I'm joining this discussion a little late, but my wife and I have a Bike Friday
Family Tandem with the SRAM DualDrive. I will agree that it doesn't ride quite
the same (as well?) as a "regular" bike, but we do have a lot fun on it.
Obviously, being able to pack a tandem into the trunk of a small car is a big
perk, and it only takes about 15 minutes or so once you get the hang of it.

On another note, I love the DualDrive setup... Wish it was more popular and
available!

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-21 Thread Steven Seelig
Compared to a $600 Bike Friday tandem, my suggestion will be in the
stratospheric realm. For my young son and me, we invested in a Co-Motion
tandem, the Torpedo model where the stoker seat can be raised from 4 foot
something rider up to 6 feet. We also got S&S couplers so we can fit into
two suitcases for travel. It is super fantastic, and rides really as smooth
as butter - Riv-like if you would.

The thing about a tandem with couplers is that only one wheel needs to fit
in each suitcase, making the loading process a heckuva lot easier than
loading a single, where the two wheel stuff gets pretty tight. I would say
that the breakdown and assembly are about the same hour as with the Bike
Friday. Where it is not as good is being able to stuff the tandem into the
trunk of a car, so if you have a sedan, the Bike Friday would work. But if
like most 'Mericans you have an SUV or a station wagon like me, just detach
the front section and the bike fits nicely. BTW: it breaks into 3 section.

Price is an issue, of course, with a new bike being in the 5 grand range.
I am told (by the dealer!?) that coupled tandems do hold their value, to
which I can attest only to their rarity. I just couldn't find another like
this in the used market.

Aside from the fact that my stoker son is 9, and getting him to pedal
steadily is a chore, the bike is a pleasure. Let's see how many more years
I get from it until he is ready to ride 50 mile days on his own bike.

Kelly,
Long time no talk. Feel free to call if you want more details.
I had a 66cm Bike Friday briefly and was surprised at the ride for riders our
size. I second that the tire size (width) makes a difference when trying to
calm the steering a bit. Mine accelerated brilliantly and would have been a
good fit for your intended purpose.
Although I adapted well to the ride and don’t see that being an issue for you.
My wife did not like the look of me riding it. Her being a non cyclist at the
time; thought I looked like a “bear on a tricycle” (6’6” 240lbs) and questioned
why I was not riding my “normal” bikes (74cm Bombadil or 68cm Quickbeam. Not
that others opinions would significantly affect you nor I. Nothing better than
tightening up a Tilly for protection and riding off.

Now regarding the Bike Friday Tandem I would not pull the trigger without
riding one first although they do hold used value and you could flip/resell
easily. Most who rave about them to my knowledge are not our size and ride
them frequently with children and/or as introduction to Tandems.
I know you have evolved away from Rivendell but you might want to try their
tandem. My wife wants to ride ours weekly and it is 100% better (more
enjoyable) than the Jumbo Cannondales we each owned in the past.
I consider mine custom-like and it is so dialed in we will never part with it.
Grant’s willingness to add a size for us outliers is something I will be
forever grateful for and what makes him and RBW special.

As to the handing of small wheeled folding bikes, I find that tire width
make a huge difference.

I have Schwalbe Big Apple 20 x 2.15 tires on both my Bike Friday Llama and
Swift Folder. No problems at all doing a week long tour or a century on
the Llama.

Both bikes came with more narrow tires, and the handling suffered. As far
as I can tell, the wider tires stabllize the steering,

I also have a brompton with the large touring bag that I use for my
commute. I was able to set it up almost identically to my Hillborne. It
can be a little twitchy but you learn that smooth steering is all in the
lean. I also feel that it's about 20% more work than the Hillborne because
of the 16" wheels. I found Bike Fridays to be better in that respect.

Good Luck.

That is a great deal on the bike Friday tandem in Bismarck, ND. Since he is
selling his parents, I don’t think the seller understands the value.

I had a bike friday takedown tandem that went into travel cases. It rode fine,
but didn’t have the complete feel like a “regular size” bike. The take down
takes about an hour and the learning curve will get it faster over time.

If you have the money, might as well give it a try and enjoy life.

Thanks; very interesting photos. Funny, in the first photo, with the
seatpost all the way down, the tires look as if they're at least
40-somethings.

My Hon Solo has nominal 35s, actual 32s (406 X 1.35 Kojaks) and I've ridden
it once or twice on the acequia roads near my house; but our soil is so
sandy that, if the last rain is more than a couple of weeks gone, the sand
is just too deep to manage. (My ~29 mm Elk Passes, though, 24.75" in
diameter versus the 19" of the Kojaks, do noticeably better, tho' even
these flounder; point being that yes, diameter makes a difference.) I'd
like one day to replace the Kojaks with those Tioga Power Blocks that I've
heard nice things about -- 1.75"/44-45 mm as labeled.

I couldn't get it into an overhead bin, but Lyfte could certainly manage it.

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-17 Thread Matt
I can't say enough glowing things about my Brompton if folding is your
priority (and there are myriad resources out there for touring with them if
that's what you're looking to do; start with pathlesspedaled.com). It's the
bike I ride the most because it's my commuter and my city bike. I thought
when I bought it it'd be a niche thing but it's so comfortable and
versatile, I take it everywhere and can do nearly everything on it. Rides
fire roads just fine too, as long as they aren't too loose. Fits in the
overhead bin of a 777. I'm 6' tall and have the H bars, which are the most
upright option. I'd give one to every college kid instead of a laptop.

Re: [RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
It depends on what you're looking to accomplish.

I spent thousands of dollars on a custom Bike Friday NWT, dreaming of
having a bike with me whenever I traveled.

After three trips I sold it at a significant loss.

A Friday is almost as much trouble to pack and carry around boxed as a
traditional bike in a Trico case. But when you get where you're going it
won't ride as well as the traditional bike.

I knew that, but bought one anyway because I thought the trailer suitcase
would be magic, allowing me to do easy point-to-point tours, flying in to
one airport and out another. In practice, the trailer was an utter dog to
pull, robbing almost all the joy from my riding. It was fragile as well,
breaking in a couple different ways in not-terribly intense use. It also
doubled the number of flat tires I got. I stopped using the trailer, and
without the trailer there's not much point to a Friday, at least for me.

They do save money on airline fees, though. The only reason I would go back
to a Friday is if I were flying with a bike several times a month on my own
dime.

Best,
Reed

I've considered their bikes before, but once I realized just how long/high
of a "stem" I'd need to get a similar position to my 60cm Bombadil , I
cannot imagine how it feel very solid and stable compared to a regular
frame.
