[RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
Cavedale is pretty rough road at times, Looks so different in the after-the-fire landscape. Great for 37mm or wider tires. Trinity is much better pavement but has some steep climbs (and fun descents). If you’re coming from the Glen Ellen side you can loop Trinity and Cavedale from one side of Glen Ellen to the other. Or you can take Trinity from north Glen Ellen over into Napa (via Oakville Grade, Dry Creek, or Mr. Veeder roads ... Veeder is definitely the hard way). You’ll see very few cars (but they may also be surprised to see you) which is my favorite part. Lots of different ways to ride over that mountain, it’s really beautiful up there right now, lots of creeks and mini waterfalls and clear skies after the rain. Also, Bothe / Napa State Park has a great bike in campsite just south of Calistoga. Abe On Monday, 14 January 2019 20:07:34 UTC-8, Philip Williamson wrote: > That looks great. That looks great. I’m going to give those roads a try. I’ve wanted to do Cavedale and Trinity Road for a while now. That's one good-looking rig, Abe! Those who disparage the Napa area for riding clearly don't know the west (Mayacamas) side of the valley. I live out toward the west end of Browns Valley and the Dry Creek / Mt Veeder loop is my go to ride. Partrick Rd and Henry Rd are also big time favorites. Love how lightly travelled they are If you see a guy on an old Romulus or Hunqapillar waving to you someday, that'd be me! Thanks for all the feedback folks, it’s a really fun ride! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who wants to swap handlebars around. I’ll solder the cable ends so I can swap cockpits without messing up my cables. Really looking forward to the Dirt Drop bars. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
I currently have Supple Vittesse 48's on my canti-Sam (they just fit with around 2.5-3mm of wiggle room, measuring an actual 47mm), but I've been debating trying some 38mm Compass (err, Rene Herse) tires this summer, primarily for fendering. [RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
I ride a Sammy with 44cm Noodles and love love love it! Been on it - or "in it" - since 2009. If I were to change bars - not planning on it - Id go with the Albastache. I know the Deacon has enthused about these before, so I won't bother, since I haven't used them. I have, however, ridden the old Mustache bars for years - on my XO-3 - and really liked them for off-roading. Thanks for the ride report! Gorgeous roads you have to ride. Love to see those on the reports. J. [RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
Great looking bike, great looking ride! I have the same Sam; I picked it up off this list about a year ago now. Like Tim I've swapped around cockpit setups for the past year-- started with Mustache, went to Albatross, then to Albastache, now Noodles. This is the first time I've set up a bike with drops in years because I swore they were the worst, and was convinced I couldn't make them work on my Sam because of the TT length. Boy was I wrong! Now I have the elusive "bike that makes you want to ride more." I'm planning a tire upgrade from my Marathon 38s and have been going back and forth between Barlow Pass (38s) and Snoqualmie Pass (44s). I'm just not sure if one day I'll want to squeeze fenders on there, and that seems less likely with the Snoqualmies. Anyway, that's a good lookin' 'za you've got on there. [RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
Glad you liked the t-rex, he's got a metal monkey friend too - I'll get a pic with him next time. That's up Dry Creek Rd in Napa, leads to Trinity Rd (near where I grew up) then loops over to Mt. Veeder Rd which is an uphill slob but has a fun ride down the other side. I really wasn't sure what to expect with the Compass tires - I've never spent that much on tires before (always had some sort of touring Continental or the Basketball tires) but the ride was just great, quiet, and smooth (for an otherwise very bumpy road at parts, some of it is down to one lane after the fires and rain ... just means fewer cars so that's fine by me). [RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
Congratulations on your new Sam. I also have a 2TT Sam set up with Albatross bars. It is a fantastic bike. I have tinkered a lot with mine. Started out with drops, then Albatross, back to drops, to Albastache and now back to the Albatross. I think I'm settled on this setup for now. Good luck with it and enjoy the ride!
