I’m going down to Portland this week to get fitted for my Speedvagen. :) Thanks

Hi Drw,

Of course everyone's experience varies, but my 48cm Sam Hillborne has an
ETT of 54cm, and even with swept-back handlebars the bike just felt too big
to me (I'm 5'2"). We converted it to drops for my 5'8" boyfriend and he
absolutely loves the bike -- rides it for everything.

It's great that it works for your 5'0" partner, though!

The BMC Road + looks great! Thanks for that.

That comparison site you sent is really helpful, Jonathan. Really cool site. I
wish it showed the Hilsen in a 46. I also compared my cheviot to the roadini
and the cheviot is way longer, so maybe a roadini is something to consider.

Sean, the cheviot is a 50 and does ride beautifully. We moved from seattle to a
hilly island off of seattle, so I really want more of a country road bike. I’m
having drop bars put on the cheviot and if that doesn’t work out, I’ll let you
know!

I hadn’t thought about looking at kids bikes! I’ll look into that. Thanks,
Shoji!

The BMC Road+ has some interesting geometry. If you look at the effective
reach and standover you will see that most riders ride a size WAY smaller.
Where I would normally ride a 53 or 54 the suggested size from Mike at BMC
for me would be the 47 frame. So that 44 probably rides much closer to a

2019-06-26 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Another suggestion for shorter riders: check out the high-quality
"children's" bike companies. Generally speaking, the geometry is designed
for and parts picked for shorter riders rather than some bike companies
which try to shrink existing bikes for shorter riders. (This is also what
GP argues in his design for out of the "normal size" bikes including
changing wheel sizes different reach, chain stay length, etc.)

IIRC, Islabikes no longer distributes in USA, but their Luath was highly
regarded. Maybe there are used ones out there?

Here's a small list from Rascal Rides:

Good luck!

I just measured my wife's 47 cm Atlantis. The TT actual lengh is over 51
cm, so it's likely the effective length is 52. She is 5'2" & has no room
to spare in stand over.

A couple of years ago, Rivendell found 2) 44cm Atlantis' they had forgotten
about. Give them a call on that if it may work for you. The market for
the smaller sizes was too small for them to carry them much. BTW, the
smaller Atlantis have 26" wheels which looks proportional & doesn't
constrict the geometry. If you find something close with 650B wheels, that
may work too but you'd need to check carefully.

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO Homer Hilsen size 46

2019-06-25 Thread lconley
The effective top tube length of the 47cm Roadini is 51.5 - shorter than
the 52 I see quoted for the Homer. Wheel size is 650B important for a small
bike to use smaller wheels. Headtube is 71 deg. Seat tube is 72.5 deg.
Chainstay is 45 deg. wheelbase is 1009.2mm. This bike was not mine - I am a
6', 290lb male. This was built for a 5'2" woman. My fiancee is currently on
a 60 cm Betty Foy, I am building a Medium Mountain Mixte for her also.

My computer is not letting me upload pictures at the moment so I will try
PM.

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO Homer Hilsen size 46

2019-06-25 Thread Elisabeth Sherwood
Hi again, Rachel,

If you think that the 47 Saluki would be too big for you (and assuming that
you are interested only in a road-bike set-up), then I don't think there's
anything that Rivendell makes that would work. As far as I'm aware, the
smallest effective-top-tube they've ever made in any stock bike is 52cm...
:-(

I'd go with one of the 43cm All City's (Space Horse, specifically...), or
one of the smaller Surly's. (I just hopped on a 42cm Pack Rat the other
day and, despite the for-me-rather-aggressive geometry, it felt pretty
good!)

Good luck,

[RBW] Re: ISO Homer Hilsen size 46

2019-06-25 Thread G.E.
G.E. here! :-) The Saluki sold really quickly, and I'm not sure if I still
have the contact info. His name was Eric, I remember that much, and he
seemed really happy with the bike (he did send a follow up note, as I
recall, just to let me know that he was enjoying it), so I'm not sure that
he would be willing to sell it but, I suppose one never knows.

Good luck with your hunt. The smaller Riv's can be tough to find
secondhand, but they do pop up now and again if you keep your eyes open.
The Saluki was a lovely bike, but it was too much of a duplicate for my
bike fold, which is why I ended up selling it.
