[RBW] Re: ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-20 Thread Ron Mc
Ultegra CX70 is a great choice. I'm running a wide compact double, 42/25T,
and it's great on the big jump. The cage is shaped for maximum 48T ring
and makes sense it would be great on a triple.

We've set up plenty of CX70's on triples and wide (46/26) range doubles.
They shift nicely. Stiff, look decent, side plates that don't get in the
way. But a better bet is find an old Shimano R440 front mech, pure silver,
cheap, shift well. That's a great derailleur.

Thanks for the compliment. I doubt there is enough flex in this frame.
Oversize steel tubes. With the fenders and racks it weighs in at 48 lbs!
Here's dome pics I posted this morning.

2016-08-19 Thread Hunter Ellis
In response to Tim Gavin up above, I have had some trouble with a Suntour
FD (XC sport, not Cyclone) not having enough range to move between the
inner and outer chainring. Granted, with a different BB and stock
Chainrings I might have been able to get it to work, but that is something
to keep in mind.

[RBW] Re: ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-19 Thread Michael Hechmer
RBW sells the Shimano CX70, which was designed for cyclocross dbls. Has
anyone tried it on a triple? On my single bikes I find any derailler with
a not too long cage works pretty well. but the tandem seems to be much
more demanding. No doubt some of that comes from coordination between
shifting and relaxing pedal pressure, and some of it comes from the extra
long cables, but I suspect a third factor but haven't identified it.

When we got the tandem we initially had very poor front end shifting. I
replaced the recycled rings with new TA's, reduced the range in both front
and back, went from an XTR to an Ultegra RD. Everything worked great for 4
or 5 years, then this year I broke the Campy SR FD and replaced it with an
IRD. Now I am struggling to get it working consistently. I am not alone
in this. We do a couple of tandem rallies each year and I have noticed
that a preponderance of mechanical problems involve front end shifting.
