[RBW] Re: Scwalbe Big Apple/Marathon XR 50mm's
Thanks for the replies. Jim I could use some clarification. The XR's lowest pressure rating is different from the Schwalbe North America and the Schwalbe Global sites. What is the lowest pressure for the 700x50's? The North America site says 45-70, the Global says 30-70 , which would be the same as the Big Apples. Can they both be run at 30 psi? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Scwalbe Big Apple/Marathon XR 50mm's
I'd go by what's printed on the tire. I always rode mine at approx 40-55 psi on Velocity Dyad rims, and I'm pretty sure I experimented as low as 20-30 psi with no obvious problems. I think 70 is too much for my tastes, rides rough, etc. I'd also shy away from going down to 30 on narrower rims. But, please don't listen to me. Get the tires and experiment to figure out what works for you. Jim On May 15, 10:31 am, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for the replies. Jim I could use some clarification. Peter White in a thread on his forum recently opined Schwalbe's higher recommended psi is too high by 10. He did not say anything about underinflation that I am aware of. Like you, I would be concerned about going as low as 30 on a smaller rim. On May 15, 12:00 pm, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery thill@gmail.com wrote: I'd go by what's printed on the tire. [RBW] Re: Scwalbe Big Apple/Marathon XR 50mm's
I've used both tires albeit on differently sized rims (XR 26x50 Big Apple 700x60) The Big Apple works well at a variety of pressures, though at the high end, you lose the benefits of fat tire suspension. I really like the XR's for snow riding and dirt roads. I use these on my Surly Big Dummy and they are great for toting the 100+ pound loads I sometimes carry in town. I run these on wide Salsa Gordo rims. I recently discovered how low is too low in terms of tire pressure for these tires. I was running about 20 psi or so in the front and I discovered that on sharp turns at speed the tire would suddenly collapse onto the sidewall. It was a little alarming when it happened on a fast downhill. I now completely understand the RBW bias towards round tires! At 40 psi and above, they work great. In my opinion, XR's are complete overkill for anything except nasty roads, no roads and very heavy loads. I used them road touring one year and my Atlantis felt like a truck. However . . . Marathon Supremes in 50mm are great. They are lighter than Big Apples and roll really well. I've been running these on my Bombadil on road rides up to 54miles and will use them on an upcoming 3000 mile tour. They are very nice. They do not have a bottle generator strip and the tread is too smooth for rugged off road stuff. Otherwise they are about as close to an armored racing tire as one can find. I really like them. I can see how the gear inches change by the gear charts for different size tires, but what affect does the extra width and heft have, if any, in real world riding? A 2 tooth reduction seems to be where I'm going from my road bike using a 13-32 7 speed freewheel. A 32 mm 559 tire on a 22 mm rim measures just shy of 25. The 60 mm 559 Big Apple measured just shy of 27. Perhaps you can extrapolate. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. This does cause sidewall flop that you notice on pavement (not on dirt), but I've never had a pinch flat. 170 lb bare nekkid. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
