[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-25 Thread Dan A
I had a fenderbot and was not impressed. Not very bright at all. Nowhere
close to my PDW radbot 1000 or a standard Planet Bike Superflash.

It is fantastic. It can either be 'on' (steady on, no flash), or
'pulse' which does not flash, but rather 'glows' on and off. It comes with
the standard seat post/tube strap-mount, and has an easy
push-button-adjustment to affect its angle. I've pondered inverting it and
mounting it 'hack-style' to my rear fender, but have yet to make that a

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-25 Thread Dennis Hogan
Hi Peter
I also have this light and love it (I still have a dyno powered tail light
as well). I would offer the caution that I have had it fall off its
mounting, be it a leather or fabric loop, several times. Even if I have
cinched it down as tight as possible with the mount. I have taken to using
a zip tie to secure it. It is not cheap and I would hate to lose such an
investment.

2014-09-25 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Glad to see you move past the lurking stage!!!

Looks like a good idea. I've thought bout trying to do something similar
with the Superflash, but Shugga looks like it lends itself to that a lot
more. I'm going to try the Pixeo but if it isn't bright enough, this is an
option.

Thanks!

David,
I have an earlier version of this:
http://www.lightandmotion.com/choose-your-light/vis-180/vis-180-brown-shugga
It is fantastic. It can either be 'on' (steady on, no flash), or 'pulse'
which does not flash, but rather 'glows' on and off. It comes with the
standard seat post/tube strap-mount, and has an easy push-button-adjustment
to affect its angle. I've pondered inverting it and mounting it
'hack-style' to my rear fender, but have yet to make that a reality. I
don't think it would be too difficult though, and pass this idea to someone
who might be a little more pro-active.

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-25 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
I happened to burn one out during dynamo testing--I had the whole lighting
system wired up in parallel for easier cable runs, then switched off the
headlight, so the Pixeo got all the power of a dynohub. It was gone. One
of the nicest things about getting a new one was being able to unscrew just
the lens/reflector of the old one and installing the new lens reflector
(that's where all the circuitry is) without having to take the whole thing
off the fender.

My wife has the battery powered Pixeo on her bike, and it's been great!
Bright LED with a sharp center focus but adequate side emission. Really
nice auto-on and standlight feature means she never turns it on or off, it
just comes on when needed. She hasn't replaced the battery in three years.

The ONLY thing I can find fault with it is with the quality of the battery
contacts, which lungimsam pointed out need tweaking. They seem to be
susceptible to moisture and corrosion, and bending them to make them
contact with more pressure seems to fix it.

The Pixeo is pretty good, definitely bright enough, but has a weak point on
the inside, where the threaded plate is retained by plastic channels. If
you tighten beyond snug, the plate rounds out the channels and spins
freely. Then you have to disassemble the light and hold the plate manually
to get it tight again. Small thing, but likely enough to happen. Otherwise,
fine light.

2014-09-24 Thread ted
I have a Spanninga Pixio Xba I am planning to put on my SimpleOne's fender.
I also have a PDW Radbot 1k and a dyno B&M TopLight Line.
The Radbot 1K is very bright on axis, but is a single small spot of
brightness. The Pixio is fairly bright though not as bright as the Radbot,
and also seems to be pretty much a dot when viewed from any distance. I
like the way the linetec creates a larger illuminated area. I think the
reflector portion of the Radbot is larger than the one on the Pixio, and
the TopLight's is even larger.

If you have a place to mount it, you might consider the battery version of
the TopLight (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/lt009.htm)

Re: [RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-24 Thread cyclotourist
I was looking at the dynamo powered one, but not a fan of the wiring across
the bike. The AAA rears typically last a while w/ rechargeable, so not
worried about that, just the brightness.
Thanks!

I believe I have had good luck with the Spanninga Pixeo. It is my sole active
illumination to the rear, though I have reflective tape, the Pixeo's reflector,
and an additional reflector on the rear rack.

The Pixeo (dynamo version) is very bright--as bright IMO as some headlights
I've used, but more distributed.

It's best on dark roads, as others have observed. But that's true for any
powered light.

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-24 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
The reviews for the 'Bot aren't very exciting, but based on PDW's
reputation, I was wondering if there was any supportive views. I have the
Superflash now and it works fine, just trying to move to a fender mount
seeing as I have full-time fenders.

Are there any other options out there for fender mounted lights? I only run
lights on constant, so wanting to compare in that mode.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-24 Thread dailyrandonneur
I have the Spanniga. It is somewhat basic, you're not getting a super deal
at $15.

We have it on the tandem fender as a spare to back up the Secula Plus
generator taillight (which is very bright) on our chainstay.

The Spanniga is OK on dark roads, so-so in city riding. Switch is a little
wonky. Our first unit wouldn't turn on unless the two halves --
battery-holding base, LED/reflector/cover upper -- were aligned just so;
the second works ok.

The reviews on the Fenderbot were middling and in the LBS it looked about
as bright as the Spanniga, though sturdier. I bought a Radbot 1000 which is
much brighter, but not intended for fender mounting.

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-24 Thread lungimsam
Spanninga:

Good - bright and makes big light. Steady only. Reflector included in the
design.
I don't like flashing lights. Why? Last night I saw a cyclist (while I was
driving a car) with forward and rear flashing lights, and they made it hard
to zero in on where he was. He could have been anywhere in a 6 foot area.
Couldn't pinpoint placement of the bike as flashing lights had my vision
disoriented. Very confusing. Just *light-black-light-black*, etc. as they
flashed in the night.

Not bad, but could be better - had to bend the battery contacts upon
installing new batteries to get it to work again. Works fine now. No biggie.
