Lost:

   - Hats. A bunch of hats that I used to tuck into my back pocket before I
got a front rack. So many good hats lost forever. Can't believe it took me
so long to learn my lesson.
   - My favorite merino wool long sleeve. Discovered it was gone within 10
minutes, but by the time I got back it was gone.
   - Wallet -- Someone was nice enough to drop it back in my mailbox after
   a few days. Phew!

Found:

   - Pocket knife with a 4" or 5" blade. It was open and sitting in the
middle of the bike lane. I used it all the time until I accidentally left
it in my carry on at the airport. Where does all that stuff end up anyway?
   - $20 bill
   - Jannd seat dangle bag with patch kit goodies
   - Aviator sunglasses in surprisingly good shape

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-11 Thread R. Alexis
I have found plenty of stuff riding, walking and driving over the years.
While riding I have found various tools. Of note, a long, non rachet socket
wrench. Found a flip cell phone once on a walk during lunch. The battery
was dead. Finally charged it and called the best number on it to get it
back to the owner. The mother of the owner retrieved it from me a day
later. It was her son's phone and was not looking forward to paying to
replace it. Found a wallet outside a reception venue on another lunch walk.
Had cash, CC cards and the usual item, including a conceal and carry
license. Looked over the parking lot to see if there was a fire arm also in
the lot. Got a hold of the owner with the help of my girlfriend via the
insurance card. Got the card and wallet back to the owner the next or a
couple days later on my way to work.

I pass on stuff I cannot use or donate it. A cooler I found was passed on
to some friends to haul some meat back home on a car trip. I told them to
just pass it along or donate it to Goodwill.

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-04 Thread dstein
I've lost several frame pumps (user error I'm sure). I also have several
gloves missing their pair, somehow it ends up always being the same side so
I can't make a pair out of the three lost gloves I have.

Butone day I was riding my Jones in China Camp in the Bay Area. I
noticed towards the end of the ride on a paved section that my handlebar
bag was open. Checked and my keys were in there, but not my wallet. It was
an Ocean Air wallet that I really liked and is not easily replaceable
depending on their stock, and I hadn't had it for very long. I was pissed.
I don't think much money was in there, and credit cards were easily
replaceable, but I wasn't looking forward to a trip to the DMV and dealing
with a replacing a few other things I had, not to mention the wallet. My
riding buddies treated me beer and a sandwich after.

I woke up the next day and for some reason thought to check the mailbox on
a Sunday morning for my wallet, and sure enough it was there. Some kind
stranger found my wallet on the trail and drove all the way from China Camp
to Oakland to drop it off in the mailbox (thankfully my license had my
current address).

You'd think I learned my lesson, but just last week I was riding and
noticed my bag was open, then saw my phone pop right out of it, luckily I
saw it and was able to grab it, but not before almost causing a trail
accident from stopping so suddenly.. So if anyone wants some free shit,
just follow me on the trail.

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-04 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, my lost and found is not nearly as romantic...but sure fits the bill.

On one of my annual rides to the in-laws for thanksgiving dinner, I lost my
pocket knife. Most years, we've had snow, but it rarely sticks around
because we often get the 60 degree days mixed in. This particular year
though, we had a couple good dumps and there was plenty piled up. Right in
the middle of a corner I heard something hit the ground and bounce a couple
times. It took a minute for me to take stock and I could only surmise my
15+ year old Spyderco Delica had worked out of my pocket, dropped and
skipped off the trail into the snow. I searched for a good 30 minutes till
my fingers were numb and gave up.

I ride to the inlaws several times a year, and every time I went through
that corner, I slowed down like I was expecting it to just be sitting
there. TWO years later, I was on my way back for another carb fest but this
time the weather was nice, I was running early, and decided to stop and
brew up coffee in my fateful turn. While I drank my cuppa, I paced back and
forth through the brush on the sides of the trail again to no avail. So
giving up again, I crossed to the other side of the trail that would come
up the "inside" of the turn to walk back. And right there, in the middle of
the turn, not 4ft off the trial, I spotted a glint of metal. No possible
way I thought. I wear my knife in my right pocket, and this was a left
turn...if it came out, it would surely have bounced off to the right?! I
pushed back the tall weeds, and right there was my Spyderco. I just stood
there looking at it, my mind trying to come up with some alternate
explanation. It must be someone elses, I'm on prank tv, a squirrel moved
it...what are the odds I thought. I reached down, picked it up, and looked
at the clip. The old Delicas' clip was molded into the scales and the
patent info raised on it. Mine was worn nearly smooth, but in the small
recesses left, there was yellow paint imbedded from a fall and skid on some
curb paint. I licked my thumb and wiped off the dirt, and behold the
lo...no question, this was MY knife. I lovingly and securely stashed it
inside my swift rando bag and carried on to a bizarrely thankful
thanksgiving. That night after returning home, I cleaned, sharpened, and
oiled it and finally scratched that itch in the back of my mind.

The wild thing is, this was along one of, if not THE most heavily used
trails in colorado. The Cherry Creek Trail. I think I was more in shock
someone else hadn't found it. Anyway, I still have it, and it's journey has
made it even more endearing to me.

permanent single speed for trail riding. Cutting off the hanger off the
rear dropout was cathartic. At the time, no such thing as a fixie. That
would come much much later. I remember people staring at it like it was
from another planet. Fast forward to 1993. Now set up with a Campy 165
track crankset, Sugino drillium ring, Specialized hubs laced to MA40s,
Michelin Hi Lite Cross tires, NR seatpost, Avocet touring saddle,
Specialized mountain stem with Scott AT2 bars, ( the Nitto dirt drop stem
and albatross bars pictured came later) front 1st Generation Dura Ace
brake. I rode the hell out of this bike. But enough about the bike...

Every month on the night of a full moon, the local rail-trail (NCR Trail
north of Baltimore) sponsored a full moon ride. 20 or so people would show
up and ride five miles up the trail to a waterfall, hang out for a bit,
then ride back. I did it a few times. I August of that year I showed up as
usual, waiting for people to sign in. The organizer reminded people that a
helmet was required, and that's when I noticed her - looking a bit out of
place, and obviously no helmet. As luck would have it, I had just bought a
new one - a Specialized foam with the red and white stretch-fabriuc cover.
I was still wearing the Bell V1 Pro I had been using for years, and the new
one was in the trunk, so I offered it to her. Nothing more than a good
deed.

The ride got underway, and we made the five mile jaunt to the falls as a
stretched out pack. I exchanged pleasantries with my new helmet buddy at
the turnaround and we talked a bit as we rode back. No mention of
relationship status or anything like that. Just small talk on a pleasant
night. We got back to the starting point, and proceeded to load up the
bikes. Turns out she was with her sister, and I helped them strap their
bikes on a trunk rack, and she gave me the helmet back with a quick thanks
and they drove off.

I drove off too, but a couple miles up the road it hit me hard: "I would
like to see this woman again." With no idea who she was, and very little
hope, I turned around and made my way back to the starting point - a
restored train station where we all signed in. Not sure what I was
expecting to find, but I had to take a shot. I have never felt that way or
done something like that ever. The guy with the sign-in sheet was locking
up, and I asked if I could see the list. For some reason he said sure, no
problem. We had not exchanged names, so my only clue was that she was
riding with here sister. Maybe I'd find two names alike?

The only two women with the same last name was my only clue now. No phone
number. Nothing but a name. In the pre-google era that meant I would have
to hit the white pages. The next day I did just that. No planning, just the
same odd feeling that I wanted to see her again. Not sure how many numbers
I dialed, two or three I guess, until a young girl answered the phone. On a
whim, I asked the girl if her Mom had been on a bike ride the night before,
and she immediately yelled to her mom that some guy from the ride was on
the phone.

Imagine if you were her; knowing that no personal information had been
shared and now someone had found her and wanted to talk! She reminds me
constantly how weird that was. In this day and age she might have hung up
and called the police. I wouldn't blame her. When she got on the line I
apologized for the surprise call and told her how I had managed to find
her. I doubt she bought all that. Regardless, I asked if she would like to
do the same ride the following Sunday. Public place and all, I thought she
would feel safe enough to do that. I was right - she agreed.

The next Sunday, I arrived early. Still not sure what I was in for. Making
assumptions about why she would agree to see me again. Still not sure what
I was doing. I was not really looking for love at the time. I had a 12-year
old son, and a relationship was the last thing on my mind. But it was that
last thing that started to grow stronger that day. I saw a familiar car in
the distance, with a familiar trunk rack. As it turned into the parking
lot, one more familar thing: her sister! She tells the story differently,
but one thing is probably true, the look on my face was unforgettable!

Here I was thinking I would share a nice Sunday morning with someone I'd
like to get to know better, and here she was with a chaperone! After my
shock wore off we saddled up and made the ride to the falls. Had a nice
chat with both of them. Agreed to do it again sometime. We have.

Lost my keys on a ride once. They were clipped to my saddle bag. I remember
blasting down a rough trail thinking how it was so quiet... Didn't realize
they had unclipped themselves in all the commotion. Someone called me the
next morning as I was driving back to the trail to search. I keep a dog tag
with my name and number on my keys. A trail runner had picked them up. I
met him in a parking lot near by and gave him 20$. Well worth it.

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-30 Thread ascpgh
I lost my keys on the way home a few years ago on a blustery fall night,
not having shoved them deep enough into my pocket. At my front door, just
having thought how lucky I was not to suffer more in the evolved weather
since I didn't anticipate being so late or out after a front passed, and my
wife out of town, I reached for and didn't find my keys.

I started my search by giving myself a bye on the ride back to work since I
was in the opposite lane. I started at the bike rack I use and began my
slow trip home being vigilant to both traffic and for my keys and luckily I
found them in the first big intersection where there was more lighting but
they'd been under a good number of tires and mostly destroyed. One of the
two house keys was intact enough to work. Extras for the locks I leave on
the rack at work appreciated.

in August I trashed my rear wheel on a pothole while hurrying to meet a
friend and ride to the start of a local open streets event, my Riv water
bottle shot out while I was busy trying to get out of a real tank-slapper
speed wobble and away from the parked cars around the curve. Tire and wheel
functionally intact, I pedaled on.

Three hours later, near the far end of the event and after taking a break
for brunch at a restaurant along the route, a guy (who I'd never met) walks
up to us and hands me my bottle. He said "I knew I'd see you out here at
some point and I could give this back". Wow. That's one way your stuff
comes back!

Thanks be to persistent people who care and solid dumb luck.

Well fancy this. I did a dirt road ride yesterday and lost my car key. I

stretch of road and no other way, so I treated myself. Also took my new to

thought, hmmm, let me put the key in a super safe place. So I zipped them
into a very shallow pocket on top of the camera bagAt the first photo
stop, I mistakenly unzipped the pocket with the key and never zipped it
backended up riding the bad stretch of road back home, had to break
into my apartment. A good friend took me on a car ride this a.m. to
backtrack, but no luck. Heading to Subaru dealer tomorrow morning. The good
news is I got a few nice shots, and I'll post a link to those in a new

I had my cell phone pop out of the holder I'd secured in my basket. I was
crossing a very busy road with three lanes of traffic in each direction so
I scampered across the street without my phone and watched 50 cars or so
miss it before a truck came along and squished it like a bug.

I found a strange looking case on the side of a road once. The device
inside turned out to be a muzzle velocity meter for a paint ball gun. I
found a large set of keys in an area where semi trucks unload so I turned
it in to the guard shack. I also found a fairly large combination wrench
but it was made in China and I didn't feel like carrying it for the rest of
my journey.

I have also wondered what sort of things others have found. It's good to
have a basket or a bag just in case you find a treasure.
