[RBW] Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions

2013-05-12 Thread Jonathan Shinefeld
On my Rambouillet, I found that fastex buckles work really well to secure the
large saddle sack. Half the fastex is triple zipped tied to each Brooks saddle
hoop. The other side is attached to the bag with short leather straps. The bag
sits flat on a Nitto mini rack with a light nylon strap wrapped under the bag
around the rack. Of course I can't see the bag when I ride, but it feels pretty
stable. I've also used this setup for years with a Carradice Long Flap.
Cheap, easy on and off and very convenient for commuting where I can't leave
the bag on the bike.

[RBW] Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions

2013-05-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Today's ride confirmed that the large SS is the way to go. I removed my small
SS and just used the panniers, which have the same capacity as the large. But
the panniers are a lot more brain energy to access and close up, let alone
remember which side what is on. Thank you for all the input guys and gals!

Interestingly, I found the xs SS works best for me on the handlebars. I had
moved it to the saddle under the logic that nothing on the handlebars may be
better than even an xs. Nope. The wee bit of weight is a good thing and doesn't
mess with stearing at all. Much easier to push the bike up steep trails and
climbing when riding is also easier -- I presume because the weight helps keep
the stearing from getting too light.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions

2013-05-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Once the Large SaddleSacks are back in stock I plan on getting one as my
everyday bag on the bike. It will rest on a Nitto Large Rear Rack. I plan on
strapping it down with 1-2 short Irish Straps. For camping, I will put the
Sackville Panniers under it and am hoping the lashing points match up all
right. I often lay the bike down, especially when loaded as the kickstand and
dirt just do not hold it upright and there may not be a tree where I am
stopping.

My questions:

-- What kinds of loads do you carry?
-- Do you anchor it down and if so, how?
-- How does it handle being laid down? Does it lay down better anchored or
unanchored?
-- If unanchored, how does it ride on rough roads when loaded?

Thanks!

With abandon,
Patrick
