[RBW] Re: New Sturmey S3X hub arrived yesterday!
I will do my best to break this hub. The most interesting thing so far, now that it's out of the plastic, is that you can slide a cassette cog onto the splines, and then thread a fixed-gear cog on after. No lockring, but I'm on record as eschewing them, anyway. I just got a pair of $15 rims and $16 spoke set from IRO which allowed me to swing the $120 hub. I may paint the hub black before I build it, in order to make it completely unsellable... :^) It also has a thumbshifter, not a bar-end shifter, but I intend to mount the shifter-part to the seatstay, anyway. Philip: Usually I stick strictly to silver, but in this case I personally dig the red... I'm glad you got your project going; that encourages me to get MY butt in gear to lace up my SA 2-speed... I just need to measure and order the dang spokes. 3 speed fixie... SICK! On Mar 18, 11:04 pm, Philip Williamson philip.william...@gmail.com wrote: Xmas year 'round - agh! Brain Nail! The top gear is 1:1, so a 40:15 gives you (me, w ~40mm tires) 46, 55, 73 gears. Of course, Sheldon Brown's gear calculator includes an internal hub setting for the S3X. I have a pretty good Quickbeam range with a 15t and 17/21 dingle cog on a flip-flop hub and two chainrings, and it's lighter, but this is just cool. I have to do it.
