beautifully (I made some pertinent modifications, and it's perfect!). Rich, there are several really great shops in Chicago. I personally spend my time money at Boulevard Bikes in Logan Square. It's a low- key easy-going place. Kevin the owner turned me on to Bike Quarterly a while back, which led to me wanting a 650B bike, which led to the AHH frameset I scored off the Riv frame specials page. I'm very into supporting my LBS, and I got nearly all my parts for the Hilsen from them (minus a couple things from Rivendell and ebay). If you like doing your own wrenching our local non-profit bike group is West Town Bikes, and they have open shops on Tuesday nights and Saturday afternoons. I've never ridden to/from Joliet, but I'm sure it's not uncommon. IM Canal Trail appears to cover a lot ground, and I just heard that the frontage road along 55 is decent too. The suburban commuter rail, Metra, will allow bikes as well provided it's not a blackout weekend. I think there are 2 lines from Joliet, their schedules are available online at http://www.metrarail.com. Everything terminates downtown, either in Union Station or sort of around the corner/down the block at the LaSalle St. station. The city trains busses also accommodate bikes - they're called CTA, but the trains don't allow bikes during weekday rush hours. I could probably ramble on for hours on Chicago cycling On Aug 17, 4:55 am, mitchelr mitch...@onid.orst.edu wrote: Terry and Rocky and the rest of Chicago's Rivfolk: Glad to hear there is Riv interest in that great city of yours. On Aug 17, 1:13 pm, JoelMatthews joelmatth...@mac.com wrote: Second the recommendation for Boulevard Bikes. A great shop with a great bunch of workers. The excellent and very unique Lula Cafe is right next door for you to enjoy while repairs are underway. Right! Dunlays on the Square around the corner is decent, too. But hey, in Chicago there's great food all over the place! Doesn't the IM stop pretty far west of the Loop though? If the frontage road on I-55 gets you further, that may work. My concern is someone not familiar with the area may have to jump off on local roads, many of which dead end because of all the rail, canals and industrial stuff out there. Totally agree. I'm looking at the blue Chicago bike map, and though I could find some serpentine path through the southwest side, I see how it could be daunting. Going out of the way north or east to hit better-known routes might be preferable. Either way, sounds like I ought to get a bike out there to see for myself! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
