Zack, I agree with your change to an 8. I have a 9 with Silver Shifters (I don't think the shifters make a difference) and I will likely go to 8. The range is too tight and I find that I overshift...I simply don't need a nine. My experience is that 8 with friction shift works great. [RBW] Re: Convert 10 speed to 9 speed? (Silver Bar End Shifter Content)
Zack, I agree with Jim. 8 sp is great. And you don't have to lose any gear range compared to 9 sp... I run 12-32 on an XT 8 sp cassette with Ultegra bar end shifters on Thumbies (on the bar tops). Shifts extremely well with friction; lower effort and nearly silent. (When I keep the chain clean and lubed.) If a little friction trim is necessary after my initial "shift" then the controls on the bar tops make it really easy (usually just a nudge with the side of my right hand/thumb/index finger does it). I have some Silver Shifters but haven't decided if/where I'll install them yet. I bet the SS will be more enjoyable in some tactile way but I'm quite happy with the Shimanos right now. -Darren. Go with Jim T's or Steve's suggestion. Both my Rivs have 8 speed cassettes (SRAM work best) and Silver shifters (DT and BE) and they work great. The BE shifters are exceptionally pleasant to operate. --mike "who will soon be heading out for an epic ride on his Hilsen on an exceptionally sunny and hot day in Portland, OR" j. They are all on the same freehub. Just swap cassettes, check your chain length and watch your limit stops on the derailleur. You might check the archive, 'cuz we were just talking about various tricks to make that work. These things help me: Most of the newer cassettes are designed to shift, and the newer derailleurs have floating upper pulleys, which are designed to help. If the last friction shifting you did was with older, straight-toothed sprockets, you'll find that rather than overshifting and trimming, doesn't work as effectively as teasing it into gear. - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net "One Cog - Zero Excuses" L/S T-shirt - Now available http://www.cyclofiend.com/stuff Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Send In Your Photos! - Here's how: http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Convert 10 speed to 9 speed? (Silver Bar End Shifter Content)
Try the friction, and if it doesn't work, get Shimano 10-speed bar-enders. I think the friction's worth a try if you're using bar-end shifters. I remember being told that 9 wouldn't work in friction, but with bar-ends I was fine. If you have to sell the Silvers, you could probably do it on this list. -James On Apr 20, 2009, at 7:07 PM, Zack wrote: > > Hi All: > > I am currently re-evaluating the shifting setup i have on my bike.
