Sounds to me as though you have every reason to stay with your local,
regular shop.

That said, the shop where I regularly go knew it was a Riv at first

Compliment my bike and I'm a fan for life. :)

Re: [RBW] Re: An Amusing Bike Service Anecdote

2016-04-27 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

I'm in Patrick's camp here. I would guess more shops than not have never
heard of Rivendell. What a great opportunity to share why some of the
features of Riv style bikes make so much sense for so many riders! I think
more women in particular might be more inclined toward cycling if the
mainstream image weren't so competition-oriented (though that is changing
with companies like Public). But if your regular shop is so close that you
can walk the bike over with a pinch flat, and the new shop is so far you
must drive, and you really like the folks and service at the old
shop--still, it seems the women's run shop has more convenient hours. No
need to be a preacher or a prophet, just a friendly disciple!

I told my local shop about VeloOrange years ago, and now if I need a VO
product I can order it through them. Working on getting them to stock
Compass tires...And yes, they know of Rivendell. One of the guys has a Hunq

Valve stems. OMG. :)

Anyway, I'd say keep going back to the "new woman-owned, and

Eventually, somebody will get curious, and you'll be compelled to

When I lived in rural Australia, I made my maiden voyage down to the local
Treks-for-dads-BMX-for-kids chain shop to grab some tubes.

There was obviously a store policy in effect where an employee had to make
a point of complimenting something on or about the patron's bike when it
rolled in (which is a totally great policy, by the way).

Upon seeing my XO-1, replete and resplendent in all manner of Holy BOB-ish
Grail parts, the tech behind the counter gave it three or fours up and
downs with a puzzled brow, scrambling for recognition.

He finally exclaimed, "Nice King headset!"
