Re: [RBW] Grocery Run - No Trailer Test

2017-12-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Any idea of the total weight in all those bags?

I recall trying out front loading, in a very cursory way, some 6-8 years
ago, with a thrift store Schwinn Voyager, to which I'd attached Wald's
biggest front basket. I carried as much as 56 lbs in it, but handling was
simply not safe; neither riding it or, worse, walking it when the front
weight would make the back end flip up and over.

Looks pretty deep! I found myself unable to maintain momentum even in fresh
untouched snow much over 1' deep here in VA last week... Maybe I need more
practice! :)

Gorgeous shots as always, thanks for sharing.

Re: [RBW] Grocery Run

2016-02-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
All told, Tony, we got about 20". So much of what is rideable depends on
how wet the snow it and what lies beneath. This was nearly champaign
powder, so rideable just barely.

I was running 26x1.9" Nokian M studded tires and I bogged down very
quickly in 8"+ snow on the bike paths I tried to ride on... Those tires
with great on the ice-rutted trails after a refreeze.

I was surprised at how easy 4-5" was, but my tires measure 58 mm wide (Race

What tires were you riding? I daresay 12" would have been very different.

Virgin snow, not packed or rutted.

[RBW] grocery run

2012-12-22 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Took the Sam to the supermarket today to get some groceries. Not a
huge load, but enough to fill 2 smallish panniers and a large saddle
bag. I commute with just the saddle bag so I'm not used to that much
weight. Thing is, it felt pretty good. Uphill took a little more
effort but on the flats it just seemed like the bike went by itself.
It was almost like a different bike. My 11 year old was with me so I
was to riding slower so he could keep up. That was easy to do unloaded
but almost impossible loaded with groceries.

I've heard people say similar things about a bike designed
specifically for loaded touring (Surly LHT), but never about a Riv.

I'm sure it has something to do with inertia.

One thing I didn't like was much weight in the klick fix basket I put
on the handlebars. 2 bags of veggies was too much wheel flop, so those
went in the saddlebag and the eggs rode in the basket by themselves.
Eggs made it home fine.
