[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-23 Thread Leaf Slayer
So I sold off my Ogre and am now down to my Evasion and Big Dummy. I ended
up mounting the Crust Towel Rack on my Evasion. So far so good. As for
getting an Atlantis? I think I've ruled out a Romanceur. Still dreaming
about an Atlantis and may end up going for it but for now I'm going to keep
the quiver at 2. That's what I've wanted for a long time. The BD will
eventually go. The Crust really is a super capable all-rounder and I may
invest in a dyno hub for it. I have a Fab's Chest arriving today. For now
the Atlantis will go on the back burner.

I should add that the Black Mountain Cycles MCD had been a consideration
but there's some sizing issues with that bike for me.

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-16 Thread Lynn Haas
In answer to questions:

The stem is Nitto, it's what Riv put on it. I'll probably pull it in favor
of something with a removable faceplate at some point. I'd prefer to have
short reach/shallow drop bars but they won't slide through that
non-removable faceplate.

Tires are Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. Worth every last penny.

I ordered the bike in October 2017, and it arrived in August 2018, so
that's where I got the fork. I'm still looking for the perfect rack. My old
bike - gone to an excellent home - was a Surly LHT, and I always ran a
Tubus Tara up front. I liked the stability I got from the low-rider (see
about re: vision). I still have the Tara and might do some experimental
bending to see if it will work on the P-Quod. I'm not planning any touring
until fall so I've got time.

My coworker, who has never read Moby Dick, thinks it's spelled P-Quod and I
might keep his spelling.

Lynn, that’s a nice looking Atlantis if I do say so myself! What length stem
are you running? And where in the world did you get an Atlantis fork with the
crown-top mounts? I love my Atlantis, but the one thing I’d change about it
would be to put on a fork with those mounts. Cheers,

It's a 53cm MUSA, so a slightly shorter wheelbase, but mine has been great
with drop bars. I'm not particularly confident on gravel (I have some
vision problems) and this is the best of any bike I've ridden on local
crushed stone trails. It took a bit to get everything dialed in, but that
was mostly due to needing a lot less setback on my seatpost - I had to
switch to a zero-setback.

It looks nice enough that when I took it to the LBS for a tuneup, the
mechanic couldn't find it in the shop because the owner had it out in the
backyard taking glamour shots. He put it on Instagram.

I have a MUSA atlantis, but from riggght before they announced MIT
ones, so i assume its really similar minus the xl stays. I had drops on an
9cm stem and it was fine, but i bought the analog 30mm stem and cowchippers
and ive never been so comfortable on handlebars in all positions on and
off. since i made the cowchipper and 30mm stem swap at the same time, i
don't really know if im benefitting from both or one variable.

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-13 Thread Brett Callahan
I'm running my 59 with a Nitto / Fairweather bar that is effectively a 46
cm noodle with less drop. I love the bike but I've had a hard time dialing
in bars. This seems to be a keeper. I previously tried flat bars which
didn't agree with my wrists, the billie bar, which just had too
muuuch flex, and noodles and v-brake levers from Tektro that gave me
too much reach even with a short stem. Since making the change to cantis
and a more compact drop, I'm pretty happy with my setup. The bike felt
great with flats on dirt, and it feels great with drops on pavement. I'm
hoping to get it out on some dirt as currently built this weekend.

Bottom line, if you like the bike and you want to run drops, I vote go for
it. I think you'll find that the aesthetic funk will fade quickly!
