[RBW] Re: Kickstand Plate

2009-02-25 Thread Steve

As it happens, Rivendell will sell these kickstand plates to
interested inquirers. I am placing a call to Mark today. Many
thanks, Grant and crew!

[RBW] Re: Kickstand Plate

2009-02-25 Thread fenderbender

These larger kickstand mounts are a very good idea! I'm surprised that
neither the producer or bike manufacturers don't insist on them or
offer some bolt on type as extras. Most modern bike frames don't have
the required tube thickness to cope with the forces of a loaded bike
pushing down on that small area. The Pletscher ESGE double leg
kickstand I used on a MTB-tourer during a Singapore to China trip
deformed the tubes so much they cracked. I was fortunate enough to
notice it while still in Thailand and was able to source a all new
frame.

Nice. I like the green one with black fenders. Reminds me of Gordon
Stam's Rom. Where did he ever go off to? He was on the old list.

We did some riding together in Colorado on BTC 2006. There were 6
Rivendells on that tour (out of 2200 total). Fun times.

[RBW] Re: Kickstand Plate

2009-02-23 Thread Bill M.

Steve,

I'm no frame builder, but...

If you're up to building a frame, it shouldn't be that hard to fab a
plate. You could use 4130, but I'd think low carbon steel would be
strong enough for a kickstand mount and would be cheaper and easier to
work with. The KS plate on my Kogswell P/R is 0.080" thick (i just
went out and measured it) but is broken down on the front and rear
edges to stiffen it. That would be hard to do without a break, so I'd
maybe go to 3/32" stock for a bit more strength. Cut / grind / file a
piece to fit your stays, bend up a tab for the fender mount, drill for
the fender and kickstand, and braze or weld it on. Simple, right?

If you're using horizontal dropouts, be sure to leave enough room to
get the wheel in and out with a tire on it. The plate will take up
more room than a tubular bridge. If you can get a socket head bolt to
fit the KS, that might let you sneak the plate a little further
forward (no need to leave room between the stays for a socket or box
wrench).

Post photos when you're done!

Bill

I had assumed he was building the frame -
not a lot listed out there, but a couple 'o leads, if that's the case:

You can see some detailed images on the A. Homer Hilsen page here -

I'd expect you should give them a call, though. Not sure if they adapted an
existing design or had it done. Such things exist, even if Riv doesn't sell
them, so you might contact the company that sold the tubing.

best of luck!

[RBW] Re: Kickstand Plate

2009-02-23 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery

Steve: I'm not aware of kickstand plates that are sold for
retrofitting to frames.

Seth: There are different kickstands on the market. Some are made to
work with a built-in kickstand plate, and others have the cross-piece.
You'll likely need a different bolt to use one without the cross-
piece.

This reminds me of something. My atlantis has the kickstand plate on
it. Is there any need for the cross piece of the kickstand at all?
