[RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos or Sam Hillborne with Surly LHT parts

Agreed on the Compass Extralights. I keep wondering if I should have
bought the 32mm Stampede Pass instead of the 38mm Barlow Pass for a
lighter, faster ride... until I ride them. So smooth and fast and the
extra air provides some extra confidence against flats. So far, so good.

+1 for the tires. Assuming you're starting with a 700C LHT, either the
Compass 38mm or 32mm tires will transform the ride. Don't be afraid of the
Extralight version.

I notice that the San Marcos is no longer on the Riv website. I wonder if
this is intentional or just a web glitch? Still available from Soma, of
course.

If the LHT's wheelset and parts doesn't get you to the club ride feel you
are looking for, have you thought of building up a lightweight San Marcos
and just keeping the LHT beefy for your touring desires? N+1 is always
nice if you have the space!

Myself, I'd prefer one bike to be really great at my favorite kind of
riding . Another bike for another, if there is an "other" favorite.

2015-05-20 Thread Evan Baird
Depending on what size you need the SM is really 2 different bikes. The 650b
(47-57cm) is more of a nimble sport touring bike, while the 700c version is
quite a bit beefier and made to take more weight. Basically a Sam with shorter
reach brakes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos or Sam Hillborne with Surly LHT parts

2015-05-20 Thread Tim Gavin
If you're a smaller person, the San Marcos can be a decent tourer. If
you're above 160 lbs or so, then I wouldn't recommend it for substantial
loads.

My girlfriend uses hers (51 cm 650b San Marcos 1st gen) as a tourer with
front and rear racks. The front rack (Campee Classic 20F) needed clamps to
fit; I used Tubus fork and stay clamps. It's very secure, and since the
lowrider frames keep the weight so low, it's also very stable.

If you're looking for a more lively bike, the San Marcos would definitely
fit the bill. You could re-use the LHT's wheels if they're the same
diameter (559, 622 LHT vs 584, 622 SM), but I'd keep an eye out for a
lighter pair of wheels. You could definitely re-use the bars and
drivetrain from the LHT.

The Sam Hillborne is stouter than the San Marcos, but probably not quite as
stout as the LHT. The Sam is a great "one ring to rule them all" bike, but
of course Tollkein's Sam Gamgee would rather garden than rule.

Regarding supple tires: put them on every bike, if you can handle the
occasional flat. The ride is supreme with lightweight tires. I have bad
luck with flats in town, so I just fit my Riv with Pari-Motos set up
tubeless on PL23 rims. These wheels are crazy fast, and mostly puncture
proof.

[RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos or Sam Hillborne with Surly LHT parts

2015-05-19 Thread Bruce Smitham
I've owned all three (2 Sams and 2 LHT's) I wouldn't recommend the Soma San
Marcos for any kind of touring. I tried it and it won't take any type of
weight. The Sam Hillborne can take more weight (though not as much as the
LHT) but it's more versatile and really fun to ride in different
combinations. Lot's of fun.

Good luck, Bruce in San Diego

Agreed. Try a lighter wheelset with lighter tires before springing for a
new frame. The LHT is a tank, but you'll gain more first by thinning down
the components. After that you can go for a lighter frame for additional
gains.

I don't have much experience with the Sam, but my San Marcos is a much
nicer ride than my LHT. You may want to try different tires before you buy
another frame.

BTW, your LHT brakes won't fit on the San Marcos or the newer Sams.
