Gear story thanks for sharing! My Mom just had the procedure done and just got back on the exercise bike this week. I hope the recovery continues and you reap the benefits of the new hip for many years! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
Bob: Reads like you're well on the way to complete recovery. Good news. I had a complete hip replacement in 2007. It didn't take but a few months to get back on the bike but it took at least a year to feel 95%. Occasionally I still get a some pain in that area but it comes and goes. I'm cycling almost every day. BTW, I was 68 years old in 2007 and two months prior to the accident I cycled across the USA without an accident. The accident occurred about three miles from home. FYI, the accident was the result of a sew-up tire not glued! That mistake cost me big-time. Anyway, as I said, I'm still on the bike. Best regards. Don Genovese Montara, CA U.S.A. Rode a nice slow nine miles along the the parks on the ocean here in Honolulu. No hills, though a bit of playing in traffic (as little as possible). I felt great but it was enough for today. The Hunq was the perfect bike though: cushy ride, nothing twitchy. Tomorrow I'll start commuting again, but no worries, it's fewer miles then I just did (though I can always add them on the way home). Thanks for all the good wishes. Yet another example of Rivendell versatility. A Hunq with Big Bens for hip re-hab, perfect. Comfy, cushy, stable. Congrats on getting clearance to ride a real bike. I know all too well how the medical world has difficulty relating to patients who have a serious cycling addiction. Exercise really helps the healing process, both mentally & physically. dougP On Tuesday, June 10, 2014 1:48:59 PM UTC-7, Statrixbob wrote: > > Great news. Terrific. I know I get well testy, when I can't ride for awhile. Enjoy the moment. Your post reminds me of a funny story. I was a hospital chaplain for 13 years as well as a pretty well known biker in Vermont. A friend, and owner of quality bike sop was in a serious bicycling accident and taken to the ER, where he was told he needed immediate surgery on his hip. Asked if he would like to call is wife he replied, "Hell no, she's no good at surgery, call Claude (Dr. Nichols, head of orthopedic surgery). He's fine now. michael On Tuesday, June 10, 2014 4:48:59 PM UTC-4, Statrixbob wrote: > > Great news. Today, six weeks after my hip replacement, I've been cleared > to ride a real bicycle again. Great news. Today, six weeks after my hip replacement, I've been cleared to ride a real bicycle again. I've actually been on a stationary exercise bicycle since four days after surgery with no problem, but they didn't want me actually out and about until now. The first bike I'll ride will be the Hunq as it has nice fat Big Ben tires and gearing. I really want to hop on the Quickbeam, but am going to be sensible and give myself the option of gears I can change without dismounting. I don't expect I'll be doing any long rides (20+ miles) immediately or tacking major climbs, but at least I can get back to commuting and weekend fun. Today is the perfect day to be cleared as well. I'll get off work at 2:30 pm, go home to do laundry (it's my weekly scheduled time) while tuning up the Hunq, then head out around 5:30 pm for an hour or so of ocean front mellow riding. Sunset is 7:13 pm tonight so I've got plenty of time. Tomorrow we'll get back to biking to work. The doctor has counseled against really long rides (his idea of this and mine are at odds), climbing hard, or week long touring till the end of summer, but that's fine, I've no big bike trips planned this year. I'm hopeful I can get in a couple of short camping trips locally though. I've wanted to hop on a bike and at least go around the block before this, but for once I followed instructions. Aloha! [RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
Hey Bob, It sounds like you have a great outlook post-op. I had a double knee replacement in 2010 and have been ecstatic ever since. I did a Southern Tier ride in 2011, and although I set my goals for a rather unrealistic daily mileage, I still had an awesome time on the ride. I'm currently training for PBP and am so grateful to not have to live in the daily pain I had pre-surgery. My only advice to you is to take it slow, follow doctors orders (unless, of course, he tells you not to ride!) and enjoy yourself. > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
A buddy of mine had both hips and a shoulder replaced in the past two years. He just placed 10th in his first ever MTB race and has a much more positive outlook on life with the pain gone. Recovery can lead to great things! -J -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
Bob: Several of my buds have had various joints replaced (yea, I hang with an older crowd) and hips seem one of the least problematic and quickest recovery. I'm sure you'll be back on Rivs soon & sending us photos. PT is the key. Got a spare Brooks you can slap on the stationary? Now there's an interesting photo idea! dougP On Friday, May 2, 2014 9:42:32 PM UTC-7, Statrixbob wrote: > > As an owner of both a QB and Hunq (there's the riv content), I am > completely relieved that my left hip replacement went very well. [RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
Bob, Thanks for the update and I'm sure that the progress will have you walking around better than before. Really great to hear the stationary biking went well and that bodes well for a hasty return to the Riv's. Look forward to the "cyclomentaries" Thanks for the acknowledgement Chris. ~Hugh On Friday, May 2, 2014 9:42:32 PM UTC-7, Statrixbob wrote: > > As an owner of both a QB and Hunq (there's the riv content), I am > completely relieved that my left hip replacement went very well.
