[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

2018-10-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I see that now -- I didn't bother to click the link because I'd just to
Crust in August and Matt didn't mention a new rack coming (he's sneaky like
that, I guess). That one is interesting but wouldn't have worked for me
anyway as I'm running brazed on CP rim brakes and they tend to block
forward access to the center hole on the crown.

The rack that Keith linked to is a new rack that Crust is offering. Not the
one with lowrider attachments.

2018-10-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like that Crust Rack exactly because it doesn't have a diving board (and
I like the platform size for the basket, too). The Crust works off a pretty
smart "truss" or bracket that attaches to the center hole on a fork crown.
That bracket is quite beefy and spreads the load outward similar to a fork
with attachment points on top of the crown on either side of the head tube.
I was able to run the bracket behind a set of Mafac Raids, even. It's a
solid rack but not overly heavy -- the stainless steel struts are heavy
gauge hollow tubing with nicely welded attachment points -- and the
hardware is top notch. The platform has plenty of attachment points as well
for lights and/or lowrider racks. And the 4 struts ought to make anyone
paranoid about rack failure feel safe, too. I'm not totally crazy about the
industrial / "erector set" aesthetic overall but it works with the build
style of the particular bike I have it on now.

[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

2018-10-09 Thread The Snag
The description says (in classic translated english) that the platform is
the same as the potluck rack, which is 200mm x 200mm. Light mounts would
have been nice. I'm really tempted to pick one of these up. I also have a
Rawland demi porteur which I like a lot, but the in-between platform size
on the Sim Works seems great.

2018-10-09 Thread Jon BALER
I really was excited when I first saw this, love the adjustable struts.
Their potluck rack was cool, but wasn't tall enough for large 700C tires.
I have the Rawland demi porteur rack, and hate that their is no front-back
adjustment (except using a spacer/long bolt)

No light mounts?
If it is intended to support handlebar bags, why doesn't it have a
tombstone rear? (See disclaimer in link below)
2 kg max weight
No platform dimensions provided?
Why not use the upper mounting points available on the disc trucker in the
photo (like some Riv's have)

Leroy - Hard to tell from the pictures but I'd place money on the
alternative 4 legged mount like a Mark's rack (I can't see any reason why
not, I'm sure you can cut the mid-fork stays to make the rack level w/ the
fork crown bolts.

I don't know much about SimWorks, are these super desirable limited runs?
I'm still waiting to see what Rivendell does as they mentioned they are
developing something new in light of Nitto's recent lack of support on
their existing racks.

[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

2018-10-06 Thread LeRoy
The load platform looks nicely sized but the four leg mounts, as shown in
the pictures, would allow the same potentially catastrophic failure if the
single bolt through the fork crown failed. And that seems to be just the
sort of failure some folks have been worried about.
It's just a thought, but I wonder if the rearmost pair of the four legs
might be able to extend horizontally rearward and pick up the
top-of-the-fork-crown mounting bolts that many Rivendell bikes have. The
forward pair of legs could continue to attach to the forks with P-clams or
via the braze-ons that many forks provide. If so, that would give a
significantly higher degree of security than the mounting system shown in
the images. The second image, in particular, shows how everything currently
would pivot forward on to the front tire if the single fork crown
through-bolt failed.
Maybe I should buy one of these and give the alternative four-legged mount
a try. $150 doesn't seem unreasonable.
