Kroil works wonders too. PB blaster is something else I've used that is also effective. [RBW] Re: DC Sunrise Coffee
I promise not to cross post with a local forum often, I've started a running thread on the Bike Arlington forums to make notifications for future sunrise coffee rides in the DC area so I won't clutter up the RBW page to much... http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?6597-Sunrise-Coffee-Clubp=78053#post78053 The days and locations will definitely move around, if you have a suggestion or want to arrange your own task side coffee feel free to use the thread! [RBW] Re: DC Sunrise Coffee
Tony, That looks like a great way to start the morning. As you know, I make my coffee at home and bring it in a thermos, but the brewing on site looks fun. I am also a bit pedestrian in my coffee tastes, preferring 7-11 coffee to Starbucks on most days. Hopefully you will get your hands on the Saluki soon. All the best, Erl, who is on his way to the faculty lounge for a cup o' institutional joe. Hey Tony, A coffee break during the commute? I like it! So you won the war with the stuck seatpostwhat turned the tide in that battle? [RBW] Re: DC Sunrise Coffee
Hey Howard, It was very nearly a Pyrrhic victory... but it goes in the books as a win. I ended up using 8 lbs of powdered lye, which translated into about 4 gallons or so of mixed liquid to dissolve the aluminum seatpost after I hacksawed it about an inch over the seat tube. I can't recommend the process. If you have any other means available do that first. It took about 4-5 hours and in the end I still had to use a hammer and screwdriver/chisel to get the last of the post out. Definitely a testament to steel frames as this one took a walloping. I was expecting a much more catastrophic chemical reaction but it was fairly sublte... I'll post a pic of the remnants of the offending seatpost tomorrow or Sunday. It was really amazing that even w/ 80% of the material dissolved the corrosion was strong enough to require the hammer/chisel approach for the last bit. Back to the coffee, it was such a nice interlude in the week that I'm planning another one for next week. Thinking Tuesday at the same spot - LBJ Memorial Grove. Any takers?
