Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis build help
It should clear the second-to-last, but yes, if it's an old 32-max mech it won't pull back far enough away from that big 36 cog to drop the chain on it. Try pulling the cable where it runs along the chainstay by hand. If it shifts up into 34/36 then you may need to take a little slack out of the cable. [RBW] Re: Atlantis build help
Double check that the gear cable didn't hop out of the cast-in guides on the bottom bracket. In the work stand I tend to move the shifters unlike I do on the road and sometimes advance the cable without crank rotation to allow the derailleur to move laterally, producing slack enough to let the hanging cable find its' way to the best A to B line and suddenly poor shifting despite meticulous set up to that point. [RBW] Re: Atlantis build help
Shawn OK, great, that provides an excellent clue. Here is a very common mistake. Sometimes when you pull OFF the bar end shifter from a bike, the shifter is in an up position, like it was in the middle of the cassette. Then, when you reinstall it onto the barend pod you put it in the down position. That square shaped recess that you fit the base washer on to allows you to do this. The problem is that now you have hidden 2 or 3 clicks of your shifter. When you try to pull up to the bigger cogs on the cassette it goes click-click-click-click-SLIIIDE. The shifter feels like it only has 5 or 6 clicks instead of the 9 distinct positions it is supposed to have. Could you have done this? If so, remove the cable and count the clicks. If you don't have 9 distinct positions, then push the shifter all the way down, and then unscrew it. Re-attach it with the base washer rotated 90 degrees up, and count again. If you now have 9 distinct positions, then move on. Check this first and then get back to us. Or if you are sure this already works, let us know and we'll move on. Is the B screw pulling the derailleur back far enough so that it clears the largest cog? Are you trying to shift into the largest cog on the rear while you're on the largest front chain ring? Is your chain long enough? Did you make sure that the shifter lever was bottomed out when you attached the rear derailleur cable? Check the derailleur cable tension. Is it too loose when the spring tension on the rear derailleur is fully relaxed? There are at least a few other reasons . . . Your LX derailer may not be rated to a 36-tooth cog. Older ones went to 32, then later 34. I think the newest SGS versions climb to 36, but I'm not certain. Do you know what generation/model you have? Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA. I cannot for the life of me get the rear cassette to shift into the largest two cogs. The drive train is as follows: Sugino XD-2 46/36/24, Shimano cassettes- 9 Speed 12-36t, Shimano Deore LX rear derailer, Shimano Deore XT front derailer. I believe my chain line is ok. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
