[RBW] Re: Salinas to Templeton (near Paso Robles)

Christine:

+1 for the coast over the inland route, but between the Monterey
Hostel and M-6 in San Simeon there are no inexpensive lodgings, and
about 120 miles of riding.

I came north on the inland route a couple of years ago. Routes
paralleling 101 are easy but there is one stretch around a military
facility where you're on the freeway. Not for long but it's noisy.
We went from Paso Robles to King City in a day that was short but had
PM headwinds. In your direction those will be tailwinds so you can
get from M-6 in King City to M-6 in Paso in a day, even planning
moderate mileages.

I've done this route before (actually San Jose to Santa Barbara). Just get a
AAA map and ride the roads that parallel 101. They are great. I like this
valley a lot (home of East of Eden). King City has a bunch of in-expensive
motels and lots of good Mexican resturants. Good luck and have fun!

[RBW] Re: Salinas to Templeton (near Paso Robles)//Coastal question

2010-04-28 Thread CR Masterson
That was the original idea...seems I would have to eat in restaurants,
stay in really pricey places. Did not want to spend $400 for three
days. (I am going slowly; 20-30-40 miles a day for a couple of
reasons.) So...if you have secrets taht make the coast less expensive,
I am listening! / Thanks. Christine

If I were doing that route, I'd go via Big Sur; AFAIK, the hot, dry
inland route doesn't have much to recommend it, whereas that section
of the coast is one of the most spectacular bike routes in the world.
