Yup. Buncha Suntour XC Pro parts on it. The crank is indeed beautiful, but a
triple is overkill for me here in Chicago. Even on rides far out of the city,
there is really no need for more than a single chainring setup with a wide
range freewheel/cassette. Feeling like my final build will head in this
direction.

2014-03-20 Thread George Schick
Agree with the others, that is a nice bike. LIving here in the Chicago
area I also agree with your statement about the triple - it is way
overkill. A lot of the folks on blogs like this one live in very hilly or
even mountainous terrain where I could see the triple as necessary, but
around here the steepest climbs are probably those along the Fox River
valley and they're maybe 1/4 mile long at the most with maybe a max 9%-12%
grade.

I'm curious about your Noodle bar comment, too. I've ridden with Noodles
on one of my bikes for about 8 years now and although I like the fact that
I can position the brake levers in such a way that the upper bend on the
bars is close to being even with the brake hoods. But I do not care too
much for the "randonneur" bend along the top flats. After riding for a
while that slight upward bend seems to bother my wrists. Wonder if you've
had a similar experience.

I don't like the downward bend on tops and into the flats. Feels like my
hands could slip off if I don't grip tightly, which I'd like to be able to
have a looser grip mostly.
I like traditional rando bars that bend up and seem to fit my palm better.
I have Nitto B132 and B136s that I use. I'm also riding the 44cm VO Course
bar, slightly wider version than the GB Maes Parallel offerings, and am
very happy with their room ramps and long drops.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day

2014-03-28 Thread Mike Schiller
that bike came out great Anne, I've been trying to decide between a 29+
bike and a Pugsley myself. The Krampus and others with 3" tires are great
trail bikes.
It should be a blast to ride and great for backcountry touring.

fyi... I saw a bunch of frames at Curtis Inglis's shop having the splitter
put in... maybe yours was one?

2014-03-28 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I love the belt concept, except it can't be broken. The industry needs to
lean on Gates to develop a 'breakable' belt... why must this be left to the
frame mfrs to design breakable (or raised chainstay) frames?

Andrew,

This VO seatpost is in the mail to me and should be here in a couple
of days. The set back issue is a common one and I'm dealing with it on
my Casseroll right now.

If I like it I'll order another one for the XO-1 and Atlantis.

They also have a Nitto Crystal Fellow for a little more that looks
similar in set back.

Nice bike. Mitch

[RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-16 Thread Earl Grey
Re. Tektro 720s: I have them on my Sam, and I think they are great.
Easy to set up, good modulation, good stopping power; they are awesome
at the price. If all you did was technical singletrack downhill, you
might want something with more mechanical advantage for less hand
strain after hours of braking, but for an all-rounder, they are
perfect. Functionally as good as my Campy high profiles, easier to set
up, but not as jewel-like, though perfectly fine looking, except for
the prominent and ugly-ish Tektro logo. :)

I have the VO seatpost on my 20 year old beater that needed more
setback with a Brooks, and it's a beautiful post that works great.
Would like to get a Nitto at some point, but I think this one has more
setback than any of the Nittos except the lugged "Wayback".

[RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-16 Thread William
Velo Orange has a nice $48 seatpost that they specifically made for
Brooks setback.

I agree with your assessment of the Tektro's being kinda wimpy, esp in
the rear. I was going to experiment with a different pad on my orange
56cm Sam. Otherwise, I have a set of Paul's I might put on it
instead.

[RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-17 Thread EricP
A cheaper seatpost with decent setback is the Kalloy Uno SP-267. Am
using one on my non-Riv touring bike. Tougher to find in silver, but
Universal has them in stock. (Probably an LBS could order it too.)
http://tinyurl.com/ycf3u44

Have also been using the Tektro 720's on my Hillborne since the first
build. Have had no problems with stopping issues. Besides pad
changing, might want to experiment with the height of the straddle
cable.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day!

2024-07-11 Thread ascpgh
I love the details. When you look deeper you see all the things that were
deliberate choices and each of them has a reason behind why that part
instead of another. It's an evolution of your cycling in its details.

I said the same to Leah when she unveiled her little pony. Building a bike
is telling a story about your path in bicycling. Your experiences shaped
the choices and it's rewarding when you look at a part and it triggers all
the memories of previous parts and bikes and rides that brought you to this
component.

2016-01-26 Thread LeahFoy
I love new bike stories! Thanks for posting this one. This Bleriot will not be
a garage queen, it's going to be used every single day just as Grant intended -
how wonderful! And after a week on his Bleriot, Dan will believe that no other
bike will do. I am just a bit envious of both Dan's excitement and the fact
that Dan lives somewhere that his bike can be used for most/all of his
transportation needs.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day!

2016-01-26 Thread dougP
Dan:

Welcome to the group & congratulations on getting such a perfect bike.
It's so wonderful when any bike can transition from one rider to another, &
especially such a win-win-win (I'm counting Amit's involvement as a win
too!)

Amit:

What a great story & how satisfying to be able to connect someone who needs
a bike with someone who has one for them. I'm sure Eric is pleased that
it's going to a good home. I especially love the third paragraph where you
describe the ride & the smile like he wasn't sure what just happened. My
wife had the same reaction the first time she rode her Atlantis. At 5'-2"
not much fits her, and she was test riding just to humor me. 5 minutes &
she came back with big eyes & said "I've got have this bike...now!".
Rivendell's just have that magic. Amit, you are now officially a
"Rivendell Enabler", bringing joy to the bicycling world.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day!

2016-01-27 Thread Daniel Woods
Thanks for the amazing introduction, Amit. And thank you Eric for the
amazing wheels!!!

The Bleriot is a game changer. It really is. Having said that, I absolutely
love my Motobecane and I intend to keep it.

My being forced into cycling as part of my move out here to the West Coast
has undoubtedly changed my life for the better. 3 years later and 20 lbs
lighter I am a full-fledged ride-aholic.

It is an incredible feeling to have such a sweet ride. Thank you all for
your warm reception. I am so grateful to be part of this club!

Amit, I should remind you that this is now the second time you've had a

 Hi Everyone!

Here's a cheerful story. Please give a warm welcome to my dear friend
 Dan Woods!

Dan first moved to California and sold his car 3 years back - so he's
been a full time bicycle commuter and loves to ride in general. He
currently rides an aluminum frame "Motobecane" that's too big for him, a
hand-me-down that was originally purchased on BikesDirect.com. He loves
 his
bicycle dearly, despite problems with everything ranging from brakes,
crankset, headset, handlebars, brakes and shifters, etc. We did a complete
overhaul and replaced everything on his bike 6 months ago.

A few days ago I saw the message re: Bleriot for Sale posted by Eric
Norris. I contacted Eric on behalf of Dan and asked him if the bicycle was
still available, worked out pricing and pitched the idea to Dan, who was
 all for it.

Dan and I drove to Eric's house yesterday to check out the Bleriot. It
was the first time Dan had ridden a quality bicycle. He pushed off, rode a
while and returned with a smile on his face like he wasn't sure what just
happened - was he supposed to feel this good on a bicycle? Was this too
good to be true? Should he even be smiling or take this moment for
reflection and be serious? It was awkward. And joyous to behold.

While Dan was riding this bicycle it looked like the bike and him were
made for each other - it was BANG ON PERFECT. Wow. We made a few quick
adjustments to the saddle and handlebar height, took a tour of Eric's
incredible bicycle collection (phew, maybe the nicest bicycles I've ever
seen in one place!), settled on payment and drove back. I was going to
 drop
Dan off to his apartment but he asked if we could go back to my house so
 he
could ride home. I obliged, gladly.

After a few fender adjustments, reinflating the rear tire and a quick
seat post adjustment he was on his way.

Dan's text messages to me over the last 12 hours are:

"Amazing#!!!:%/6/=%/" "So fast. So smooth" "Serious style"

I asked him if he was going to sleep with his bicycle and he told me
 "That's None of Your Business!"

Dan rode his bicycle to work this morning, and instead of locking it
outside his building like he normally does the Bleriot is in his cubical
with him. He sent me a picture.

He says this bicycle is a blessing and that he loves it.

Anyway, I just wanted to take a few moments to introduce Dan to the
Rivendell Owners Bunch, congratulate him on his new ride and wish him a
lifetime of safe, happy and amazing adventures riding his new bicycle!

 Pictures to prove it happened:

[RBW] Re: NEW BIKE DAY!

2017-01-02 Thread Kellie
Hi Bill: pedals are from VP Components; I think they sell them at
Rivendell, but you can get them many places. For those that are interested,
the build is:
Dia-Compe levers
SR One-at-a-Time shifters (love them, super crisp shifting and the
ratcheting gives lots of feedback) mounted inside
Nitto Choco handlebar
Paul's neo-retro brakes (love all Paul's brakes)
Velocity Cliffhanger rims (both tire and rim tubeless ready for any desert
adventure)
Schwalbe Thunder Burt tires. Love them even more than the RockNRoads,
quieter on street
The rest is pretty standard Riv build except I have to say I LOVE THE ALTUS
RD; great shifting paired with the SR. Not mounted yet in this photo, Nitto
R14 rear rack, Supernova head and rear light, and hopefully a Saddlesack to
come.

[RBW] Re: new bike day!!

2018-07-25 Thread Adam Leibow
Joe - these tires are amazing, though I am much more careful around glass
cause they have 0 thickness or protective layer. That being said my GF has
the rat trap passes and rides everything I do and barely flats, if ever.
And actually the bullmooses are growing on me, though they still feel
slightly stretched forward.

Mike - The Hunqapillar is an amazing bike, & I'll buy another one some day.
I sold it cause I always felt it a bit small, and had come to appreciate
the more upright, big-frame feel of my Cheviot, even offroad. The Clem
affords even more standover, tire clearance, and frame flex than the
Cheviot (all good for offroad), and I also made a couple hundred bucks
selling the Hunq and buying a Clem. That's it in a nutshell.

I love the black rims and the tires. I have about 200 miles on a set and they
are proving to be a great 700c version of the RTPs. I also was worried about
the RTPs and flats but i have at least 2000 miles on a set with only one flat.
The 700c x 55s seem to me to have even more rubber.

Enjoy the great build!

Congratulations, Adam. I wouldn’t worry too much about those Compass tires.
Maybe I’ve been lucky but I’ve been riding Barlow Pass ELs for over 2 years
without a flat. Like you, I started riding them very timidly. But, I was
enjoying the ride so much that I started riding them everywhere. I probably
ride gravel 25% of the time on them and they’ve performed brilliantly. Enjoy
the ride. I bet both the bike and the tires can take it.

thanks for the words everybody!

Joe, the way Compass names their tires, one name=one size, so antelope
hill=700cx55, switchback hill=650bx48, rat trap pass=26"x2.3, etc etc.
there are plenty of 650b options.

Justin, go for it. only perceivable difference is long wheelbase versus
shorter wheelbase, no?

Lester, I have the Billie bars on my Sam Hillborne and I've thought about
getting Wavie bars for it (when they come out), and putting the Billie bars
on this. We'll see what happens.
