Lum and Tim: thanks; Jim's photo pinpointed my memory cells. Lon's bike, at
least as written up in an old RR, was a custom built with 3 cogs on a hub
with some sort of freewheel -- don't know if was a cassette hub or if the
wheel had a 3 speed fw.

[RBW] Homer as a brevet bike: Keep on the rear rack?

2017-12-29 Thread Lynne Fitz
My Bleriot was my rando bike for the first 3 years of randonneuring. It was
ALSO my commute bike, and had a rear rack.  I'd attach the Barley for brevets;
it would rest on the rear rack. Rode up to 300ks with it - that was as far as
I went back then.

https://flic.kr/p/62eNHc

As for an Atlantis as a brevet bike - I know of at least two. One has a rear
rack; the rider likes the Banjo bag with the fold down mini-panniers.

The rear rack gives you flexibility, especially on point to point rides where
there isn't someone ferrying a bag for you. On my recent dart populaire we
drove to the closest train station, rode 7 miles to the start (did I mention it
was freezing :-) ), and did the ride. As we were staying over and taking the
train back to our cars the next day, a change of clothes and necessities was a
good idea. My current brevet bike (custom Sweetpea) normally has the Carradice
Bagman for the Barley, but I do have a Racktime Fold-it rear rack, and the
aforementioned Banjo Brothers bag for events such as this.

[RBW] Homer as a brevet bike: Keep on the rear rack?

2017-12-29 Thread Preston Smith
Hey Ian,

Bike is 63cm frame with 700c x 38mm tires. I think the deep-ish velocity quill
rims with flatt-ish compass tires give the illusion of a 650b wheel. I get that
all the time.

2017-12-29 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay, perhaps I should clarify: I don’t think you’ll need the rear rack, I just
Think that it’s presence is neutral. Personally, even on a 1200k, I prefer my
stuff in the handlebar bag, and it holds everything I need.

Patrick Moore: I read exhaustively about randonneuring shen I took it up. I
remember seeing one photo of Lon’s bike in a riders report. Lam posted perhaps
the same link in a previous thread here. It is in Chip Caldwell’s ride report
of the 2003 PBP, which is on the RUSA site. I can’t get either link to work
today but here they are.

I remember the bike as having been a custom. I don’t remember it having a rack
but I don’t claim to have anything near total recall. I believe it was a fixed
gear, though.

[RBW] Homer as a brevet bike: Keep on the rear rack?

2017-12-29 Thread Preston Smith
Hey Jay,

I think the Homer makes a great rando bike. That's what I'm using mine for
anyway (as well as general road riding, commuting, and riding gravel and forest
roads.)

Personally id say a rear rack would be over kill for most brevets under 300k.
I've found on a 200k with nice weather you don't really need much. I use a
small style berthoud h bar bag for rides like that.

On longer rides or when the weather is crumby I use a larger rando bag or even
a wald basket. Ive also added a third bottle cage for mixed terrain rides when
water sources are far and few between.

But yea, like others said lots of different ways to set up your bike. Have fun!
I'll attach a photo of my bike set up for most rides under 300k.

ps
What rando club are you riding with?

[RBW] Homer as a brevet bike: Keep on the rear rack?

2017-12-29 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I’ve used my Atlantis for a 200km brevet once. For the locals, it was the
now-discontinued SFR Pt. Reyes Lighthouse season opener, typically done in Jan
with cold (for CA), rains, winds, and flabby legs. The Atlantis was outfitted
as my commuter, with drop bars, front and rear racks, fenders, and dynamo front
lights. I ran Compass McClure Pass tires then, simply because the Naches Pass
tires weren’t out yet. It wasn’t the “ideal” brevet bike, and one SFR volunteer
even jokingly asked if the course wasn’t challenging enough; but all
randonneurs know that past a certain point, finishing brevets is all about
steadfast foolhardiness, obstinance, and masochism. :)

On a more serious note, while I do feel my Atlantis is slower than some of my
other bikes, it is fast enough that it didn’t impede my completion of said
brevet. Some had written that the Atlantis is the Jack of All Trades, and I
believe that’s an apt description.

To the OP: keep the rack; don’t keep the rack; it won’t matter.

The extra light are the best tire I’ve ever ridden. Homer fits 38s with fenders.

John asked about the Atlantis. I’ve ridden with an Atlantis rider in brevets.
He rode it on PBP. I’ve heard of others and may well have seen one or two more.
I’ve seen a Riv on nearly every brevet ridden.

Not to hijack the thread, but have people used an Atlantis as a brevet bike? I
have lights, racks (front and rear), and fenders on mine, and Compass 44mm
tires.

And yeah, I get that any bike can be a brevet bike. Just curious if folks have
ridden brevets on their Atlantis.

[RBW] Homer as a brevet bike: Keep on the rear rack?

2017-12-28 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’ve ridden 2 full brevet series on my Homer. Fenders, Nitto front rack,
Berthoud handlebar bag, no rear rack. I put the rear rack on for a tour this
summer. I can’t imagine that you would see much improvement by removing it. I
have a different rando bike now (although here yet to ride one on it) but if I
had to use the Homer on a brevet, I’d leave the rack on. BUT...you would not
regret switching to Compass tires if you haven’t yet done so. That will make a
huge difference...

After three years of ownership, I’m going to tackle a few “shorter” brevets on
my Homer this Spring. I typically a have the Nitto/Rivendell rack on the back
