Re: [RBW] FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread Doug H.
Yes, yes. Paradigm shifts move like glaciers. I get it. I used to ride 23 mm
tires at 95 psi thinking it made me faster because of less friction. The race
bike culture ruined my enjoyment of riding! Give me width or give me bone
rattling vibration. I’m enjoying riding again.

Re: [RBW] FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread Joe Bernard
All later Rivs had wider tire clearances. This was very early in the process
when Grant was still battling to build a road bike around ridiculous-short
racing brakes, hence the soon-to-be-introduced LongLow, which was a "sport
touring" road bike with cantilevers.

Then somehow he got Shimano to make medium-reach Ultegra calipers, followed by
Tektro long-reach. Btw this all upended what we call these things: Short used
to be standard and medium was long. Got all that? 

I'm surprised that 700 x 30 is the widest tire that will fit considering
the current design philosophy. Do their current road oriented bikes have
the same width limitations?

Do you know the standover with the 28c tires? And would you be able to meet
at a BART station? I'm in SF. I'm crazy for even typing this...

[RBW] FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread Joe Bernard
Christopher, I did some memory jogging about this frame last night (cuz I dig
it even though it's too big for me) and found Jim's links. I'm pretty sure this
is a first-gen Waterford Road Standard..scroll down a bit to click on a
geometry page. It's actually a 57cm.

[RBW] FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread Christopher Cote
That is so tempting, even though I already have a Rambouillet that is mostly
the same that I don't ride enough. Do you know when it was made? Is it a
custom, or one of the early production models? Any idea what the seat and head
tube angles are? Looks like short reach brakes might be a better fit. The early
road standards were built around those, as "standard" reach brakes were
unavailable new at the time.
