[RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
The last two people I knew who were into triathlons were runners/swimmers who accepted a bicycle as a necessary evil to participate. They trained mostly in the gym on stationary equipment. They exemplify why the distance from other riders rule in triathlons is less about drafting and more about the safety of runners/swimmers racing each other on bikes in handling compromised positions. Neither of those folks could suffer actual conversations about bikes, just wanted to know the model and associated wins earned by them when raced by notables. They were more interested in conversations about how and when to pee themselves in a race than of practical observations regarding cycling equipment, (rust resistance aside). No Brooks for you! [RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
I like Will's suggestion. He'll walk away from that discussion either understanding what he REALLY needs in a bike (particularly regarding fit, handlebars height to saddle, etc) or realize that he is asking the wrong person for his triathelete aspirations. Dave Scott Centurions were great bikes in the '80's and highly coveted around campus these days. I remember really wanting one back in the late '80's. Pretty cool to see them still in great shape with either the purple and yellow or turquoise and salmon paint jobs. Throw on some leg warmers and you're ready to zip off to aerobics class! You know what I ride and you know it is dramatically different from a tri-bike, so why are you asking me? Are you asking me because you really want a practical bike that you can ride in triathlons, that will look vastly different on your 10 race days a year and be 99% as fast as riding a tri-bike, while also being fun to ride on race day and every other day, that allows you to train by exploring dirt roads and paths you didn't know existed until they beckoned to your front wheel as you approached, that you would have missed on your tri-bike even if you had seen it because you were focused on the road ten feet in front of you because your handlebars were ten inches below your seat and your neck didn't bend any further forward and even if you had inexplicably glimpsed this gravel wonder out of the corner of your eye would would have had to deny your inner exuberant, adventuresome kid because your tires are the width of your thumb and inflated to the point they are pneumatic in name only? Because if that is why you are asking me, I'm your guy! Otherwise, what ARE you thinking? That’s the answer if he’s a good friend AND a triathlete. Otherwise the answer is probably, Check with your LBS – they’ll fix you up. [RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
Amit, I was in a similar situation last year. A friend wanted to buy a new bike; his budget was about half of your friend's. He met me for a ride on two occasions. He had an old mountain bike with the bars below the seat. As we rode, he commented on my more upright riding position and how comfortable it looked. He asked many good questions. I even offered to go with him to look at bikes. I gave him a Riv mailer, too. He ended up buying a new bike. Bars are still low and it has narrow tires 700x28. He now wants guidance on fatter tires and higher bars. In hindsight, I would have taken him riding on some mixed terrain (gravel and dirt). In the end, I was reminded that some of us learn by experiences, me included. All the best, On Friday, May 1, 2015 at 5:25:32 PM UTC-4, Amit Singh wrote: He has a budget of $3,000 and wants to buy a tri-bike and wants your advice on what to get. [RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
I would ask the following What kind of Triathlons do you do (Sprint, Ironman?) What kind of bike do you have currently or did you have previously? what is good or bad about that bike for you? Will you ride it for anything but Triathlons? Have you ever ridden a bike in that position (i.e super aero) for any length of time. Depending on the specifics of the use I would keep in mind that a tri specific bike is really good at triathlons and not much else where as a road bike can be adapted to triathlons (bars, seat, wheels etc) but can also do road rides and commuting. Good luck On Friday, May 1, 2015 at 2:25:32 PM UTC-7, Amit Singh wrote: He has a budget of $3,000 and wants to buy a tri-bike and wants your advice on what to get. Re: [RBW] Re: So your friend calls and says he wants to buy a bike
Yes, my answer would be different if they have no plans to enter triathlons and this answer presumes at a minimum they want to get into triathlons. But it is the answer I would give to an acquaintance as well as a friend. I'm pretty stupid that way. It either leads to people running away or becoming good friends. Grin.
