[RBW] Re: Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-21 Thread hsmitham
Patrick,

Nice slant on an old topic. And I like the Zen aspect.

I get what Garth is saying, and well the truth is the truth if your willing to
accept it. We all have our own time frame. And all these material things are
transitory, we can't take them with us where we're going. Another way to
perceive it is that we are care taking them for the next caretaker. Ownership
is an illusion.

Regarding the thread, I have 4 bikes. 1. A. Homer 2. Atlantis 3. 1984 Trek 660
4. 1995 Salsa Ale Carte MTB. The 660 will be built this Summer and the Salsa
needs some work new cockpit. Thinking about those Jones bars. And the Jones
bikes are so tempting. Mike thanks for the feedback very helpful.

If I had one bike and only one bike then it would be the Hilsen it can and does
handle most everything I throw at it! Road dirt with aplomb. This of course is
based on the current type of riding I do. Like others I rationalized the need
to have multiple bikes and so I built the Atlantis. It's nice to have different
bikes dedicated to different purposes. But as I get older and contemplate
retirement I'm sure I'll thin the herd. The latest temptation would be a fat
tire bike. I keep rolling the notion around my head whether I'd really use it
enough? And then I tell myself that's why I purchased the Atlantis. Ah first
the world dilemma!

As my Father always says make do with what you have

Berkeley is too hot for nice bikes so the Kogswell is used primarily as an
around-town errand bike, as it is fitted with the most complete lock

spend 2-3 overnights every week and rides it while I am there. Both the
Sequoia and the P/R gets touring duties. I have split my brevet on the
Ebisu, Sequoia, and the rSogn the last several year. All these bikes share
several traits--650b wheels, wide tires, low-trail front end, thin-ish
tubings, and front racks and bags. There is certainly overlap, but the way
they are set up end up defining their respective uses.

It has been a really busy 3-4 years and it will stay busy for another 1-2
at least, so now I just want to go out and ride any of them.

Apparently Jeff Jones is claiming his 29ers will fit 650b's. I need to
revisit his site to see if it was 27+ which would be my preference. May
just have a custom built by a frame builder in Portland or just go with a
Pug Op's or Mukluk 3. Yeah I'll be going fatter in the future.

possible mountain bike type riding. Now I ride 62cm bikes. Its time for
someone else to enjoy this bike, and for me to have more garage space. I am

I have 3 bikes in riding mode at the moment (and a few projects hanging in
the garage). The riders... 3D trail bike with a bunch of XTR/RaceFace/Chris
King hanging off of it. I took the knobbies off, it's running slicks. I use
it for hauling a BOB Yak trailer around. A 1970's Motobecane SuperMirage
Mixte. This was my do-all bike for several years. I like mixtes a lot. I
got an Atlantis in February... the Atlantis became my everything bike
immediately, such is its goodness. I've ordered pitlocks for the wheels and
seat, and a compact Abus U lock so I can leave it around town without
getting anxious. I am finding it hard to ride the other bikes. And I have
to smile when I read Grant's latest post about how the Sam and Cheviot are
his go-to Rivs. Maybe they are... but I think the Atlantis is a special
class of its own. It's that good.

If I had to do N+1, my temptation would be: Legolas, which I view as a
Rodeo with canti-posts and slightly wider fork and stay clearances. Having
riden lots-o-bikes with v-brakes and side-pulls, the Tektro 720's I
recently put on the Atlantis was a serendipitous revelation in component
satisfaction. So the Legolas gets the nod over Roadeo... if I had N+1
moolah to deposit with Walnut Creek.

These days, the Sweetpea gets 98% of the love, the Riv 1.9%, and the Lemond
.01%.
The Riv gets more riding days, but not anywhere near the distance as the
Sweetpea.

I just can't work myself up to a serious need another bicycle want. Keeping
three bikes maintained is work (I keep a notebook, to remember which bike had
what done to it when). Storing three bikes (plus the husband's three, none of
which are ridden) is a challenge. I keep a spare tube, levers, a multitool and
a patch kit on each bike, and swapped a pump around. Finally bought Sweetpea
its own pump, so the two most-ridden bikes are generally ready to go with one
less thing to remember.

If there was going to be a next bike, it would be another custom, and at least
a 2 year wait. Fun to fantasize about, but... And, as a friend put it: you
only have one butt!

In general, I've got enough things. Don't need any more things.

[RBW] Re: Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-17 Thread Surlyprof
Nice topic, Patrick. Very zen mindfulness. Simplicity and not wanting for
N+1 is nice. I've been living the Hillborne life that Riv has been
recently pushing on the Blug (
http://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/115426377099/sam). I swap between 36h Mavic
A719's during the week and 32h Synergies on the weekends (and probably
often through the summer). I've got a SOMA Groove that is a great bike but
I usually only touch to move it to another side of my shop now. I've
loved my trips to Walnut Creek to test ride the Roadeo, Hunq, 650b
Bombadil, 650b Clem and think the H. Homer Hilson may be one of the most
beautiful bikes I've ever laid eyes on (fun to test ride, too). I may lust
for other bikes (almost all Rivs) but I don't feel the *need* for others.
Still thrilled and giddy with the daily experience of riding the Sam for
whatever I'm doing. The only time I feel like I am missing out on
something is on the rare day that I don't get to ride at all.

I guess if I were to N+1, it would probably be a Brompton for traveling and
trips to the city. A recent vacation had me really missing riding for a
week and a half. Plus, how cool would it be to tour a museum with your
bike parked in the coat check rather than worrying about a Rivendell locked
to a parking meter in downtown SF?!

Since sometime this winter I’ve wanted a go-fast geared country bike. But
we (wisely) put our money toward gearing up for family biking. The
challenge has been could I do longer rides on the Quickbeam? So far, I’ve
done as long as 94 miles, 2/3rds of it dirt, and returned still feeling I
could have pushed and done 120 miles (but pushing to that degree isn’t wise
given the brain injury and my extra safety net I like to keep). Pushing to
ride the QB this way has led me to discover things about riding and about
my own strength and endurance I may not have discovered on a geared bike.
That is wonderful gift of simplicity, finding more in less.

So I am content, for now, with N. There is joy and peace in that,
especially considering I know it makes getting bikes for my wife and
lassies possible. Of course, that is also what I said when N was just the
 Hunqapillar. Grin.

 With abandon,
 Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-17 Thread Tim Gavin
Back to the subject of the thread:

My current N is five bikes,
1) Riv Road Standard, set up as a 650b tourer, gravel capable
2) Schwinn KOM, set up as a drop bar 26er gravel/anyroad bike, tour capable
3) Giordana, gofast!, 700x26 max
4) Fatboy, off road and winter bike
5) Cannondale 26 hardtail, off road bike.

But I could probably whittle that down to three (Riv, KOM, and Fatboy)

- I haven't ridden the Cannondale since I got the fat bike (it's that much
fun), so I'll probably sell it soon.

- I rode my Giordana about 3 times last year, and although I love its
whippy steel ride, it's too limited for the type of riding I prefer. I may
never sell it, but I'll never ride it regularly. I've ridden it 3 or 4
times already this year, because I felt guilty to leave such a gorgeous
Italian unloved.

- I have a lot of overlap between my Riv and KOM (especially since they
both have Nitto B135 bars, triple cranks, bar-ends and 9 speed cassettes).
But, they both are good commuters and excel at my favorite riding: gravel
and trail. The Riv is smooth and composed, where the KOM is more playful.

I could have one bike for this mission, but I love being able to choose
between two excellent steeds. This realization helps me understand why
someone would have multiple, similar bikes, if that type works for their
favorite type of riding.

Tim

[RBW] Re: Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-17 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I have some really beautiful, special bikes, but like Lynne, I mostly just
ride one or two of them. Leaning toward Quickbeams and my Salsa right now.
The one languishing the most is my beautiful Riv Joe Stark road. Just a
great go-fast bike, but I'm not a go-fast person. So it's just collecting
dust, probably under 100 miles a year. But can't bring myself to sell it as
it's such a great bike! But not exactly N-1, as there are plenty of other
bikes I would like to replace it with! (mostly mountain bike types).
