[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-05 Thread 'thalasin' via RBW Owners Bunch
I got one! 54 cm dark gold. I hopped on it right away and it looks like
it's a good thing I did. From what I can tell, they sold out of 54's within
15 minutes or so. I saw a comment on the IG post that someone had one in
their cart and it was sold by the time they tried to check out.

This will be my second Riv...I picked up a used creamsicle Ram in 2001 that
I still have. I'm excited to finally be able to buy new and support Riv in
a big way!

Russ's Hillborne review on Path Less Pedaled finally pushed me to pull the
trigger. Maybe he should get a commission. ;)

2020-11-05 Thread velomann
I will be taking delivery of a new "Dark Gold" 51cm Sam as soon as Golden
Pliers receives it and I'm stoked!
I've been corresponding with Will and Kevin at Golden Pliers since details
first started coming out, and put half down with Kevin so he could get his
shop order in as soon as possible - GP took over the Portland Rivendell
dealership after Rivelo closed.
The Gold 51's apparently sold out first, and I'd been told that Riv
expected that since Blue Lug had already spoken for most of them - they
were on BL's website several days ago.
I've been a Riv fan for years, and owned several Bridgestone road and
mountain bikes, and applied various Riv-inspired treatment to other bikes
as well. But this Sam is my first actual Rivendell.
I've been accumulating parts for the build for months and have everything
ready to go. I'll post pictures when it's done, but you can expect that
it's going to be singular and color-coordinated ;-)

2020-11-06 Thread Nathan Mattia
I think the reason people are so excited about the Hillborne’s is that they
resemble something of a more mainstream bike. I realize it’s not entirely
true, but it seems like for several months, the only bikes you could buy
from Riv had insanely long chain stays or were all step-thru mixtes.
I know that a Gallop or a Platypus may inevitably be in my future, but
people dig more traditional bikes as well.
I’m a bit surprised the middle sizes are sold out so quickly.

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-07 Thread Mark Roland
True, the last couple batches o' bikes were from the Hillibike line, which
does have the longest wheelbases of all the Rivs, and one variation is a
step through. But i'm not convinced about the "more mainstream" and some
kind of relief from "insanely long chain stays."

Right now you can't really buy ANY bicycles from Rivendell other than a
couple of models, and *only* in the smallest size. I think part of the
reason for this is that the company has built up its dealer network,
including and particularly Blue Lug.

Also the latest batch of Sams is back to canti/v-brakes, which many people
seem to prefer. And of course that golden orange color and the classic mink
blue! In terms of the chain stays, I presume those are where they are due
to the bike's position in the line-up. But I would not be surprised if,
like the Platypus (also now canti), got a touch of elongation in that zone
this go round, since they are siblings. I suspect most people want the
company's most popular model, and trust them to equip it with a suitable
chain stay length.

Not that this particularly matters--they seem to sell out of just about
every model rather quickly these days, which is a good thing, and is their
business model--similar to Acorn bags, where customers eagerly anticipate
the next batch release, and line up virtually around the block. Come to
think of it, that is how the brewery across the street from me operates,
too (except non-virtually).

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-08 Thread Will Rose
This is my first post here because I just picked up my new Sam from Riv
yesterday. Just the Frame/Fork, etc., because, unlike some others, I did
not do a good job of scheming and saving, etc. I've been wanting my first
Rivendell for quite some time, admiring them from afar (and close up up
they'd let me), lurking around here. I'm very excited to piece this bike
together from whatever nice parts I have on hand, but I might have to
exercise my patience and planning faculties on the post-purchase end of
things. I'm glad I jumped on it, though, because I'd hate to miss out on
these frames for a while and continue the wanting.

Oh, and mine's blue and a 57.

2020-11-05 Thread Leah Peterson
Wow, Mike, you really planned for this one! It felt like these Sams snuck up on
the rest of us, but not YOU. You saw them coming on the horizon months ago!
I’m so happy you got the size and color you wanted and that you are getting
your very first Rivendell. Just you wait, what a snob it will make of you.
Nothing else will be as good or as worth riding...that’s what happened to me,
anyway.

And Tracy! Good for you; you will notice there’s a difference between old and
new Riv geo. My Betty Foy was a way different ride than my long chainstay
Clementine. You’ll have two really great bikes so you can ride whatever flavor
you crave. I hope Rivendell knows Path Less Pedaled influenced your purchase -
this could be a great tool for them to grow.

Sounds like the dark gold was a hit! Can’t believe how fast these sold - faster
than the Clems, I think, and the Clems were pretty popular.

2020-11-05 Thread Roberta
Tracy and Mike,

It is so exciting to see new Riv owners. I'm new-ish (3 years) and I
couldn't believe how great the ride was when I first hopped on. I expect
you'll have the same great experience. I'm looking forward to your ride
reports.

Mike,

Did Riv send yours to Golden Pliers before the open sale or is yours being
shipped out with everyone else's? I hope it's the former and you get it by
this weekend!

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-05 Thread Jason Fuller
Funny, I bought my Hillborne a year ago today (happy birthday, Sam!), which
was my first Rivendell. I know, hard to believe since I have three now.
Anyways I actually made the jump after a couple years of idle consideration
largely because I thought the last batch was going to be the final batch
ever. Sort of funny now but nonetheless I'm glad I thought that, because
I've never owned a bike I've been as happy with as the Hillborne. I've
also put just under 2900 km on it in this first year, which is huge mileage
for me, and a good indicator of how much I like the bike. I hope to put
50,000+ km on it in my lifetime.

I'm forgetting some of what's upcoming already! I know Platypus are next
(for the plebs, not Leah) and I know Appaloosa and Gus / Susie are
somewhere on the horizon? I plan to sell my Clem Smith and XO-2 probably in
the coming months, so who knows, by the time the Charlie H Gallup rolls
(er, trots) into town I might even have a spot for it. Probably not though
haha.

Golden Pliers doesn't have it yet but last weekend said "very soon" so I'm
assuming it's being prepped/shipped with the rest at HQ, though I'm hoping

Also, I know Russ and Laura from their PDX days and am a Patreon supporter
of Path Less Pedaled. Russ' review (and subsequent purchase) of the Sam
also heavily influenced my purchase. So I agree that Riv's relationship
with PLP is a win-win.

2020-11-06 Thread Joel S
The Sam Hillborne is a shorter chainstay not racer boy influenced. There
are some of us that like the shorted chain stays. I got nervous when I
heard that many 51cm bikes were promised I believe to BlueLug and hopped on
a NEW leftover from the 2019 release that I found. Glad I did even though
the Orange would not have been my first choice. Love the blue but I have
had many Riv blue bikes. The darl gold is growing on me. Congrats to all
who were able to get the size and color you wanted, the Sam is a great
bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-06 Thread Ben Mihovk
I'm also a new Riv owner as of late September after REALLY wanting one
since about 2006. Like others, I Riv'd up a less expensive bike to scratch
the itch and it was also the PLP videos about the Sam that pushed me over
the edge. I had been saving up money from my summer job VERY aggressively
to purchase a Rivendell and had planned on waiting until my 40th birthday
in May of 2021. But Russ's video dropped in early August, I started calling
and e-mailing questions about which frame is best for me, and had an order
placed before the end of the month. Absolutely zero regrets. The quality of
the build and components (still blown away at the difference between a nice
wheel set and what comes on a complete bike from a web order company) in
conjunction with a frame that actually fits me has been an eye-opening
experience.

I was a little worried about the Sams being released and kicking myself for
going with an Atlantis just because my size was available when I was ready
to buy. However, as much as I love the color and look of the Sam, their
suggestion of 220 being a cut off for the bike makes me glad I did not
wait. I'm at their recommended weight max and I carry a good 10lbs of stuff
with me without even trying on my daily commute. Plus, Russian Sub green
and a rainbow double top tube on the 59cm blows away everything else!

I'm VERY happy to see frames getting snapped up and Rivendell staying busy.
I'm also glad I bought my bike when I did...I'm guessing turnaround times
will be a little slow with all the Sams that got snapped up. Anyone doing a
full Rivendell build and get a time quote?

Ben

Jason, mind if I ask why you're getting rid of the Clem/XO-2 so soon? Has

2020-11-06 Thread Jason Fuller
Ray,

In a word, yes - I kind of went through the whole goldilocks process trying
to find what I wanted for day-to-day rides including commuting. The
Bombadil breaks one rule--that it's not so expensive that I worry about
it--but I'm trying to let go of that fear (and double lock it!). The Clem
is a little small (I should have gone 52, but I'm pretty in-between on
sizes) and the XO-2 is good but a bit short for an upright bar setup for
me.

That said if I had the space I'd keep them, but being in an apartment (with
a partner whom doesn't want the place filled with bikes) means max 4 bikes,
and I have a mountain bike and a folding bike I don't want to part with too
(the latter is used for lock-up downtown purposes so the Bomba would never
be in really sketchy situations)

Cheers,
Jason

Jason, it’s funny how one Rivendell turns plural. My husband thought I was
crazy for wanting the expensive Betty Foy, but I swore I would take it to my
grave and never need another bike ever ever ever again! And, now there are 4
Rivendells in the garage (but only 2 are mine, and 3/4 of them are Clems 😬 So
there.)

You asked about what’s coming next... I dug this out from Rivendell’s IG:

Oh, these are my favorite stories. The long wait. Dreaming. Planning. Saving.
It’s so satisfying when that person gets their Rivendell. I love the rainbow
Atlantis; so much character.

I wonder if Riv knows that so many of you new buyers made your purchases after
Russ’ review? I’m going to email them; this is really useful information.

 1. Rivendell is making money.
 2. People are having New Bike Day.
 3. New Rivendells are arguably the best topic we have on this List.

I think it would be fun to start a thread specific to these new bikes
and see who is getting what. Maybe it’s for you. Maybe it’s a Christmas
gift for your spouse or your kiddo. Today, the dark gold and Rivendell
 blue

I don’t know what number of frames Rivendell started with, but there

 Congratulations

2020-11-18 Thread Jason Fuller
Joe P - I expect you're right. I bought an XO-1 and a Sam last year and the
XO-1 didn't last long because despite being a great bike worthy of its
accolades, it's well overshadowed by the Hillborne. It's maybe a bit less
zippy, but the small concession there is paid back tenfold in ride quality.
RBW makes a number of "all rounder" bikes today but I think the Sam is
probably my favourite blend.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-22 Thread Leah Peterson
Mike, my goodness, you DESERVE this bike; you have done it right! Could it be
any prettier? No, it could not. This bike was worth the wait. All your details
just came together and it’s perfect, down to the minutiae.

Next up: you tell us all about the rides you’re doing with this glittery,
golden Sam.

So happy for you,
Leah

That's a heck of a unique build and the best bar / chainstay wrapping I've
seen in a good while. This build will be hard to beat for the batch of
Sam's!

Mike, that's the perfect backdrop for that Sam. All the colors just look
great. Well done.

Nicely done. Have you given that Albatross a good try? I just changed mine
on one bike to Choco but it is too cold here to give them a test ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-24 Thread Jason Fuller
I like 48cm Noodles a lot on the Hillborne, to me they suit the bike
perfectly. I like Albatross bars too but for me they need to be level with
the saddle and I like the levers forward so the braking position is as far
forward as possible. I'm curious to try Billie's with a really long stem,
but the Sam isn't a long enough bike for them to work for me
