[RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?
I'm a big fan of the shellac. It started out as an aesthetic tool to match the handlebars with my Honey Brooks saddle (about three coats of amber on white tape) which worked wonderfully. After riding for a while I really began to appreciate the texture and grip it provides and can't see switching to another material anytime soon. What about sweat? I've not ridden bare bars very much, but when I did, barehanded, I always sweated and always hated the slippery and "yucky" feeling. I love the look of bare Nitto-- great not-shiny look. Too bad it gets darn cold and darn hot here in the Boston area! A tropical data point: cloth tape with two or three coats of shellac only took a year to develop mold spots in northern Thailand. Just an aesthetic concern, but worth a note. I then swapped bars a couple of times (noodles to moustaches to VO porteurs) and haven't bothered retaping at all. Am quite happy with the feel of bare aluminum, with or without gloves. But then again it doesn't ever get cold here. Gernot Thailand -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?
Riding in the hot and humid land of shellac where it's readily available in all shades for about $1 for 12 ounces ready to apply, it's a no brainer for me. I don't really notice it being sticky (maybe just used to it) except a day or two after (re)application, and indeed a bit when it rains. Using it over cork. Can see it being an acquired taste, but it sure is easier for me to touch-up shellac than re-wrap. Wish it did not take me so long to learn its wonders in this application. [RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?
By no means do I mean this to be snarky, but the following statement gave me a little chuckle: " However, I successfully reused some [handlebar tape] on a kickstand where I wasn't very concerned about the aesthetics." I also like the feel of shellaced bar tape. I particularly appreciate how long the tape lasts as compared to untreated cloth tape. One thing, however, is that on really hot, humid days or after rain, the shellaced tape can feel a little sticky. No worse than cork or foam or regular tape, but worth noting. [RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?
So I just got my new AHH from Riv. I ordered it with newbaums white - and it came with what looks like a single coat of shellac. FYI - but it was fine for me, I had intended on shellac anyway. You might double check with Riv if you don't want it shellaced at all.I've got two coats of amber on my white tape right now. I think it looks and feels awesome.
