WOW. I just don't need another bike, but that is tempting.

Go for it Don! It would find no more appropriate home.

Is that considered a high starting bid price for a ~15 year old frame that
sold for about 1050$ new (in 1996)?

What am I missing?

[RBW] Re: Custom Riv on the 'bay

2013-08-20 Thread IanA
It does seem a little on the high side, but if it fits and is what someone
is looking for, it's not an outrageous sum. I recently paid not too much
less than that for a beautiful LongLow frame from the same era once import
fees into Canada and exchange costs were factored in (it did come with a
really nice h/s and stem though). On mine, the paint is like new (Joe
Bell) and the size is right. I might have liked more tire clearance, but
honestly, it takes true 35mm with fenders, so it's enough. I've always
been drawn to handmade bikes and this way I could afford a US made and
painted bicycle all done to the highest standard. I would be very happy
with one of the Toyo built Hilsens too, but that would have been at
considerably higher cost. I'm delighted though with my bike.

According to Westegg's inflation calculator, $1050 in 1996 equates to $1517
in 2012. But, an AHH today is US$2300 - this would be a fair comparison
to the Riv Road in terms of quality. The higher cost over inflation is
probably in part linked to a loss of strength the US dollar has experienced
in relation to various overseas currencies over the same period. * If*this
bike on eBay was in as new condition, the price would therefore equate
to about 75% of the price when it was new and about 50% of the cost of a
comparable new bike today. If the bike fits someone's needs/desires,
that's a fair range of discount, or in other words, a pretty good deal.
Its also possible that in 1996, the Riv Road was an absolute bargain at the
price, which would have a further impact on its resale value today.

I'm sure my economic theory is deeply flawed, but it's my 2c (in 1996 it
would have been my 1.38 cents).
