[RBW] Re: Clem L set up

2020-01-02 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for all the responses. I think I'm going to get a Mark's rack to go
with the medium basket I got for Christmas. This bike is just so much fun
to ride I can't wait to get everything dialed in.

[RBW] Re: Clem L set up

I think it really depends on how high and how heavy. To me your load looks high
and very far out front. I find with a front load that getting it closer or
locking it with the stem/handlebar can mitigate some flop. I can put 10lbs,
maybe a little more on the top of a front rack without feeling anything. Ive
also toured on an Atlantis with front panniers and a basket, and yeah first
3minutes it felt weird, but you get the rhythm of it pretty quick. (I’ve since
gone for a saddlebag, frame bag, and a front basket. So Maybe that negates my
comment.)

All that said, I’d doubt that the Clem, or most other bikes, with a massive
high front load will handle optimally.

For me "get used to it" is a place I won't go. If the thing doesn't work right,
I change it 'til it does. Rivs are not designed for heavy loads up high over
the fork.

I have a VO Polyvalent and a Rawland Drakkar, also had a Kogswell PR. All low
trail and all carried front loads very well. My Clementine doesn't really do
very well with a front load, but you get used to it. You just have to be aware
that it's going to be "floppy" (especially in low speed situations).

+1 to the wisdom of Joe. I've hauled 90+ pounds on the back of my
Hunqapillar (with it's longer wheel base, the Clem is even more adept at
this), which necessitated a slower ride but no other issues save the
expected handling issues of hauling that much weight. I now use a Burly
cargo trailer for loads over 60 lbs.

With abandon,
Patrick
