[RBW] Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

2014-09-08 Thread Call Me Jay
I'm thinking of getting a front rack and Wald basket for my newish Homer
for commuting use. I already have a Sackville Shop Sack so it seems like a
no brainer. That said, I'd like to able easily take off the basket for
weekend rides with a rando bag without having to cut zip ties. Kind of a
hassle and a bit wasteful. Any suggestions?

Hey all,
I use old leather toe straps. Works great.

2014-09-08 Thread Michael Williams
Hey Jay, not that this is a solution, but I was having the same
thoughts, so I tried reusable 'velcro' zip ties, and they just dont work.
They dont get tight enough to keep the basket stable, in my experience.

Re: [RBW] Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

2014-09-08 Thread Tim Gavin
You could use heavy-duty twist ties. They make foam-wrapped ones

that would protect the finish of the rack (but they look bulky).

Or seek out zip ties that are re-usable

.

But, like Michael points out, they may not stay tight enough to keep a
loaded basket stable.

Many front "rando racks" have been broken by this technique. The loads
you can put in a basket can exceed the weight limit of a rando rack by
quite a bit.

Jay,
I had better luck with velcro ties than did Michael Williams. I used ones
that are intended for organizing cables. You can see my setup here:

platrack underneath the basket obviously helps a lot too.

Don't forget Bungie Cords, try threading one or two across the basket and
down to the hub zone. Or a cord and a bungie net, sold in local bike shops
and online. Running them in opposing directions can tighten loose
connections, and still be easy to put on and take off.

+1 on small bungies. Make sure you get them tight and use a couple, wrapping
around rack in different spots.
Toestrap work too, but it's hard to get the required tightness so the basket
won't be wobbly.

Ditto. I used velcro wire wraps backed by pieces of cloth handle bar tape.
. I think six in all. It worked OK but I found I rarely used the basket
anyway.

Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

Jay,

I am successfully using the velcro ties to secure my rear basket to my drop bar
converted vintage Specialized MTB 'grocery getter'

bike with no problems.

Contributing to my method working could be the quantity as I used a dozen of
them and some of mine

are a bit heavier duty than those linked.

I just removed it over the Labor day weekend for riding around Austin, TX &
installed it back again upon returning.

It does take a bit longer with so many but not too big of a hassle and like you
I did not like wasting all the plastic zip ties/tie wraps.

I can lift the rear of the bike by the basket and there is no movement. I did
snug them down pretty tightly even breaking one by pulling too tightly.

The ties I used were purchased at Home Depot.

Sometimes I really load that basket down, lots of groceries, and even
occasionally carrying another complete bike on top of it.

Safe pedaling,

Paul in Dallas

Re: [Bulk] [RBW] Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

2014-09-15 Thread Dave Johnston
If you wrap each zip tie 4 or more times around before you "zip" it, each
time you cut it you can wrap one less time, getting 4 or so uses out of
each tie. You have to cut it in the right spot though, right where it
enters into the locking mechanism, don't cut the locking fat end off!

Re: [Bulk] [RBW] Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

2014-09-16 Thread Leslie
I suppose it might've been a touch of overkill, but, my approach was:

I zip-tied my Wald to a Platrack, which I can then mount or remove from the
front rack as needed...

The Platrack adds a touch of weight, but, it's durable, makes a good
platform for the basket.
