That's a great tip if you use grips Rene :) I personally don't use them !
I tape the bar with cork tape :) I use thumbshifters mounted in the inside
top curve, and bar end brake levers, so I have about 12 inches of open bar
to move around . It's Glorious Freedom !!! This to me expresses the full
beauty of the Alba bars to allow All-that-open-bar-space to be used
for the hands. Putting tiny(to me) grips on a huge bar like the Alba is
like limiting yourself to two grip points on a steering wheel of a car.
You've got the whole circle, but choose to only grip in two places. Kinda
silly to me !

That's how I also set up my Bosco bars. Reverse brake levers and tape. Smooth
free and clean to put your hands anywhere!

Re: [RBW] Re: Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question

2013-06-05 Thread bobish
It's not either or. I put the levers in the conventional place (about a grip's
worth from the bar end) but ride with my hands in many positions, (looped
around levers, in front of levers, on the bends out front, etc). As with drop
bars, I use the lever as part of the bar.

I think you're right about an 11 or 12. In my opinion, any frame properly
sized for you is going to require a long stem for bars with that much
sweep-back. I'm a little guy, and even on an AHH which was a size too big
for me, Albas with a 12 were *still* too close for me.

I thought a longer stem (11 or 12) would be better - but the LBS cautioned

Most of the internet chatter about stem length discuss drop bars, not

What stem length are other women on the Betty/Yves using - I prefer being
somewhat leaned over, not too upright!

[RBW] Re: Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question

2013-06-04 Thread Garth

*Longer stems are usually for men*. Ahahahahaah !As if *that* has
anything to do with your choice lol. I would try another shop, one
that can let you borrow or try out some different length stems before
buying them. Or like me , I bought an inexpensive VO threadless stem
adapter , and some inexpensive threadless stems on ebay. I use them for
fitting purposes, or in the case of one bike I ended up using the VO
adapter as I found a great looking threadless stem :) The beauty of these
are you can change any time. If you ever changed bars, change the
threadless stem instead of the whole *unwrap the bars and find a new stem
thing*.

I would not cut the bars ! No way !!! Stems are much easier to change and
why they exist in different sizes. Once you cut a bar ... there is no
adding it back !

Trust yourself ... you know your body better than any bike shop as to what
YOU want :)

2013-06-04 Thread Garth
I should have noted I use a 0 degree 13cm. stem on my 60cm Bombadil
even with it's long-ish top tube. If the TT was more than a cm. shorter ,
I'd use a 14cm.
My bars are a couple of inches above the middle of the saddle. But with
the Albas I can literally ride with my elbows on top of the bars in hight
winds, so having lower bars is not necessarily better . An Aerodynamic
position is not all about bar height, because one with a flatish back and
arms bent at a right angle is more aero than one with a flatish or rising
back and arms pointed downward at an angle to lower bars. The arms are
levers ... and are meant to bend !!!

One way to assess if you'd like a longer stem is to move your brake levers
and grips (or remove the grips for a while) forward to pretend the bar is
further away and see if you prefer that. If your grips are glued it might
mean destroying them and then getting a new set once you've decided, which
if you go for a longer stem you'll have to do anyway...
