Re: [RBW] Re: PSA - 1999 Riv All Rounder
Matt: Sorry to hear about the damage and hassle and loss. George: A *reputable* insurance company won't jerk you around about reimbursement, as long as you give good *prima facie *evidence that you are not trying to jerk *them* around. Long ago I had a mid level mountain bike and a nice tool collection stolen from a locked shed, and I had no receipts at all -- much of the stuff was bought second hand. But I was able to list almost every single item by maker, type, and rough retail value, and I got reimbursed full replacement minus the deductible (allowed me to buy a nice 7-speed *tout Sante *Falcon). A second claim, 8 years later, after I was gently hit by a car, also resulted in full reimbursement for property, loss of use, loss of income, and pain and suffering. Once again, if you can substantiate value, even anecdotally, you get satisfaction. Note that, if you don't have "replacement value" specified for your homeowner's or renter's policy, you should change it so that it does specify this reimbursement. With actual cash value reimbursement you are at the mercy of the adjusters. Patrick Moore, who used to sell insurance. [RBW] Re: PSA - 1999 Riv All Rounder
This is indeed a sad story, especially given the demise of a much sought after Rivendell vintage bike. And it got me thinking about how we should be considering the value of some of our bikes. I see pricing on this blog that is often in the $500 - $1000 range at the low end (and sometimes just for a frame) to well over $1000, model, age, and component dependent. But if something drastic happens to these bikes (destroyed, stolen, etc.) will our insurance company compensate us accordingly? I still have all of the original receipts for my Ram frame and parts totaling well over $2K, but somehow I don't think I'd see anywhere near that kind of money from an adjuster for a bike going on 15+ years old. Has anyone looked into a way to insure their bikes as something much more valuable than just an "appliance" or (gag) a "toy" in the eyes of their insurer? And, if so, would they charge some ridiculous rates for it? Just wondering. Well, the frame arrived a few days ago and it looks like a forklift crashed through the side of the box. The rear dropout is damaged and the frame appears slightly tweaked. An estimate I received is $575, plus shipping, to fix it. There is also a local framebuilders that can fix it for relatively cheap, but he offers powder coat instead of paint and I would like to keep the decals. It is all repairable and I figured insurance could cover that, but I suspect Pros Closet does not insure the shipments. They said I would get an insurance estimate within 24 hours, but I am still waiting. When I was on the phone with their support, they mentioned I should only expect about $200-300, well less than the cost of a paint job needed to cover paint loss from the repair. They also blamed Fedex as offering very little, but $600 is a better pill to swallow than $1700. It does not make sense, unless PC did not insure it properly. In all, I’ve been a bit disappointed in this. It seems likely that I will be returning the bike for a refund. :( I might have a shot at the other one outed, but the seller wants to look into some issues he found.
